5 Valentine’s Decorating Ideas for Romantic Style
Wondering How to decorate your home for Valentines? Here are subtle ways to add romantic decor
Valentine decor doesn’t have to be obvious with it’s classic red, white and pink boldness. It can be as soft and subtle as a whisper. Just like love isn’t always red hot, your Valentine decor can speak to the sweeter side of romantic love with innuendos rather than bold statements. Today I’m going to share 5 Valentines Decorating Ideas for Romantic Style; a cozy winter welcome for family.
I’m sharing this inspiration as part of a Vintage Valentine’s Day blog hop, hosted by Amber from Follow The Yellow Brick Home. If you’re coming over from Thistle Key Lane, I’m sure you enjoyed Michelle’s fresh decor style! I’ll have everyone’s pretty Valentine’s posts at the end. I can’t wait to see them all!
5 Valentine’s Decorating Ideas for Romantic Style
Let Art or an Accessory Inspire Your Decor
I’m often inspired to decorate a whole room around one accessory or piece of art. A vintage painting I picked up years ago began the subtle, soft colors and textures I used in our cozy living room this year.
If you have a piece of art or a certain accessory you love, let that be your decor launching point.
This painting’s soft blush sky, the gray greens of the stream, and the blues of the frosty trees in the background, along with the brown bark of the tree. is perfect for winter decor inspiration. Whether this art was done by someone famous, or a hobbyist like the rest of us, I love it’s beauty! Out of it’s frame, I simply hung it from a vintage clip with an old window as a backdrop. Baby blue mini ball fringe imitates snowballs falling from the sky.
The pink, blue and green theme is repeated throughout the room on different textures and in varied intensities. Plenty of white, along with an outline of black and brown keeps the pastels from being overly sweet.
My vintage globe collection sits proudly above my great grandma’s primitive cupboard. The blues and greens of the globes mingle with the pastels of my Fire King collection nicely, and once again, stands out against the brown of the vintage floor grate.
Pile on the Cozy Textures!
Where we live, winter is long and chilly; it’s definitely the time to have plenty of cozy throws and comfy pillows nearby! Handmade knit and crocheted afghans are east finds at thrift stores; color coordinate them to your seasonal decor.
The yarny texture is echoed in my easy DIY yarn ball centerpiece {Easy Yarn Ball Centerpiece How-To}. My quilted hearts bunting, strung across old schoolhouse windows are an added vintage texture. An extra length of yarn with pinecones tied on, imitate a scarf on the aqua pillar candlestick. Can you see how the old windows are revealing their former pink and blue paint colors?
Decorate with Your Collections
Roses are a classic Valentine motif and I’ve been collecting dishes and prints with vintage roses through the years. Even though I don’t use them often, it’s fun to pull them out for Valentines and enjoy their feminine beauty-even in the living room!
Different seasons are a great opportunity to enjoy your collections.
I filled the wood bookshelf we recently created {“How to Decorate to Thrift the Look, Vintage Lakehouse”} with subtle romantic accessories with the themed pink, blue and greens. Many different textures create an interesting combination, and I sprinkled in some of my roses collection.
A couple of the vintage birdcages from the “12 Ways to Decorate a Vintage Birdcage for Winter” landed here. And of course, there’s plenty of old books to go around! Vintage books are the backbone of my winter decorating; their textural beauty is useful all through the year! {“Decorating with Books 101 and Beyond”} {Decorating with Vintage Books: On the Hunt for Tabs}
Candlelight and Fairy Lights for Winter Cozy
We love to sit by the fireplace on chilly winter nights, and candlelight looks especially pretty in vintage milkglass. The little strings of battery powered lights are easily woven through vignettes for some nighttime twinkle, too. They can be set on a timer, so they come on automatically every night.
Treat Yourself to Flowers!
Long stemmed roses are pricey at Valentine’s, I skip them. Treat yourself instead to a fresh, live plant; they’re fairly reasonable at the grocery store:) Take them out of those foil sleeves and pop them into a pretty container with some moss around the edges. When you don’t have the garden to enjoy outside, your mental health will be greatly improved with something fresh and live inside!
Winter is a wonderful time to create a cozy nest for your family to enjoy moments with at Valentines! By layering warm textures, muted colors and plenty of flickering and twinkling light, you will draw your loved ones into a space they can enjoy together, whatever you’re doing!

I would love to walk into your living room and settle down in the chair with the pink pillow, pull a throw over my lap, and have a good visit. So nicely done; I could feel right at home!
Wouldn’t that be fun, Kathy? With a crackling fire in the fireplace, too:)

Lora, All of your ideas are just so beautiful! I am totally smitten by the heart pillow and that ticking stripe one!! Perfect spot to cozy up in for the weekend!
Thanks, Christy! My boys get a little irritated with all the pillows they have to move, but comes with the territory of having a mom whose a decorator!
Everything is beautiful! You have created some very pretty vignettes, and I am swooning over that lovely pink pillow. It has been so much fun blog hopping with you!
Thanks, Shannon! Always fun to see what beauty you come up with, too!
Lora,
Yes, fresh plants inside during winter work wonders on how I feel when it is gray and overcast. Your subtle touches for Valentine’s Day are all lovely.
Happy Valentine’s Day,
Judith
Thanks, Judith! I always treat myself to some fresh plants this time of year! Seeing live greens fights the winter time blues!
