Materials Needed:
Styrofoam balls, assorted sizes
Thick yarn, colors of your choice
Fabric scissors (these are my favorite for crafting)
Vintage wooden toolbox or vessel
There are so many pretty yarns available now. Since I don’t crochet or knit, these yarn balls are a great way to enjoy all the varieties and add wintertime texture to my home decor.
Yarn Ball How To
I like my yarn balls to be fairly uniform in their thickness and I like the wrapping to go in all different directions. Here’s how I wrap them:
Dab a little glue on the end where you start, just to keep it in place.
Wrap the yarn around the styro ball in an “X” fashion, 5-7 times, depending on
the thickness of yarn.
Next, wrap the yarn around the opposite direction. Once you’ve created a big “X” on the ball, start going different directions until all the styro is covered.
See how all the different directions are well represented? When you’re done, place a little dab of fabric glue on the end and tuck under.
I had a bag of mixed sizes styrofoam balls, which helps them look more like snowballs. I used yarns in muted tones of gray, beige, whites, and soft aquas.
Arrange Yarn Balls in a Vintage Toolbox
Place your yarn balls in a rustic container, sized for your table. An old wooden toolbox gets more interesting when you divide the top and the bottom. The top and bottom can be used separately for home decor. See how I created this one in “Toolbox Half, Repurposed”.
Then string a length of twinkle lights throughout for nighttime glow. Hide the little switchbox under the yarnballs.
The centerpiece sits on my favorite cedar placemats to add another wintertime texture. You could also tuck evergreen picks and/or pinecones between the snowballs for more wintry texture.
Isn’t it nice to have twinkly lights around the house on cold, winter nights?
