Pinterest Challenge Inspiration Pic
Today’s inspiration pic comes from Beth at Home Stories A to Z. Beth styled a beautiful, neutral summer coffee table with lots of textural interest. Here are the design cues I noticed:
- square coffee table
- wicker/woven accents
- round ball garland
- candle
- coffee table books
- tray
- garden branches
- blanket and pillow on sofa
Now it’s time to see my colorful take on this challenge!

First, Refresh Your Coffee Table for the Season
Once the Spring coffee table decor was removed, I vacuumed the dust and revived the rustic wood. Mr. Fix-it and I crafted this table years ago, and I still love it. It’s large, which enables me to create fun, seasonal displays, and the bottom rack gives us plenty of storage for reading materials. You can see the whole DIY in “From Vintage Roof Rack to Cool Coffee Table”.
Although the table was originally brushed with poly, it gets dry and scruffy looking with wear. Rubbing on THIS will condition and polish the wood, so it looks fresh again.

Styling a Summer Coffee Table Vignette
I love pulling out my collection of bright summer colored quilts to kick off the season. I drape them over all the furniture pieces for instant color punch. Seeing one of my colorful favorites draped over the loveseat inspired the colorful coffee table vignette.
Instead of a wooden ball garland and a tray, I piled vintage croquet balls in a huge galvanized colander. Whenever I come across old partial croquet games, I scoop them up. We grew up playing this classic game at our family cabin, so these stir fond memories. We’ve also upcycled many old croquet games into fun art through the years:
“Upcycled Croquet Mallet Head Wreath”
“Upcycled Croquet Candlestick”
These projects have been featured in magazines and even hang in the halls of a collegiate school. We enjoy the brightly colored balls inside as decor, and then bring them outside when we’re ready to play our “extreme” version all over our couple-acre yard.
I tucked in a ruler star for a patriotic touch. {“Easy Vintage Folding Ruler Stars How To”}

Styling a Square Coffee Table
Styling a square coffee table in four quadrants makes it easy. Across from the colorful croquet balls and artificial grass underneath, I placed a colorful thrifted braided circle. On top I set two stoneware pieces with live plants. The two quadrants mimic each other in color, texture, visual weight and shape.
Coffee Table Books for Summer Reading
Summer is a great time to get caught up on reading! I am not a fiction girl; give me all the decorating books to enjoy. It’s so fun to own books by some of my blogging buddies! You can find my favorite reads HERE.
Simply stack your coffee table books in one of the coffee table quadrants for instant style. Top with a seasonally fragrant candle.
Fresh Picks from the Garden
The fourth quadrant of my coffee table will feature whatever is blooming in the garden. A pretty wicker vase (find HERE) has a mason jar with water inside. Currently, our beautiful hedge of bridal veil spirea is in full bloom. It’s arching branches, full of lacey white flowers are gorgeous tucked all over the house. Next will be the peony show; I can’t wait!
Summer Decor in the Kitchen Sitting Area
This little sitting area in our kitchen is the first to get summer decor! It’s inspiring me to spread bright happy summer colors to the rest of the house; as the temps raise, so does the color spectrum at my house.

I adore all that color and those vintage pieces! And I’m so jealous of the size and pattern of your coffee table. It’s gorgina (that’s gorgeous in young people speak)! LOL. Your table is going to look fantastic all summer – that is if you can stand NOT redesigning it later on. 😉 Happy summer friend. pinned
Thanks! Oh, you know things don’t stay put long around here;) And I have so many fun things to enjoy!
Lora, this was so worth the wait!!! I love every part of it with a special wink at the croquet balls. You know they hold a special place in my heart. I am always so inspired by your creative eye and how you transform and reuse all your wonderful thrifting finds.
Thanks for your sweet words, Diane! It’s so fun to enjoy the colorful balls inside!
Love your coffee table and how you used old quilts and croquet balls, it is a cute display and made me smile. So you can sit and enjoy this when it’s too hot to go outside.
Yes, we’ve already had the A/C on a few times!

Yes-nostalgic summer, indeed!
Lora, my favorite is the colander filled with the croquet balls. It’s is so fun. I have a hinged yard stick too. I’ll have to be on the look out for a croquet set for sure now. I enjoy your creativity and always look forward to your posts!
So glad you enjoyed it, Jan!
