When the temps drop, it’s time to wrap your home in a cozy aesthetic. Textural neutrals can be used in any room or space and are a great way to enjoy vintage collections and your favorite thrifted finds. Hopefully this Cozy Fall Bookshelf Decor with Rustic Neutrals will inspire your seasonal decorating!
Today’s post is part of our monthly Pinterest Challenge series, where a group of creative bloggers design around an inspirational pic, chosen by Cindy from County Road 407. If you’re visiting from The Ponds Farmhouse, welcome! I’m sure you enjoyed Rachel’s fall decorating ideas for a repurposed mantel shelf; she is so creative and thrifty. I’ll have the rest of the inspiration linked at the end.

Inspiration Photo
This month’s inspiration pic comes from our friend Michelle at Vintage Home Designs. Michelle is such a talented designer and loves to repurpose vintage finds and use them in her styling. Definitely check out her whole blog post for ways to transition your home from summer to fall.

Design cues:
- Neutral style
- Wide variety of textural elements with a natural touch
- Brown transferware
- Old books with pages out
- White pumpkins
- Lamp with woven shade
- Natural light wreath on darker brown handled basket (love;)
- String spools as bookends
- Statuary pieces (bust, planters)
- Mirrored frame in background (think I missed this element)
This was a fun design challenge! Well, they honestly all are:) Let’s see how I brought this look together with my vintage thrifted finds.

Begin Styling with Larger Elements as Focal Points
Styling bookshelves or a larger expanse can be intimidating. Begin with your large accessories that will make a statement first. Hanging a square gathering basket and then putting a rustic wreath inside is a focal point on these bookshelves.

Find cornhusk and other rustic fall wreaths HERE.
Add Symmetry When Decorating Bookshelves
Styling with symmetrical elements on both sides of these bookshelves adds a calming effect. Brown transferware is lined up across the back of two shelves across from each other. Statuary-type brown pieces add weight. Old book pages shredded up add eclectic texture and interest.

Rustic Neutrals: The More the Merrier
Fall is the best time to layer on many natural rustic touches. Especially when you’re decorating with neutrals. Textures make it all interesting! Pinecones, faux cotton, fabric pumpkins, shredded paper, dried foliage, cornhusks, wicker, crockery…this is a feast of textures for the eyes!

Display Vintage Thrifted Collections
If you’ve been treasure hunting all summer, it’s time to show off your thrifted vintage finds! The texture and graphics of old brushes have been catching my eye lately. Their horsehair bristles and interesting handles make them a perfect filler. And there is such a wide variety to be found!
Corral them in an old crock, hang them with little hangers or string, or just set them in a display. They’ll make people want to come in for a closer look to enjoy the neat graphics.

Never Enough Vintage Books
When I’ve staged client’s homes through the years, I’m always asking if they have old books. You can never have enough pretty old books for styling. I love this simple line of neutral colored old books with eclectic book ends. I placed a small rustic wooden stool at one end and a simple string spool at the other. They add great architecture to the simple line of books.
Style books in different ways to add interest. Stand them pages out or bindings out, lay them, open them standing in the back. There are so many ways to use old books in your decor.

Add a Cozy Aesthetic with Lighting
Do you keep tweaking your decorating as the days go by? Something needs to be moved just a little bit to the left…or maybe swapped up?
I had tucked my favorite little battery operated, remote control candles in a couple spots in this bookshelf display (you can find them HERE). But there was still something missing. Then I remembered Michelle’s woven shade lamp in the inspo. pic. I remembered the little rechargeable lamp I put in my Early Fall Hutch. Guess I definitely need to get another one of these; they’re so handy, and so inexpensive! You can use them anywhere and everywhere.

After:

Whew, now I can sleep better;) The light is balanced throughout the display and adds just enough interest to the scene. You can find similar woven shade, rechargeable lamps HERE. They have 3 different light settings you adjust with the tap of your finger. Definitely get more than one…learn from me. I love the different lighting effects in one cabinet display; perfect as the nights grow darker. Cozy aesthetic, indeed!
Neutral Decor; Anything But Boring
I’m usually a seasonal color girl, but decorating with neutrals is anything but boring when you incorporate lots of interesting textures and shapes, don’t you agree? It was so fun to pull together this fall bookshelf with thrifted vintage finds and lots of natural, rustic textures.

