Pretty Vintage Garden Vignette Ideas
How to style a pretty garden vignette with vintage finds in 5 easy steps. Tips to guide your decorating for vintage garden style.

Spring gardening season is my favorite time of year! After a long winter’s nap, I’m ready to embrace everything garden-themed and get planting; give me all the flowers! Our frost date isn’t until May 15, so this Pretty Vintage Garden Vignette Ideas post was a great way to get started while I’m waiting.
Today I’ve joined my Design Challenge friends, organized by Cindy at County Road 407. Cindy chooses an inspirational pic and we all design around it; one photo, lots of ideas! If you’re visiting from French Ethereal, I’m sure you enjoyed Barb’s Spring Porch refresh. I’ll have the rest of the inspirational posts at the end; enjoy!

Inspiration Image
Today’s inspiration image comes from our friend Debra at Common Ground. Our theme this month is “Decorating with Plants” and Debra styled a pretty vignette on her porch. I always love to see how Debra decorates with her amazing collection of vintage finds! If you’re a vintage lover like me, be sure to check out her blog!

Design Cues:
- Scrolly white anchor piece
- Painted tray in background-gold and white
- Pink themed flowers
- Trailing ivy
- Numerous planted pots
- Board and batten backdrop
This was a fun one to design around! Think you’ll definitely see many of these elements designed and styled with my own vintage vibe. Here are 5 steps to a pretty garden vignette.

Pattern Play: Choose a Decorative Backdrop
I love the idea of using a decorated tray outside on the porch. It’s like artwork that anchors and inspires your vignette. Last year I styled my porch cabinet with floral tins, and it was like a garden bursting with colors (“Tips for Styling a Stunning Vintage Floral Tins Display”.
I recently picked up a pretty gold with white flowers vintage tray at the antique store where I now have a booth. Yep-very dangerous for me to be there often;) Kind of like when you drop things off at the thrift…and then rationalize to go in and “just check”?

This gold tray with the trailing white flowers and decorative edge was the perfect foundation and backdrop for my vignette. I placed it on my upcycled vintage stove shelf with the fencing edge. It hangs on our porch, which happens to have board and batten siding; perfect!

Gather a Variety of Garden Accessories
Next you’ll want to gather a variety of garden-themed accessories. I happily had just picked up this scrolly metal planter when I was curbside junking (“Curbside Junking Finds”). I also grabbed an old watering can and a couple of clay pots.

As you’re styling, be sure to place the heavier/larger items at the base of your vignette. You’ll notice the pyramid shape my display creates, with the larger pieces on the bottom and smaller items up top.
Include a Wide Variety of Textures
I’m a texture girl and think the wider variety of textures you add, the more interesting your vignette will be. Notice the shelves are wood, there are different metal elements, and clay pots add even more interest. Chippy painted pots and chippy shutters add that vintage vibe I love.
When you’re creating your vignette, think through all the textures you’re using and what more you could add.

Create a Color Scheme
Your vignette will look more cohesive if you choose a color scheme. Here in the north, lavender is the perfect color of Spring-think lilacs;) I picked up these charming lavender topiaries at Trader Joe’s. Love the English cottage vibe of topiaries. Pansies are a great cold-weather flower to start out the season. And the fragrance of the alyssum is so sweet!
I’ll be planting them in pots for the porch, but for now, I just plunked them here and there; this is a getting started in the garden vignette;)

Add Vintage Garden Tools as Decor
Vintage garden tools are the final cherry on top of this cute vignette. I tuck old sprinklers here and there (“Repurposed Junk: Sprinkler Art”). Old shovels, weed pullers and cultivators can stick out of the dirt. See “10 Easy Ways to Decorate with Vintage Garden Tools” for more ideas.

Lora, I love your vintage garden style. Years ago I found 4 vintage garden fence pieces. They have the same pretty vibe as your pieces. Enjoy your spring arrangement
So fun to find unique items to add into your yard and garden; lucky you, Carol!
Lora, you find the best things on the curb! I would happily spend a day junking with you!! The tray is a beautiful backdrop for this garden vignette, and as always, you’ve styled it perfectly!
Thanks, Cindy!
Lora
You had me at vintage garden! I love all your creative ideas and wow so much vintage goodness.
Thanks, Rachel!
Aww, everything looks adorable and springy! I never go into our thrift stores anymore. First, it takes about 30 minutes to get there, and then it’s so convoluted you can’t find anything. The last time I walked in the door then turned right back around and walk out again. No stanks. But I bet yours are not like ours! Plus, I’ve never found anything good. Especially nothing like the gold tray. That is fantabulous. pinned
The gold tray was at the antique store I’m in;) Was a great price, though; probably cheaper than the thrift! Whenever you need a break from the heat, come north and I’ll show you around!
Love your flowers and this is a beautiful setting to see as you sit on your porch.
Thanks, Marlene! Now if it will just stay warm enough to enjoy the porch;)
Lora, your vintage garden display is stunning!!! I love the old shelf… Is it an old train shelf or something like that?? Adding the little garden wire and the beautiful tray ~ really pretty!!! Thank you for the ideas! (And yes, one must put blinders on when visiting any thrift stores… Ha! 😉 )
Pinned, of course, as always to several boards,
Hugs and happy planting,
Barb 🙂
The shelf is an old stove top I picked up in a curbside pile. We added the wood shelf where it would attach to the stove. Thanks, Barb!
Lora, you have loads of plant and vintage inspiration in your post today! Love those chippy pots, which I’m going to try to replicate with some old pots of mine. Wish me luck! Pinning!
Yes, always love finding those old chippy pots. Good luck painting some, Michelle!
