Design Challenge Inspiration
This month’s Design Challenge Inspiration photo comes from Heidi at Eleanor Rose at Home. Heidi shares her beautiful autumn decorated living room where she’s placed this perfectly vintage dresser for extra storage. Love Heidi’s decor style; definitely give her a visit!
Design cues I noticed:
- Foundational decor piece: a vintage dresser

Old Fall Decorations? Rotate Them
Yes, we all get in ruts. You pull out your seasonal bins and quickly throw up that wreath where you put it every year. Here’s my challenge to you: Switch it up! Put that wreath in a different room, on a different wall…maybe even on a piece of furniture or a mirror. Your decor will appreciate the change of scenery;)
When I pull out my seasonal decor, I consciously try and place it in a different room than last year. THIS Leafy DIY Fabric Scrap Wreath hasn’t been hung in our bedroom on our mirror before, so it looks new here.

Create a Fall Color Scheme
The inspiration pic is based on a neutral color scheme. Which I honestly don’t do often in my house because we have 4 colorful seasons here in MN (except when I went neutral on last year’s bookshelves HERE). When you find an accessory with the colors you like, base your color scheme on it. It can be a piece of art, a pretty platter or plate, or in this case my fabric scrap wreath.
When I went to my book storage locker (see what I store in my living room lockers HERE), I chose book binding colors that coordinated with the wreath; so easy and so coordinated!
Cozy Fall Decor is Perfect for Foraging Nature
Summer to Fall decorating is the best time to forage nature for natural touches. You can create the most beautiful floral arrangements from your garden or the side of the road with a couple snips. Pop them in a little water and let them dry naturally. If you’re nervous about what bugs you may be bringing in, squirt with THIS first.
Expand your floral container ideas. You don’t have to use vases. My favorite vessels to put floral arrangements in is my ever growing collection of pitchers. {Check out “Beautiful Ways to Decorate with Old Pitchers” for lots of ideas} Don’t overlook weeds growing in the ditch or branches from trees; the more the merrier!
Thrift & DIY for Unique Decor
Maybe your decor stash is lacking. Seasonal times of change are when thrift stores are overflowing with donations. Sometimes a new basket, a pretty afghan or a “new” pillow is all the inspiration you need to pull a vignette together.
I scored this awesome vintage basket a while back at the thrift. I love it’s shape and texture and have never used it in the bedroom. It fit perfectly between the handkerchief drawers on our dresser.
A few years back I crafted unique Button Sunflower Pillows (get the full How To HERE). I love to pull them out this time of year and spread their happy look around. This one looks cute on my DIY Chair Seat with Scallop Edge and a thrifted blanket throw.

Cozy Fall Textures with Vintage Style
Autumn is the perfect time to pile on the textures in your accessories. The iron horse head that a friend gave me was the perfect touch for this design inspiration. Brass candlesticks, old books, the fabric wreath and wooden mirror…there are too many textures to count!
When you’re decorating, mentally challenge yourself to add accessories in different textures; it will make your vignettes more interesting.
Lighting for the Final Touch
As the nights grow darker, have lots of lighting options. Cozy electric lamps, battery powered candles (These wax birch versions are my favorite) and battery powered lamps that come on with a touch can be placed anywhere and everywhere. (see some of my favorite lighting options for our home HERE)
Lighting is a big part of creating a Cozy Fall Bedroom or any space in your home.
