Thrifting a Vintage Floral Tins Collection
Vintage floral tins can be found when you’re secondhand shopping. Church sales, thrift shops, garage sales, estate sales and vintage shops are great places to find these beauties inexpensively. I picked up this pretty platter a couple weeks ago at the thrift store for $1.99. The big platter and smaller plates were found last summer at church sales. I love the vibrant colors for Spring and Summer.
Many of the detailed versions are Daher tins. You can find out more of their history in THIS post that I wrote when I started collecting them. If you look at the back, you’ll see different versions of the Daher label.
My collection has grown through the years. Other vintage floral tins join in a wide variety of colors and designs. Many have gold accents and fit with boho style.
Tips for Styling a Stunning Display
Set out all the floral tins you have and group them by shape. It’s great to have a variety of plates and platters and shapely containers. Daher tins usually have the design all around. Other floral tins will have the design just on the top and the sides.
If your collection is dirty, simply clean them with a squirt of Mrs. Meyers counter spray and a paper towel. You don’t want these to get too wet, or they may rust if not dried completely.
Place the largest pieces first to balance out the vignette. You should also balance colors. I had quite a few black tins, so I made sure to spread them out when I was styling.
Add Other Textures to Your Display
Since the tins are very busy in design, I added neutral-colored textured items to the display. Woven baskets add different levels when you’re styling. I also used old wooden cheese boxes to add height in spots. Vintage casserole carriers add a fun summer look.
I had picked up fun decorative mushrooms on clearance at a couple stores. They add a great contrast to the flowered containers and still fit with the garden theme.
Lastly, I added a robin, faux flowers and the word Bloom to fill out the display. Last year I styled this collection in the same hutch on the porch (see it HERE in a late summer table setting), but this year’s display turned out totally different. It’s amazing how you can use the same collection and get a completely unique display when you add other elements.
On top of the cabinet I added large, solid colored enamelware pieces in bright summer colors. A rustic red bench adds height. The largest floral platter stands in a plate rack. Faux ferns add natural feathery texture.
Creating this garden of pretty floral tins was much easier than planting a real one! Which is what I need to get to next; digging in the dirt. Our last frost date is almost here, so I can get planting seeds and flowers, for lots of pretty bouquets.
