Decorating is like Dominoes; One Thing Leads To Another
Decorating is like Dominoes. You start one thing and it leads to another, that leads to another, that leads to another. Am I the only one this happens to? I started with a little refresh, DIY painting job in my kitchen and I think it’s leading to almost a whole re-do of my back entry! Please tell me I’m not the only one that gets in deeper with these redecorating projects than originally planned?
I shared with my newsletter subscribers last week (if you’d like to hear from me more personally each week, please sign up at the top or on the side) that I was finally going to try to finish the kitchen painting I started over a year ago! A kitchen is in such a high traffic area, it’s kind of a pain to work on. Hence, the procrastination!
As the world outside was turning into a snow globe, I started the process of painting with a pretty, soft gray (some in my house call it white).
First I got out all my drop cloths and covered my black granite countertops; didn’t want to spill paint on them! Next I taped everything off with painter’s tape. I have a shaky hand, so I don’t trust myself with anything (probably too much use of the palm sander)! Next I wiped the walls down with TSP to cut all the kitchen grease that I’m sure had built up over the years.
Next I filled all the nail holes left from taking everything down. Can you see why I needed to paint? Somehow the screw heads have gotten shadowy; don’t know why that happened. I am also tired of the butter yellow and have been wanting something more neutral. (I still love the blue ceiling, though:)
Next I did all the cutting in (that’s painting all around the edges where the roller can’t reach) and then painted 2 coats with a roller.
When I got to the back entry (the left side of the picture above) I had a last minute idea that a sheet of beadboard would wear better in such a high traffic area. I quickly texted Mr. Fix-it my idea while he was picking something else up and when he got back, he got to work installing it! Now I need to find a piece of trim for the top to finish it off.
This was the first extra task that got added to the list! I am excited to see some freshly painted white beadboard here though; very classic farmhouse.
As we go around the corner, you’ll see that something needed to be done with the door. Little Miss Daisy jumps up to look out the window and has trashed the light colored paint. Anyone else have this issue?
After brainstorming all the colors I could possibly paint the door to help with this problem, I decided black chalkboard paint would disguise the best. I got the first coat on and was already pleased with the result! I think it has a little Joanna Gaines flair now:
I’m already enjoying the cooler, crisper tones rather than the warmer yellow paint.
But like I said, one thing leads to another just like domineos falling…
The cream-colored outlet covers aren’t going to look good with the more crisp look. And it doesn’t help that I inevitably swipe them with the roller!
And then there’s the open shelves that our everyday dishes sit on. I think I need to bring some rustic wood to this end of the room to balance out the cool, “new” coffeetable {“From Vintage Roof Rack to Cool Coffee Table”}. And getting some more industrial brackets for the shelves would be good too.
See how this redecorating thing just keeps growing?
The dresser in the back entry was a store leftover {“Do I Miss It?”} and has never looked good in my house in it’s Calamine shabby state. I’m thinking a light blue or gray for it’s new outfit?
And I’m regretting how I green-washed the character-rich wood wall that used to be the outside of our house. I think I need to sand and poly this wall so it looks like the pantry {“Pantry Organization, Vintage Inspired”}. I think the classic combo of the black door, the white beadboard, the light gray walls and the beautiful wood sheathing wall would be awesome! Trying to figure out how to stand on scaffolding over the stairway might be tricky:( And that big, empty bracket hanging there? That’s my former store sign bracket and I want to create a family sign for it with one of the chalkboard mirror frames from Happy Girl’s grad party {“Junk Beautiful Photo and Memory Display“}.
Now, if I just had a whole crew of people to carry out all my ideas, like Chip and Jo do, right?
Dominoes. Redecorating is just like Dominoes all lined up. You push the first one over and all the rest just come along for the ride! One thing always leads to another! Have you ever gotten into a “simple” project and then found yourself in a way bigger one? I guess I just need to tell myself I’ll love it when it’s done and hopefully be satisfied with it for another 8 years!

Hi, love the new color ! Yes, one thing does lead to another, lol… we have 4 Rottweilers and have cut a sheet of clear plexiglass to fit the size of the bottom of the door to cut down on the wear and tear to the paint. It’s worked for us. 🙂
Can’t wait to see the finished kitchen ♡
Wow, Betty, 4 Rottweilers!! I guess my one doggie pales in comparison with what you have to keep up with! I’m loving the newly painted wall too and just need to keep going on this little project!
You have such good ideas–can’t wait to see it all finished. Love the old chest; be sure to show us what it looks like when you’re done with it.
Thanks, Vikki! I definitely will show everyone. Think I’m leaning toward painting it gray with some handpainted white details…
