Choose an Inspiration Piece
When antique store shopping with a friend a couple months ago, I picked up this sweet bluebird paint-by-number. I loved the different hues of blues and greens with the outline of black and bit of brown and white. It just typifies the early days of Spring. This painting launched the color scheme for my bird themed Spring hutch display.
Choosing an inspiration piece like this can make your decorating easy. Walk around your home and pick out the dishes and accessories with similar colors that you can include. Once you have a pile that looks similar to your inspiration piece, you can start styling.
Vintage Dishes Collections as Spring Decor
Because of the wonderful variety of blues in this art, I pulled out my vintage dishes collections in these colors. I’ve had Turquoise Blue Fire King milk glass and Aqua Sandwich Glass Depression sets for many years and hardly use them anymore. I wanted to be able to enjoy them for the season. I’ve also been picking up Bluebird china pieces here and there.
Stacked colorful dishes are a great foundation for your styling. You can also stand them in the back of your display if you have a plate groove, or with plate stands. Gold rimmed accessory pieces stand in the back along with a large serving platter.

Use Bird Themed Art as Spring Decorating
Bird themed book illustrations and framed art are tucked here and there. The paper adds a nice contrasting texture to the shiny dishes and carries through the bird theme. Frames and books are propped in the corners. Small frames can be hung on the back wall of your display.
Add A Variety of Textures to Spring Decorating
As I’m styling, I think about all the different material textures represented. I like to incorporate as many as possible to reflect the season.
Some of the textures seen in this Spring display:
- terra cotta
- rusty & galvanized metal
- glass and ceramic
- wood
- organic-sticks, moss, nests, foliage, feathers, flowers, eggs
- paper
- stone

A large variety of textures will add beautiful layers to your decorating and styling. It will develop a collected over time vibe that reflects your unique style.
Decorate with a Variety of Birds
Thrifted vintage and new bird figurines abound in this display. They’re made from a variety of different materials, but all work together. Just like in nature they can stand on logs, be sitting in nests or be foraging on flat surfaces. They’re all different sizes. It would be a fun I Spy game to see how many are actually tucked in.
Spring Decorated Hutch Inspired By Vintage Art
When you see the whole look put together, you can spot all the different colors in the painting. A variety of blues with a bit of white, gray, brown, and green with a bit of black for definition. It really is fun to choose an inspiration pic to style around.
A couple of new pretty pillow covers fit in nicely with the look. Find my favorite pillow covers for the season HERE.

I love your spring hutch ! I have some bird items but you win the prize !! Fantastic display.
I will have to see what else I can pull out from my stash. I believe the beautiful paint by number is a Blue Jay. Happy Spring !
Yes, you’re right, it’s a Blue Jay. We have them in the yard; they’re kind of mean and chase the little birds away. But I do love the PBN version;)
Always love to see your God-given creativity! Your mom would too.
Birds and Spring certainly go together and you have done a great job. I love all the colors, pretty plates, and birds you have used.
