First, A Quick Introduction
If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Lora, a lover of vintage junk:) I’ve spent my life scrounging and finding old things. I love to revive and repurpose my finds and show others how to use them in their decor. For many years I sold vintage and handcrafted items and owned my own shop with a friend. These days my hubs, Mr. Fix-it, is much happier that I am sharing my crazy ideas online. He much prefers keeping my designs he engineers for our home, rather than selling them.
If you enjoy your visit, definitely become an Insider, to keep the ideas coming!
Decorating with Christmas Collections in the Living Room
Get ready for LOTS of pictures! I’ll try not to chat much, because I know it’s more fun to look at pretty pictures;)
Our living room decor started with the inspiration to turn a curbside find into salvaged door trees. I have a whole collection of old doors, so probably good to use them for something! (I’ll be sharing the DIY on these next week, fyi). I love how they turned out and designed the Christmas mantel around them. Of course I had to add some vintage junky bling to each one; I love old hardware.
I also scored these tree shutters and a lot of the other vintage finds you see in my Christmas decor at a recent estate sale. See all the fun I had in Thrifting for Vintage Decor. Santa was good to me this year; I don’t need any more presents;)
Vintage Shiny Brite Ornament Collection for Old Fashioned Style
My vintage Shiny Brite ornament collection travels to different areas of the house each year. This year they’re filling our main tree…and a few others. I was supposed to be buying my first artificial tree this year, but my order got cancelled, so the real tree tradition continues in the living room. I picked out a sparse one that really shows off the decorations (and Mr. Fix-it liked the price;)
I hung the bells on the mantel, the larger orbs on the main tree, and the smaller, prettier ones on the small trees by the fireplace. Ornaments that have lost their hangers get placed on fiberfill and placed in fun containers. Battery powered candles or twinkly lights show off their pretty sparkle. The mini balls filled my vintage sorter, along with mini trees and some treasured old corsages from an aunt.
Vintage Suitcases and Christmas Tree Stands
I love decorating with vintage collections all through the year, but especially at Christmas. My tower of vintage suitcases gets re-styled each season. It’s a great space-saving way to enjoy a large-sized collection. It’s almost to the ceiling!
My collection of Christmas tree stands has just kind of happened. It’s fun to come across different ones I haven’t seen before. Every year they’re displayed differently. This year they’re proudly featured on the coffee table.
Traditional Style Decor in the Dining Room
The reason I went to the estate sale a couple weeks ago was in pursuit of red and white transferware. I was craving to fill our new-to-us hutch with it’s classic style for Christmas (see how I gave this ho-hum hutch a vintage makeover in DIY Hutch Makeover Tips).
I succeeded…in a big way! And had way too much fun decorating. Yes, the soup tureen is drool-worthy with it’s details. I happily came home with enough red and white transferware to make a lovely Christmas display!
Thrifted Dishes for a Christmas Table Setting
An early season thrift drop off turned into a major Christmas decor haul! Some pretty dishes, vintage linens and a cute child’s horsey were just what the dining room needed for the holiday. I added my red and green glassware and a few antique oil lamps to continue the traditional style.
Thanks to my Instagram friends (follow me HERE), I learned this old horse is a Mobo, a treasured toy from the mid-century. By pushing on the foot pedals, the horse can be ridden. I’ll have to get my niece to try it out!
DIY Repurposed Projects for Christmas
The piano gets into the holiday spirit, too, even though it only gets played when Happy Girl comes home for a visit. Several of my DIY repurposed projects landed here:
Violin Instrument Case Repurpose
DIY Repurposed Candlesticks with Sheet Metal Shades
Lastly, let’s visit the kitchen to finish out this holiday home tour. (Our chandelier is a curbside find that Mr. Fix-it re-wired. I love it’s pretty details;)
Vintage Traditional Christmas Decor in the Kitchen
This year’s kitchen decor was inspired by my set of Johnson Brothers’ Friendly Village dishes. Happy Girl and I spent Thanksgiving weekend drying citrus slices for the first time and I had so much fun making garland out of them! My estate sale stained glass square and the dried citrus look so pretty with the sun shining through.
My favorite book to decorate with (find a vintage one HERE) has been turned to a December page, featuring winter birds. We love watching the birds in the winter, so I rearranged our cozy kitchen sitting area to face our deck display. (Get the full winter decorated porch tour in A Christmas Porch with Vintage Junk Style).
Vintage Junk Collections as Decor
The orange slices got my brain thinking about my old wheel collection (do you see the similarity?) Old strollers, grocery carts and doll buggy’s have the best wheels and I’ve been collecting them for awhile. I lined them up in my chicken feeder, hung them on the tree and turned them into a junky centerpiece.
Junky wheels, birds and nests, feathers and yarny snowballs fill the kitchen tree with rustic charm. A handmade log cabin quilt made by my grandma works well as a cozy tree skirt. Afghans are at the ready in a big basket. Even the built-in cupboard got dressed in Christmas classics.
(yes, I am slightly obsessed with these battery-operated birch look taper candles. I have them in every window for Christmas. You can find them HERE)
The glass cupboards feature my vintage scale collection, old rolling pins and other vintage kitchen accessories, all dressed up for Christmas. I love having battery-operated lights on in these cupboards as I make supper on dark winter evenings. Cozy kitchens are the best!

This last pic is our back entry, which is our main entry. I was so excited to use these estate sale tree shutters back here! This is one of my 5 old runner sleds. I love to use them as decor inside and out. Check out one of my most popular posts, 10 Ways to Decorate a Vintage Sled for creative decorating ideas!

Lora,
So many great creative ideas in your home. I loved the book trees and the wooden trees. Such a creative tour. Great job.
Your decor is perfect as always. I especially like the citrus banner over the kitchen sink. Wow 🙂
Your entire home decor is beautiful but those “old door” rustic trees are the best I’ve seen!!!
