Thrift Winter Art Scenes
Thrifted winter art can be a great way to focus your home on the season. If you can find it off-season, you’ll have the best pick! When you hit those Spring and Summer estate or garage sales, tell your winter-decorating self to scoop up any framed art or accessories that could be used in winter.
Your winter art can guide your decor’s color scheme and style. Years ago I picked up this cute vintage tin because the yellow farmhouse reminded me of my own. I pull it out each winter.
Last Fall I scooped up 2 hand painted winter cabin scenes at an estate sale. They’re the same scene in small and large version. The artist must have done the smaller first and then decided she wanted the larger to be more subtle. I like that using them together tells an artistic story;)
Decorate with Subtle Colors
Winter house decor is the most comfortable with subtle colors. White, cream, blue, green, gray and brown will give your home a hushed tone. Use winter art as your color scheme guide. I have two paint by number mountain scenes that have the perfect combo of colors. I love to play off their tones.
Vintage hard covered books in blues and greens can be tucked here and there for structure and texture.

Pile on Cozy Textures for After Christmas Winter Decorating
Not only can cozy yarn blankets keep you warm, yarn accessories will make your brain feel warmer! Here are some yarny textures to decorate with in the winter:
- thrifted crocheted and knitted afghans
- DIY yarn wrapped spheres and poms
- DIY braided yarn ribbon
- upcycled sweater pillow covers
- scarves and mittens
Decorate with Your Collections
Bring out your collections and enjoy them! Incorporate them into your decor. You don’t have to have them out all the time; rotate them in and out. Use them in a new way.
For months my sizeable old suitcase collection had been towering to the ceiling on one side of the fireplace. For a different look, I stood them on end and separated them on either side. It’s a more casual, collected look that I’m enjoying.

Decorate with Repeated Shapes
Somehow our brains are more calm with repeated shapes. I don’t do it consciously, but as I looked around the living room winter decor, I realized it’s all about circles. Old clock faces to highlight the new year, yarn snowballs, and my globe collection are all round. It creates a cohesive style that’s calming without even realizing it!

Winter Mantel Decor with Organic Natural Textures
Foraged, gathered or purchased organic textures are a beautiful way to decorate for winter. Evergreen sprays, branches, sticks, pinecones, logs or slices. Fill a vintage find with them and you have instant decor.
If your container is large, fill the bottom up with crumpled newsprint, fabric or plastic bags. Then you can arrange your natural accents on the top.

Last, But Not Least, Use Light for Cozy Winter Decor
Dark nights need plenty of twinkle to make cozy. Small evergreen trees tucked here and there will glow with white twinkle lights. Small lamps can cast different light than overhead lights. And battery powered and real candles add ambiance. Try to make sure you don’t have any dark corners or walls in your winter decorated home. Have a light feature on every plane.
I hope these winter house decor ideas will help you embrace the season and not dread it too much! Non Christmas winter decor can be cozy and welcoming and can help you endure until Spring arrives!

Hi Laura: Just love your Minnesota Cool. Does my midwest MN native heart good to see the sky’s a hard thing to come by in NE! I love the way you filled your corner with vintage suitcases too, with the addition of the lamp. I have a a small collection of old suitcases and trunks and I love them. Great storage for my small home. Hiding in plain sight. Great job.
So glad you enjoyed it, Shelley; thanks!
I LOVE it all, Lora!! It’s so neat how you used circles and spheres without even realizing it but how cool!!
All of your thrifted art is my fav 🙂 Hope you are well, friend!
It’s quite funny how often I realize I’m decorating with similar shapes;) Kinda loving this non-winter we’re having!
What fun ideas. I love the skis.
They are fun to enjoy as winter decor; thanks, Renae!
Hi Lora
I like your “matching” winter paintings! I couldn’t see or read the artist’s name on either of them in your photo. Could you let me know – I want to see if I can find anything else done by the artist. Thank you for another enjoyable post!
They are unsigned, Beth:( Obviously just someone who loved making art, but never probably did it professionally. There is a partial name on the back of the small one and a date of 1964, but I can’t make out the name.
