How to Decorate to Thrift the Look, Winter Cabin Style
decorate your home with rustic cabin style decor. thrift store finds make it easy to achieve cabin home decor Style, inexpensively.
When it’s cold outside, there’s nothing like cozy, natural decor to make you feel comfortable inside. The layering of textures and subtle colors in your surroundings may have you enjoying this time of year more than you’d expect! The other day I shared some “Simple Winter Mantel Decor Ideas” to beautify your home. Today’s “How to Decorate to Thrift the Look, Winter Cabin Style” will extend those ideas to the rest of the room.
Our Thrift the Look team is all decorating around a “Cabin” theme today. We each chose a picture to style from using thrifted finds. There will probably be a little vintage and DIY thrown in for good measure;) I’ll have everyone’s links at the end; can’t wait to see all the great cabin inspiration these talented ladies came up with!
My first thought when looking for a Cabin-inspired picture to style around was to check out White Arrows Home. Kristin has the most amazing cabin, lodge-style home, and she lives in the great north, like me (one state away)! Because they enjoy deep mounds of snow, I knew I could find cabin decor I could relate to. Definitely click over & take a look at her amazing home! Thanks, Kristin for letting me use your pic!
Here’s the pic I chose to style with, from her Winter Home Tour, The Cabin Great Room:
See what I mean? You’ve got to see more of her home; it’s amazing! Cabin theme, through and through!
Here’s what stuck out to me, that I wanted to be able to replicate with thrifted finds:
Luckily, I had the brown (almost) leather couches for my foundation to start. Here’s how I thrifted (and DIY’d) the rest!

To Begin your Winter Cabin Style, Shop Your House
Luckily, my two brown (fake) leather sofas were the perfect foundation for this look. (Kinda why I chose this picture;) Instead of using our regular coffee table, though, I swapped up and brought our kitchen seating area table into the living room {“From Vintage Roof Rack to Cool Coffee Table”}.
The rustic wood on this repurposed table looked similar to the coffee table in the inspiration pic. It’s a little tight for this room, but definitely looks great for achieving the rustic cabin style.
Next, I “shopped” Mr. Freckles’ room {“Woodsy Bedroom Makeover Reveal”} for the animal fur and the deer shed. These might have been hard to find at the thrift store, glad I already had them in my house! The evergreen wreath and pinecones were leftover from the Christmas decor. They can definitely be enjoyed a little while longer till spring!
Make A Thrift Store List to Achieve Your Cabin Style
When I headed to the thrift store, I was looking for these items:
- coffee table books with cabin, outdoorsy themes
- plaid textiles: blankets, clothes, scarves
- old pillows with good inserts
- pinecone candle holders
- pillar candles
This time of the year is great for thrifting! Everyone’s in the less-is-more phase and are clearing out. Good news for those of us who enjoy a good treasure hunt, especially since the outdoor sales aren’t happening for a few more months (in my area). If you need some junk-hunt help, check out my “3 Things to Look for at the Thrift Store” to give you direction!
I had pretty good luck, but couldn’t find any pinecone candle holders. I decided to go with a cute little copper lantern and a classic black pillar holder. All together, the 5 coffee table books cost less than a new, store bought one. Honestly, for $3, these books are cheaper inspiration than current magazines!
DIY for Cabin Style
The first thing that stuck out to me in the inspiration pic were the plaid pillows. I knew I needed some. There was also a deer/stag pillow I wanted to have for the look. Time for a little DIY!
To create a deer pillow, I used a couple stencils from Old Sign Stencils (you can see them HERE). I had used the Reindeer Feed stencil (HERE) to make a fun Rudolph pillow for Christmas {“DIY Feedsack Stenciled Reindeer Pillow”}. I used the laurel crest from the Grain stencil (HERE) around the deer head. The result looked pretty similar to the inspiration pic!
Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary stencils for this project. All opinions about their products are my own. Note: their prices are in Canadian currency; see their conversion link to adjust.
I didn’t have any luck finding plaid blankets in my desired colors at the thrift store. But I did have a thrifted wool plaid blazer my mom had found; the fabric was more desirable to me than the fashion;) A trip to the fabric store got me 1 yard of the black and green plaid flannel just like the inspiration pic. With some simple sewing, I had new cabin-friendly pillows for my sofas!
