Hutch Decorating Ideas for Spring (with Vintage Garden Style)
How do you decorate a hutch for Spring? these vintage garden style decor ideas will inspire you to decorate your china cabinet for Spring beautifully.
Spring is hopefully getting started where you live! Here in Minnesota, it’s definitely a waiting game. When other bloggers are cutting their bulb flowers, we’re still waiting for feet of snow to melt! Spring HAS to start inside long before we see it out the window. If you’re getting in the Spring decorating mood, I’m hoping this Hutch Decorating Ideas for Spring (with Vintage Garden Style) will inspire your creativity!

We’ve had this Facebook marketplace hutch for just a year now, and I’ve so enjoyed styling it for each season. You can see it’s ho-hum before and it’s vintage-style furniture makeover HERE. Last year was it’s decorating debut and I decked it out in happy, pastel Easter decor. Wicker baskets even decorated the top of the hutch. You can catch the Easter china cabinet display in the background HERE.
With all the snow we’re still getting this year, I needed a more subtle hello to Spring. This vintage garden style look is easy on the eyes and embraces lots of texture. Here’s how to decorate your china cabinet or hutch with a subtle Spring vibe.
Choose a Spring Color Scheme
For a subtle Spring color scheme, I used whites and creams with mossy greens and rusty brown. Like Spring trying to emerge from the melting snow. Plenty of organic textures and metal and glass keep the display interesting.
A couple of “new” vintage metal baskets give a nod to Easter, along with moss bunnies hopping throughout. Thrifted white dishes and lily-of-the-valley vintage saucers provide a fresh backdrop.
Garden-Inspired Accessories, Combining New and Old
Garden-inspired accessories fill the shelves. New, pedestal-shaped containers in terra cotta and faux rust give the display structure while vintage garden tools and accents fill in the spaces.
Vintage garden accessories to include:
- floral frogs
- garden hand tools
- floral misters
- hose faucets and handles
- mini topiaries
- moss bunnies
Lay, Prop and Tilt your Acccessories
Everything in your hutch display should not be standing up straight if you want a collected look. Lay, prop or tilt some accessories for a more natural, less contrived style. My DIY Repurposed Candlesticks add chippy texture in the corners. Some are standing, some laying on their sides.
A vintage green wicker basket that lost it’s handle still looks good when added to the whole. Old tools spill out as if someone knocked it over.
Decorate for Spring with Fillers
Fillers, the extra textures you add to your accessories, is what makes a seasonal display. Once you get the framework of your decorations in place, finish off the display with seasonal fillers.
- rolled or shredded vintage music
- decorative eggs
- moss, excelsior grass
- rustic spheres: grapevine, moss, wood
- clay pots or pieces
How Do You Decorate the Top of a Hutch?
Once you’ve styled a pretty hutch or china cabinet display, you may be wondering “How do you decorate the top of a hutch?” Decorating the top of a tall piece of furniture can be as fun as styling the inside. I’ve got many ideas and examples to decorate the top of any tall furniture piece HERE. For this Spring hutch display, I topped it off with my vintage birdcage collection. {see more ways to decorate with vintage birdcages HERE}.
I filled the insides of the birdcages with clay pots and saucers, stacking and leaning them. Apple blossom branches poke out here and there for fresh Spring style. A vintage suitcase, an old stool and an upside down basket elevates them to get a nice balance of heights. {see 9 Fun Ways to Decorate with Vintage Suitcases for more ideas}

Thanks so much, Shelly! I’m really enjoying the look, too. Always fun to try something new:)
What a wonderful and helpful post. I loved the rolled vintage music and after seeing yours I’m going to add some to a small leather box. The green mossy bunnies are adorable. I found some cheap ones at Target. Thanks.
Debby
I got a couple from the Target “dollar” spot, too!

Great inspiration! I’m in southern California and still can’t get into light springy decor yet. I’ve started a little garden theme, now you given me some ideas to continue.
Glad it was inspiring! Happy decorating:)
I almost have everything and now I have some brilliant ways to use them. You are so creative, God gave you a wonderful gift and you share it, thanks.
Thanks for your sweet words, Marlene. Always appreciated:)
I love it all!! You do such an amazing job of adding texture and character with the use of unexpected items like hose nozzles and old garden tools. That green transfer tureen is just AMAZING! Such a lovely Spring display, Lora!
Old metal junk makes everything better, Rachel;)
Lora,
What a creative way to display your old pieces. I love that wicker vase/planter with the curved fork hanging out. That little tan vintage bunny is adorable. Love the mossy pieces and the bowl full of wicker (?) spheres. You’ve done such a good job decorating this cabinet. I follow your blog all the time, and saw your pieces in Country Sampler magazine. You’re famous!!!
Thanks so much, Barb! Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, fun to collaborate with Country Sampler! Actually have some more pics coming in the summer issue!
Great ideas today. Love the spring look. I have an armoire with a curved top not flat. I don’t know what to do. Any ideas?
Glad you enjoyed it, Karen! Yes, curved tops are more limited. I think a green foliage garland would be lovely draped from left of the middle, hanging down on the right. You could also add a pretty bow and ribbon for extra. Hope that helps!
Ok, I want to steal that 1st handled basket!! I’ve been looking for something like that for Spring with zero luck here!
Just scooped that up at a shop last week & was actually debating; so glad I went for it! I’ve got to give it a spray of poly to bring out the patina & seal in that beautiful rust, though;)
