DIY Feedsack Stenciled Reindeer Pillow
Craft this charming stenciled Rudolph Reindeer pillow for Christmas decor with this easy how to.
The Christmas season inspires our creativity, doesn’t it? This year, I’ve had so much fun dusting off my stenciling skills and making some cute new decor for our home with Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencil’s new Christmas line. Ever since I spied the Reindeer Feed stencil, I’ve been envisioning a Rudolph spin on it with a vintage feedsack look. If you love old grainsacks and feedsacks as much as me, I think you’re going to want to make this DIY Feedsack Stenciled Reindeer Pillow for Christmas.
Old Sign Stencils provided me with complimentary stencils for this project. All opinions about their products are my own. Note: their prices are in Canadian currency; see their conversion link to adjust.

Vintage Feedsacks have great graphics and colors. I have a nice collection of them and have been wanting to make some pillows for myself. {“Feedsacks, Flour Sacks, or Grain Sacks? Is there a Difference?”} From the first time I saw this Reindeer Feed stencil from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils (you can find it HERE), I pictured a vintage feedsack-styled pillow with a Rudolph-the-Red-Nosed-Reindeer theme.
But to get that true vintage feedsack style, I knew it needed some checks and some stripes to go with it. Luckily, Old Sign Stencils had them, too!
You can find the Grain Sack Stripe stencil HERE. I used G3 and G4 for this pillow.
You can find the Large Buffalo Check stencil HERE.
Plan Out the Pattern Layout of your Stenciled Pillow First
As I’ve been using them, I’ve been impressed with the thick mylar and durability of these high quality stencils. I’ve used a wide variety of stencils through the years, and these are definitely going to last and be able to be used for many projects. I’ve got more ideas brewing for them;)
In order to get that vintage feedsack-old cotton color and texture, I used a washed cotton dropcloth for this DIY pillow. If you are not a sewer, you could use a pre-made plain pillow cover with the same result. This finished pillow is a 20″ square. (I won’t be showing how to sew a pillow cover here)
Start by laying out your stencils and taping them down with painter’s tape:
Use Fabric Medium with your Craft Paints
Because I’m stenciling on fabric, I added a fabric medium into the paint. This is a seasonal pillow and will mostly be decorative, so I’m not planning on washing it, but just in case, I’ll add it to be safe. (you can find it HERE).
I wanted to mimic the old feedsacks with my color choices and also use the colors I love decorating with at Christmas: rosy red, vintage green, aqua and white. I used metallic craft paints and some glittered versions to add a little holiday sparkle.
Once you have the “Reindeer Feed” words painted on, add the word “Red” to the top left. Simply tape off the R, e, and d from the word. Now Rudolph gets his own special food for his important job of guiding the sleigh!
For the grainsack stripes down the sides, I painted the G3 stripes in turquoise paint and then used the 2 skinny outside stripes of G4 in white and then glittered silver over the top.
Add Buttons for Texture on the Stenciled Pillow
Pillows are always more fun with a little 3D texture. Add white buttons on the snowflakes and find a round button for the reindeer nose. Now Rudolph is coming to life! I also added a couple jingle bells at his neck for fun.
If you used a pre-made pillow cover, you’re done, otherwise you can assemble your pillow cover yourself like I did.
Decorate with your DIY Feedsack Stenciled Reindeer Pillow for Christmas
I think this cute pillow turned out better in real life than it did in my head! I’m in love:)
It fits right in with it’s vintage feedsack pillow neighbors…
