Thrifted Craft Supplies
Church sales and estate sales seem to be the best places to find craft supplies in my area. And you can get them fairly inexpensively. If you find an estate sale of a crafty lady, you can bring home all her half done projects! Makes me think how excited shoppers will be at my someday estate sale;) It may be kind of a morbid thought, but we can’t take it with us, and there’s always undone projects, right? I like the idea of making someone else as happy as I get when I find these craft supplies!
Here’s a list of craft supplies I like to scoop up, if they’re inexpensive:
- wooden thread spools
- fiberfill stuffing
- pillow forms
- embroidery hoops
- yarn balls
- trims and embellishments: rick rack, lace
- vintage sewing packages
- fabric yardage
- buttons

Thrifting Undone Projects
It’s also fun to thrift someone else’s undone projects and repurpose them in a new way. Whenever I happen upon an old quilter’s projects, I get excited. Old quilt squares that never got put into a quilt, or a whole pile of vintage fabric or afghan squares that were intended to be turned into a blanket. At a recent estate sale, I picked up several quilt squares with amazingly small stitches. To think how much time this seamstress spent on these, and I got them for $1!
I’m thinking the blue graphic pieces can be upcycled into fabric flags as Patriotic decor. And I’m hoping to add buttons to the flower quilt pieces and frame them in embroidery hoops as craft room wall decor. Stay tuned!

Craft Supplies Display
Everyone always likes to see how pieces I’ve found thrifting get styled in my home. These craft supplies got styled into creative craft room decor pretty quickly. Here are some ways you can turn your thrifted craft supplies into creative home decor, in any room of your house!
Put wooden thread spools or craft supplies into glass jars. They become instant art and can look cute and be ready for your next crafting idea. If you don’t have a lid, simply pop a succulent or a flower at the top.

Colorful yarn balls can be used decoratively in so many ways! Here I added garden-fresh colored spheres to toy trucks, a divided drawer and a glass jar. Use seasonal colored yarn balls as fillers in bowls and dishes as a wonderful textural accent.

Lengths of vintage trims can be wrapped around old spools or stored in glass jars by their color. You’ll be able to easily find them when working on a project. And looking at them everyday may inspire your creativity!
This old factory spool is the perfect place to show off lengths of thrifted lace. And this vintage stamp holder gets new life with summer-colored thread spools. I may also pop a cute little daisy in the top of each.

Repurpose Thrifted Craft Projects
Crocheted or knitted squares that never got sewn into a blanket can be repurposed into cute coasters. Colorful granny squares are perfect for the trendy grandmillenial style!

Repurpose Thrifted Craft Room Supplies
Old sewing machines, sewing supplies containers and other craft room accessories can be unique craft room display. Simply add faux foliage for seasonal interest. I added mini succulents to these cute vintage sewing supplies drawers. And an old sewing machine that was my grandma’s looks cute sitting high on the shelf with succulents.

Upcycle Craft Supplies
Thrifted craft supplies can be the perfect, inexpensive materials for your next project. Luckily I had several wooden embroidery hoops on hand to make this cute and simple handkerchief wreath. It’s so nice to have supplies on hand, so you don’t have to run to the craft store when the inspiration hits!
See “Nostalgic DIY Handkerchief Wreath” for the full how to.

I hope I’ve convinced you to keep an eye out for crafting supplies the next time you’re thrifting! They hold so much potential for DIYing and decorating. And it’s so nice to not have to run to the craft store for supplies when you’re in the middle of a project. Bonus-usually thrifted craft supplies are more inexpensive then buying new.

Sharing at these lovely parties:

Such a great post Lora! Crafting supplies can be so expensive if you buy them from the store. I too love unfinished quilts. Love it when you ladies do these posts together.
So glad you enjoyed it, Anna:) Yes, you can get thrifted craft items so much more inexpensively if you have it on your radar.
Some I have done with my craft supplies, but you always give me so many more ideas, thank you, you are a blessing to me for creativity.
Thanks, Marlene! I appreciate your sweet words:)
I have so many things to say – LOL. First, I have thought the same thing about making someone else happy when I die. My kids don’t and say they won’t want anything I have. Honestly, they’re missing out. Second, I have got to come up there one of these days and go thrifting with you. I never ever find anything as good as you do! Not adorable yarn balls, not fun little squares you can turn into coasters, and even the handkerchiefs are boring and not as colorful as yours. And don’t even get me started on the brooches! Lastly, one of these days if you ever get the hankering to have a garage sale, I’m making the trip! You just have to give me a week’s notice so I can rent a U-Haul truck! Oh, and one more thing. I totally forgot about that picture of me and the bad hair day I was having. Thanks for that. 😉
I love that pic of you! And sadly, it may be my estate sale, cuz I don’t part with things easily;) Just when I do, I come up with an idea and regret it! Actually, I may come your way…just saw something I’d like to go to in TX. Will check it out and message you;)
Wow! You make amazing creations; you’d never know these are thrifted finds. Thanks for sharing! Pinned!
I love the challenge of using things in a different way, yes!
AMAZING!!! Okay okay…you’ve turned me on to thrifting for craft supplies. Those quilt squares are incredible!!! Love that…I could totally turn those into a piece of pretty wall art.
Thanks for sharing, Lora!
Yep-that’s what I intending to do with them, Rachel! The stitches are so small they’re almost invisible; so much work went into them.
Lora,
I’ve recently been checking out the craft sections of thrift stores and everything is so inexpensive. You’ve inspired me to dig deeper for these supplies. I love the quilt squares and the wooden spools of thread. Great post.
So glad you enjoyed it, Rachel! Yes, the craft section is a must visit:)
Lora, every craft supply is swoon-worthy. That blue dump truck with the blue yarn, oh my goodness, and all those buttons! So inspiring!
Glad you were inspired, Ann! They’ve definitely inspired me lately:)