I love your vintage Valentine’s decor! The pillow is so pretty! So happy to be hopping with you! Wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day! Angelina @ Petite Haus
Thanks, Angelina. The button pillow was made from my grandma’s button collection;)
I just loved your cozy vintage Valentin’es decor! You have a gift for styling!
Thanks for your sweet compliment, Kelly! I do love styling; it never gets old!
So pretty and I especially love your heart garland.
I made the heart garland years ago from a tattered quilt I couldn’t throw away. I love bringing it out each year for Valentines! Thanks, Marty!
I love all of your Valentine touches.
But, the thing that really caught my eye is the striped pillow. The detail is beautiful with the black buttons and the ruffle. I’m going through fabric and using up what I have and I think I need some pillows with buttons and ruffles.
They were such a score, Carol! I just picked them up last fall at a church sale for $2 each! They’re Ralph Lauren and are down. Think my little sis was pretty sad I found them before her; she has to be pretty quick to beat my eagle eye;) Think I’m going to enjoy decorating with them all through the year!
Lora, what a nice way to look at Valentine decor with a different color palette. Love the button pillow ~ such a cool way to use buttons on a pillow. Your heart banner is awesome too. Thanks for sharing your lovely home on the blog hop.
Thanks, Carol! The heart bunting and the pillows are 2 projects I made years ago and still enjoy bringing them out each February:)
I love the soft and subtle colors! Your pillow is so pretty and the flowers certainly cheered me up! I was thinking the other day that I need to get some flowers. 🙂
hugs,
Jann
You should definitely treat yourself to a fresh, green plant with some pretty flowers, Jann! Glad all the prettiness cheered you up!
You have so many beautiful collections! I love the milk glass with the candles…so cozy and warm! Your home is so pretty all decorated for Valentine’s Day. Great to blog hop with you! Enjoy your week!
Shelley
I have too many collections, Shelley! But I love them all! I use my milkglass collection throughout the year; it’s so versatile! Fun hopping with you, too!
I loved reading your post! So many pretty ideas Your pillow is so sweet and I love your globes and styled shelves!!
Thanks, Kristin! I’m telling myself I need to stop at 3 globes…but I know I’ll cave if I find any more cool ones;) So fun to enjoy the romantic roses decor this month.
I always enjoy seeing your decor, Lora! Your living room looks so cozy and I love Valentine’s Day touches that you added. I’ve never seen pink candlesticks like yours and my eye was really drawn to the lamp on top of your bookshelves. Is it McCoy? I’m glad you included a picture of the entire room so that I can now visual the space when I’m reading your blog. It all looks beautiful, and like always, I really enjoyed seeing your home.
Thanks, Paula! It is fun to see the whole space to get perspective, isn’t it? It’s definitely cozy-you could say small-but it makes for a close-knit family, I say;) The mod aqua lamp is actually from Home Goods years ago. I thought it would modernize all my vintage a little so my house doesn’t look like an antique store. It’s all about the balance, for me:)
I loved every single tip and hints of subtle Valentine’s Day. I especially want to get my hands on that vintage pillow and the quilted heart garland! And oh my word, I used to have that same doll house! At least I think it was the same. Is yours made of metal? Dang it, I can’t believe I ever got rid of that. Mine was quite rusty and had such sharp edges so I thought it wasn’t safe for the kids. Always get so much inspiration from you Lora Bloomquist! – I love it!
I’m so glad you were inspired, Cindy! I made the pillows and the bunting years ago and love pulling them out for Valentines;) And yes, the dollhouse is metal. Picked it up at a summer garage sale for $3. I’ve always loved dollhouses and decided I don’t need to ever grow out of them! I brought it out at Christmas because of the tree shingles and loved how the rocks had the pink tones in for Valentines, and to match my ceiling color!
Love these creative ways to make your home feel cozy, Lora! You have so many beautiful collections and I love how festive your home feels too. I’m crazy about your painting. What a great find! Happy Valentine’s Day, CoCo
I don’t even remember where and when I got that painting, CoCo, but the coloration is so unique; I love it this time of year! And yes…I do have a quite a few collections; a lifetime of thrifting and junking will do that to a person :0
Lora, this is so lovely! The soft cozy colors make me think of spring…and that is a good thing! It’s been fun joining you on the hop!
Thanks, Linda! Yes, this look can usher in early spring nicely; cozy enough for winter, but sweet enough for spring!
Lora, your heart garland and pretty pillow are so lovely. It makes my heart happy to be joining you on this hop! Blessings, Cecilia @My Thrift Store Addiction
They seem to be everyone’s favorites, Cecilia! They’re certainly my favorite to bring out each February:)
Thanks for sharing your pretty Valentine decor at Vintage Charm!
Try not to miss it, Cecilia!
Lora I love your room and the sweet soft touches of Valentine’s Day. Love the windows with the heart garland. What a great inspiration you share. I love the idea of placing balls of yarn in the box with lights. I love that! I enjoy doing the blog hop with you. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Fun hopping with you too, Terrie! I’m so enjoying those cute little yarn snowballs with the twinkle lights. Thanks to Paula at Sweet Pea for that inspiration;) Isn’t it great to get ideas from everyone?
Love your cozy room with so many pretty details to admire including your vintage painting. Stay warm!
Thanks, Michelle! We’ve traded bitter cold for many inches of snow now; but the white stuff is much more enjoyed for it’s beauty!
