How to Build a Centerpiece: World Traveler Theme
All week long I’ve been showing you how to build a centerpiece. I chose 5 very different foundations to begin with, so each would have a unique style. Are you getting the hang of it? Will you be more confident with your own styling now?
Today’s galvanized tray was given to me by my neighbor. I have used it in many spots around the house, but today it’s going to be a centerpiece. And I’ll call this one the “World Traveler”…
Foundation first, then add the vertical elements:
A smaller globe stacked on, once-again, vintage books (you really should pick some up;). I stood up an old wood crate for some great rustic texture.
Just when I think I’ve got the tallest element in there, I add some more. I like decorating with height. These antique clay bottles have become some of my favorites. ( Check out how I got them and their history {“Antique Bottles”}.) Sticks and fake forsythia are perfect for some early spring foliage.
For a little graphic punch and a nod to the circular shape of the globe, I simply laid an old clock face on the crate. Nests, moss and eggs are perfect early signs of spring and I added a real ivy plant for some fresh green. Notice all the textures represented here already: metal, paper, clay, wood, ceramic, real and fake foliage. An interesting variety of textures creates a very rich display.
For some final junky bling I added state puzzle pieces all around the perimeter of the tray. The bright, springtime colors catch your eye and create a fun, whimsical accent. The scrabble tiles provide a graphic punch and decorating with words is so popular right now. I added two green flower frogs {“Flower Frogs”} to the clock face just to finish it off.
And remember, these centerpieces need to look good from the back, too…
A couple more origami flowers {“Origami Flowers, How To Make, How To Use”} left from the other days centerpieces {“The Horticulturist”} and {“Asian Inspired”}, and another clock face (I just nailed it on).
“World Traveler” is the perfect junky spring centerpiece!

Add me to the “World Traveler” group! So excited now. I just got an old globe in a lot I bought at an auction & it’s been sitting in the box waiting for me to get a creative nudge – when I needed a big push! I love that you had so many different styles of centerpieces. My mind is racing with possibilities but can’t get up & drag stuff out now because hubby is asleep…. but I will have something beautiful later today!! Thank you!
I’m so happy I inspired you, Arlene; that was my goal! And what perfect timing with your newly acquired globe! I’d love to see what you come up with-post a pic on my LoraB Facebook page if you have a chance!
