8 Fall Textures to Look For at Thrift Stores
Look for these 8 fall textures when shopping the thrift stores now.
National Thrift Store Day is always in August. What a wonderful day to celebrate, right? I’m always on the hunt for unique and cheap finds to style and live with, whether it’s curbside junking, an estate sale or a church sale {see “A Vintage Junker’s Guide: Where To Find the Good Stuff” and “Curbside Junking Adventures and Tips”}. But the wonderful thing about thrift stores is they’re open everyday and in my metro area, they are plentiful! When it’s late in the summer, my thrifting juices are looking forward to the coming seasons. Here are 8 Fall Textures to Look For at Thrift Stores.
8 Fall Textures to Look For at Thrift Stores
Baskets and Boxes
Autumn abundance looks wonderful when amassed in a rustic basket. Church sales and thrift shops are cheap places to find them. Just give them the sniff test to make sure they haven’t spent too many days in a musty basement. Vacuum and scrub gently with a soapy, soft bristle brush and dry in the sun to refresh.
I realized when I’m styling around my home I can never have enough books or small, wooden boxes to create different levels. Vintage recipe boxes, flat covered shoe polish boxes and other small to medium boxes come in handy and are also great texture.

Metal Accessories
A mixture of metals brings wonderful texture to fall styling. Orange-toned copper, galvanized metal, black iron and enamelware give a little sheen with a primitive touch. Many items can be found in the kitchen and gardening sections of your local thrift store for mere dollars.
See what I repurposed with the mini copper molds and the big gold cake pan: “Tart Mold Pumpkins How-To“, “Easy Cake Mold Sunflower”
Pottery, Dishware and Whimsy
Fall is a wonderful time to incorporate muted, fall-colored pottery into your autumn vignettes. The thicker texture and weight harken the cooler weather and extra layers. I look for warm browns, cool greys, mustard yellows and mossy, olive greens.
Adding animal themed items like horses, dogs, ducks, geese and deer bring life and nature to your styling. Vintage pieces can have beautiful colorations and charm.
Restaurant Ware China
Vintage china platters by companies such as Syracuse and Knowles can be mixed and matched as interesting serving pieces or even dinner plates. They’re striking when used for display, tucked into cupboards, or hung on the wall. Their heavy weight fits the oncoming colder season.
Colored Glassware
Colored glassware in tones of browns, greens and aquas are pretty with the late autumn sunshine gleaming through. I particularly love brown glass vases overflowing with a handful of sunflowers or black-eyed-susans. And aqua ball jars with just-turning-green hydrangeas are a great compliment also.
And, oh, this pink depression cake plate? Pink and brown are a great combo in the fall; it just needs some fresh-baked ginger-snap cookies on it!
Needlepoint
As the weather turns cooler, needlepoint samplers and framed pictures bring an added layer of warmth to the home. I never actually nail them to the wall in a permanent place; they lean and get shuffled around seasonally. If you don’t like the frames, you can delete them and just enjoy the canvas, or give them a fresh coat of paint.
Vintage Books
Last, but definitely not least, be on the lookout for beautiful old vintage books! They can be found for cheap when you’re secondhand shopping and are indispensable when styling your home, event…anything!
Lately I’ve been crushing on vintage books with tabs {“Decorating with Vintage Books: On the Hunt for Tabs”}. Of course, old school books are charming and patterned covered Reader’s Digests are stylish, too. There are so many ways you can decorate with books! {“Decorating with Books, 101 and Beyond”}
I hope this list of 8 Fall Textures to Look For at Thrift Stores has got you pumped up to treasure hunt! I’d rather thrift (or flea market!) than go to a regular store. OK, I have a booth to keep filled, but I have developed a love for vintage and I repurpose a lot of my thrifts. I make raffle theme baskets for my church bazaar and a group I belong to often incorporating my home made treasures (soap, sugar scrub, bath salts, etc.). I collect too many things and love adding to my collections. I am not ready to think about fall yet but I agree with all of your suggestions!
I’m sure your baskets are amazing, Kathy! They sound like a wonderful collection of goodies. Awesome that you can use your “hunting” and making talents to bless your church!
Uhhhhhh I’m drooling over here!! 🙂 I’m addicted to thrifting…I love all of your suggestions for fall textures, Lora!! Copper, amber glass, and olive colors are some of my favorites!!
I can tell you’re excited for a new season, Rachel! I’m always craving the colors and textures of the next season:)
Love all of your fall textures and the T shirt too! Thanks for sharing @ Vintage Charm!
You sure found some great treasures. I had never heard of National Thrift Store Day until this year. I am marking the calendar for next year.
I had no idea there was such a day and lucky for me I’m off of work today so I shall be shopping like a fiend! I can’t let this day pass of all days 🙂 I love baskets and little boxes, for sure!
Have fun, Angie!
