Vintage Quilt for Tablecloth
Since this blog hop was named “Homespun Holiday”, and my friend Laura at Decor to Adore is an amazing seamstress, I decided it was only fitting to start with a quilt! I recently picked up this beautiful antique quilt at an estate sale. Right from the start I pictured setting a table with it. I love it’s gypsy vibe.
How homespun is that? I bet quilt maker Esther Stinson never pictured her handmade quilt being used as a tablecloth!
This beautiful old quilt was very heavy and had several wear spots and a couple holes. I also did not think the backing fabric matched the top. I got to work reviving it so I could use it as my tablecloth. In “How to Easily Fix an Old Patchwork Quilt” I explain how I revive these old beauties. This project is a little different, because I only want to use the top of the quilt.
With my favorite sharp little scissors (get them HERE), I ripped the binding seam all around. I removed the heavy padding, the binding and the backing. I was left with the beautiful quilt top. I then washed it gently in the washing machine and dried it in the dryer. I will eventually finish off the edges and repair some spots on the top, but I’ve got a table to set now!
Milk Glass and Vintage Finds as Centerpiece
As a backdrop, the dining room hutch is filled with my milk glass collection for Christmas. {“Woodland Inspired Christmas Hutch Decor with Vintage Milk Glass”} I kept a few pieces out to create the centerpiece on the table. I had found this wonderful long galvanized wire metal piece this summer. Inside I placed candles and milk glass and a few live winter plants. Pinecones fill in the spaces for more woodland texture.
Vintage 25 numbers are simply clipped to the edge as a Christmas touch.
Layered Mix and Match Dishes with Thrifted Finds
For an eclectic look I mixed and matched several types of dishes. Milk glass goblets were just found at a vintage shop inexpensively. A set of black and white enamelware dishes were found at an estate sale. I combined them with green glass dishes that were my moms. These are all subtly colored so the vintage quilt tablecloth can be the star of the show.
My favorite cedar placemats are at each place setting’s base. Then I layered a galvanized charger with a white lacey one for a snowy touch. (Find cedar placemats HERE. Galvanized chargers HERE.)
Mini Woodland Scene
Each place setting is treated to it’s own mini woodland scene. Enamelware cups and small milk glass bowls are filled halfway with epsom salts. Mini deer figurines, mini bottle brush trees and small pinecones are placed inside to add whimsy to each person’s place. (Find mini deer HERE. Mini bottle brush trees HERE).
A clip on candle and a placecard standing in a vintage flower frog also add specialness to each setting. (Faux candles can be found HERE. Printable placecards can be found HERE.)
Spread the Woodland Theme All Around
The woodland theme is spread throughout our small dining room. The hutch is filled with a collection of deer. By the bay window, two creative DIY projects create a coordinated vignette. The Bottle Brush Tree Winter Wreath hangs on a Repurposed Old Door Tree. Woodland animals, plants and a faux candle cozy up the base.
Add Cozy Scarves and Afghans
In “12+ Creative Ways to Decorate with a Thrifted Old Scarf” I gave the idea of tying a scarf on the back of a chair. But if the scarf’s not long enough, you can also pin the knot to an upholstered chair back like I did here. Another way to add cozy texture and winter pattern is simply to drape a plaid blanket over your chairs.
Cozy Woodland Table with Vintage Finds
Just like cozy quilts can give warmth on a bed, using a vintage quilt as a tablecloth will welcome your guests at the table. Layer on mixed and matched vintage finds and add fresh plants and candlelight. And add a few woodland animals for whimsy. Your cozy table setting will feel like a blanket of love even before your delicious food is served!