Lora, your vintage display is perfection! I love the warmth, textures and way you combined so many different elements. Always inspired by your designs!
Thanks so much, Cindy!
Love, using old paint brushes was a brilliant idea. You put all your elements together in such interesting ways. Love how you combine them and love the lamp.
Thanks, Carol!
I always appreciate your new ideas. I think fall always lends itself to more neutrals. I find myself with more neutrals in early September and then again November after the oranges of Halloween are toned down. For me the calm colors of Thanksgiving (probably my most favorite) prepares for all the burst of color as we go into December
Yes, love your strategy;)
Lora I can always count on you to come up with something unique and amazing! I adore your bookshelves and your combination of brushes and natural rustic textures. By the way the lamp is super cute!
Thanks, Michelle! Yes, that lamp is a winner, and I’m getting another for sure;)
Lora, I LOVE that you have used vintage paint brushes and shoe-shine brushes in your display. All the texture of each piece gathered together in your built-in cabinet really sets a nice fall tone. And I will need to look for one of those little battery lights! I keep the tall torchere over in our cabinet corner as that area is always dark in the evenings.
Thanks for all the lovely ideas! The stool is really cute as a bookend, too. <3
Big hugs,
Barb 🙂
It was fun to design around Michelle’s beautiful shelves;)
Lora,
I am obsessed with your paintbrush collection! What a lovely way to display them. They add such texture and interest to your shelves! Happy Last days of summer. 🙂
It is fun to find different brush versions to add to the collection;)
I adore those paintbrushes on display! Such a fun, clever idea! I love how your brain works!!! I sure could have fun, shopping my way through your collections 😉.
Gotta love unique textures; especially for fall!
Wowza, your built in is so beautiful and I love the way you styled it. The paint brushes and the shoe brushes are so clever and add so much character. Simply lovely!
Thanks, Wendy! We built the glass cupboard and curbside dresser into this space when we moved and remodeled out bedroom. Great storage and fun display!
Adding the little lamp at the end was the perfect final touch. I am a lamp hoarder. In our not very large kitchen, we have 4 lamps. Is that too many? LOL. NEVER! Love your shelf styling. And now I need a small stool and way, way more books. Your collection of paint brushes is adorable, and don’t even get me started on the collection of plates. Gah! Thanks for sharing your talents with us. pinned
Yeah, those rechargeable lamps are my new obsession. Love turning them on with a tap and adding instant ambiance anywhere…tables, glass cabinets, bookshelves. The wicker shade makes it even better!
All those different pieces you used besides your tranferware were really well done. Gave me some ideas since I only have some brown dishes to use, thanks and have a great day.
So glad it inspired you, Marlene!
You had me with the amazing paintbrush hanging from the knob! Clever girl! Such a fun idea to display the brushes with all their texture and fall color. Well done!
Yeah, that big one hanging on the door was a fun find;) Love their texture in the fall:)
Neutral decorating is ok but to me on the boring side. Above looks nice and neat but nothing really draws my eye in…Truly prefer color.
I totally get it, Cathy! I can do it in one corner of my home for a bit, but seasonal colors are my first love:)
Lora,
First of all…the hutch is fantastic! I’d love a piece like this for cookbooks. You’ve styled it beautifully for fall. It’s truly a feast for the eyes.
Thanks, Christy! It is fun to have a place to style a seasonal display in our upstairs hallway;) My grandma actually scored the glass cabinet years ago at a garage sale and never used it. I’m happy to enjoy it every day.
Love it, Lora!! I have a few of those same transferware plates that I’ve thrifted over the years and just adore them…they are the perfect backdrop for any shelf display! You nailed the neutral styling and it looks gorgeous!
Yes, it’s a fun pattern to pull out in the fall! Love loading on the textures for neutral decor:)
I absolutely adore your bookshelf. The lighting does indeed add so much. Your of antique books and brushes is so visually interesting. Such a lovely display!
Thanks, Laura! So glad you enjoyed it. Yes, lighting makes all the difference.
