About this time of year we all get a bit restless with our home decor. Everything just looks a little blah. You could launch into a big redecorating project if that’s what’s needed. Rearrange Your Furniture
You can use graph paper and templates (like THIS and/or THIS), and try out different layouts on paper. Or you can get some furniture sliders (HERE) and start pushing pieces around. (It’s amazing how much less muscle work is needed with these handy things)
Try some furniture pieces at an angle, arrange them around a different focal point, put your sofa where your chairs were, or switch your loveseat and sofa. I even switched up the furniture in whole rooms, turning my dining room into my living room. I must have really needed a change that year! The point is…just do something different. It will give you a new perspective, and be a fun change.

Swap Up Your Lamps
If you’ve got pairs of lamps (which I totally recommend), swap them with lamps in a different room. I have a pair of green glass lamps in my living room and a pair of clear crystal lamps in our bedroom. I regularly swap them to get different looks in different seasons.
You could also switch up lampshades to get a different seasonal look. Try a different color or have fun with a patterned shade. A more matte shade will look cozier while a more see through shade will be lighter and brighter. It can change the ambiance of your room very quickly.

Rotate Coffee and Side Tables
Do you have a coffee table in your living room and your family room, or maybe in a sitting room? How about switching them? You can do the same with your side tables. Think about all the furniture pieces in your whole house and look at them with new possibility. It’s so easy to get in the rut of looking at the same pieces in the same room. Try your tables in a different room, in a new spot!

Hang Fresh Window Treatments
Clip Rings (get them HERE) make switching up your window treatments so simple. Ready-made panels in all patterns and colors are a great way to get a whole new look to your room (or find vintage ones at the thrift store). Do the math and aim for the fabric to be twice the width of the window, so they’re full enough. If they’re too long, don’t be afraid to hem them up, or let them puddle for a romantic look.

Get a New Area Rug
If your wall to wall carpet is looking a little tired, why not cover it up with a fresh, new area rug? Much more inexpensive than recarpeting. You can try a fun pattern, introduce new accent colors and vary the look of the whole room. Area Rugs are a great way to anchor a room’s furniture and pull a whole room together.
Feature Seasonal Pillows and Throw Blankets
Switching up your pillow covers with seasonal colors and images is an easy way to jump into a new season. You can easily make DIY versions out of thrifted pieces and create your own custom look. Throw blankets can be found secondhand at thrift stores inexpensively and can give your room a seasonal switch in a snap!

Shop Secondhand
It’s so easy to find furniture pieces secondhand. From local swap and shop sites, to Facebook marketplace, to online auctions and thrift stores; People are always getting rid of furniture and accessories. A “new to you” piece can be just the shot in the arm your room needs. Bringing in a new piece or a couple can make your room feel new again!
Unleash the Power of Paint
Paint is fairly inexpensive and has the power to change a whole room! Whether you paint an accent wall, a whole room, or even a piece of furniture. In a couple hours or a couple of days that new color will freshen up your home beautifully. Be warned…once you get started, you may be eyeing other areas in your home.

Add Plants
Live or faux plants can give a room a boost of life. Why not try a new form you’ve never had before? A hanging plant with macrame can be fun; all you need is a hook in the ceiling. Or how about a floor plant, or a tree form? The type of plant you choose can update your look and be a fun way to try something a little different.

Try Different Wall Art
Hanging vintage architectural pieces as wall art is a fun, flexible way of decorating. Hang something unexpected as art. You can hang it alone or switch up what you hang on it. Add seasonal foliage, a fun garland, or hang art on top of it.

Display a Collection
Decorating with a favorite collection is a fun way to enjoy your finds. Why not create a display and use them in a room where you wouldn’t normally use them? Silver coffee servers can look pretty in the bedroom or bathroom; dishes don’t have to be limited to where you eat. If you have a favorite hobby, create a display of those items in a room where you can enjoy them. Override those “decorating rules” you probably have in your head, and try something new!

Taking down holiday decorations is always sad because the house looks so bare. I am a thrift store shopper so got some great ideas from your post for things to look for to brighten my house here in SD, where our Winters are as long as yours in MN.
Thrifting is a great way to give your home a boost the cheap way! I always send some back to them, too:)
Love this Post! ❤️
Makes me feel much better about my very stagnant living room. Right now, I think new curtains would have the biggest impact. The ones I have now make the whole room such an icky color when light shines through them. So depressing – ugh! New panels can be inexpensive and will go far in lifting my mood!
Yes, that sounds like the perfect refresh for your living room! Light streaming through is wonderful, especially in the winter!
I tried to pin it but it doesn’t seem to work. I love all your ideas and did a few, pillows, throws and rugs. These are great ways to change even more than I have, thanks.
Thanks for trying, Marlene; think I’ll be making some changes with the Pinterest buttons in 2022.
All great ideas Lora and boy do I need to clean my artificial plants! Would love some new window treatments too! Stay warm!
