Wood Breadboards for Kitchen Function and Display
I have to admit I was raised on plastic cutting boards, but the latest wood breadboard and charcuterie trend has changed me. Wood breadboards are much more aesthetic in my kitchen and can be used in so many ways. I only own a couple, but would love to expand my collection with handled versions; maybe even some vintage ones for fun.
Wood breadboards give instant organic style to your kitchen. They come in a variety of different woods that can provide many different grains and colors. Many kitchens are made up of a sea of hard materials-granite, metal, tile. Wood provides a natural texture that balances out the others.
Ideas for Using Wood Breadboards:
- Lean against the backsplash to display a natural texture.
- Serve appetizers, dessert, or a whole meal as a charcuterie.
- Use small versions at each place setting for a sit down meal.
- Hide your electric outlets and switch plates by leaning them in front (photo styling tip).
- Display cute printable art with washi tape. (You can find this breadboard printable in my free Resource Library, along with many more. Simply sign up to become an Insider to access: see HERE)
Hang Open Wooden Shelves
Instead of having a line of closed upper cabinets, hang wood shelves instead. Dishware and other everyday items can be easily reached by you and your guests. Character-rich old wood shelves on metal brackets provide a cozy farmhouse style. Fill the shelves with utilitarian and pretty items that convey your decor personality.
Display Wooden Bowls
A few years ago when I was styling our kitchen to possibly sell our house, I realized I needed to “un-vintage” my kitchen a bit. To achieve a more eclectic look, I bought a couple of more contemporary-looking bowls in a light wood. I was amazed at how they switched up the decor to a more modern organic style.
Recently I picked up a darker walnut salad bowl set. I love how the different wood styles and shapes give an organic vibe just sitting on the top shelf. Wood kitchen accessories are definitely trending; add a few to your kitchen to update your look!

Display Wooden Utensil Collections
If you’re a collector of vintage wooden utensils, show them off by displaying them in your kitchen. Whether you’ve got a hoard of beautiful wooden spoons, or your grandma’s rolling pins, display them in a container as art to add the wood texture to your countertops.
Repurpose Vintage Crates and Upcycled Vintage Finds in the Kitchen
Adding old wood character to your kitchen can be as easy as repurposing vintage finds in new ways. Get more wooden crate decorating ideas HERE. Use vintage wooden finds as side tables, to corral kitchen things or to display pretty seasonal decor. Repurposed and upcycled wooden accessories will give your kitchen personal style!

Decorate with Wood Furniture in Your Kitchen
Kitchens are often a sea of hard materials, as I mentioned before. Incorporating a piece of wood furniture adds to the cozy feel of the room. Whether it’s an upright old cupboard or a repurposed coffee or side table, a wooden piece of furniture turns your kitchen into more than just a utilitarian room.

Build Wood Accents Into Your Kitchen
With some DIY skills, you can build wood accents into your kitchen. Old wooden doors can be repurposed into cupboard doors, vent hoods can feature rustic wood, or plank walls can be a feature. Adding wood accents will give your kitchen organic decor style that comes from mixing in natural textures.
When we designed our kitchen, we topped our tall, dividing cupboards with wood. Mr. Fix-it also installed vintage wood doors on the bathroom and the pantry. Adding the softer texture of wood in with the granite and stainless steel creates a collected, eclectic style that’s classic, yet updated.