Add Winter Sports Decor
I usually use my vintage skis and sleds on the porch, but brought a few in for the Winter Cabin look. Set on the brick fireplace mantel, they round out the whole look! A thrift store plaid scarf with a little bit of my favorite aqua, helped add a little of my style. I popped some split logs in a cute magazine rack I picked up while thrifting, too. You know when the clerk asks if you “Found everything you were looking for?” I always bring home more! (I maybe picked up another crocheted afghan for the opposing couch, too;)
Winter Cabin Style Thrifted Room Reveal
Here’s the whole cozy room with it’s cabin-friendly rustic look. Totally different than how I usually decorate this room! The men-folk (who totally outnumber me right now) are loving this space. It’s fun to have a different look!

You are so very creative, I love every element! I LOVE your mantel, those trees are perfectly winter! I’m terribly sad I missed this round, next round.
Thanks, Laurie! I hope you can join us next time, too!
I think my favorite part was your new pillows! Cabin style is not my home style, but I jokingly tell my SO, “Oh, honey, wouldn’t that be great for the summer place (which we don’t have!)” when I see a lake/ocean/woodsy treasure! If I had a second…or third home, I’d been right there! You did an awesome job and I can understand why the guys in your household like it!
Wouldn’t that be fun to have several homes to decorate all in a different decor style, Kathy? But when it came to cleaning multiple places:( We are all enjoying our cozy cabin look for a bit!
Oh wow, Lora, do I LOVE how you styled your fireplace! I never thought to use a small footstool as a riser for decor until seeing yours. I have one collecting dust in the basement and it is so coming upstairs this weekend. Dang, regretting packing away my tabletop Christmas trees too! Love the pillows you made too. Nailed it!
I can’t tell you how honored I am that you chose my cabin as inspiration!! I am in love with what you did and how you thrifted the look! You are so creative and talented! Can’t wait to share this!!
When I heard we were doing a cabin theme, I knew right where I’d go for inspiration! Thanks for letting me use your pic! I know my cabin-loving readers will love your blog!
Cute idea and your decor turned out perfectly. You know I love that mantel! Enjoy
Thanks, Cindy! The whole room feels different with the cozy, cabin look!
I love this look really has some nice color and winter decor, those skis and pillows made the difference.
It’s amazing what a few different accessories can do for a room!
Wow! Lora, you did such a great job with this challenge. There’s definitely a wintery cabin feeling in your space and what a great job on all of your pillows. I really liked your wood storage idea – now that’s a fun way to use a magazine rack and present wood for the fireplace! Beautiful job!!
Yea, that kinda came to me right at the end, Sheila; it gives great rustic texture & I love the magazine rack!
Wow, that turned out so great Lora!
Tania
Thanks! We’re enjoying the cozy look, right as a winter storm is knocking on our door;(
Lora,
You did a great job . You made such a cozy cabin feel and your pillows turned out great, love both.
You’re a talented lady.
Cindy
Thanks for your sweet compliment, Cindy:) I do enjoy making things to beautify our home!
Wow wow wow! You captured this look so well and those pillows really are the stand out element. They make it. Nicely done!
Thanks, Heather! Yes…I knew it was all about the pillows;)
Oh this is wonderful, Lora! Kristin has a lovely home, and you captured the look so well and made it your own! The pillows are so beautiful! I love all of the winter touches you brought in…it’s all perfect! Great job!
Thanks, Linda! It’s a totally different look for us, but we’re really enjoying it!
Really cute. Love that plaid pillow made out of an old jacket. What a great idea.
Yes, that jacket was beautifully made, Karen. It was hard to cut up a Pendleton, but I knew I’d actually be able to enjoy the beautiful fabric so much more! And I still have more of it for future projects!
Your living room looks perfectly cozy for winter. Love the pillows that you made! I need to start looking for decor books while thrifting. I love to look through a book and I’d rather buy a used book than spend $10+ on a magazine.
I know, right? I figured I can send them back to the thrift store when I’m done. I always feel guilty throwing beautiful magazines away/recycling.
