Each month Cindy chooses a seasonal, inspirational pic and a group of talented bloggers design around it. If you’re visiting from A Stroll Thru Life, welcome! I’m sure you enjoyed Marty’s flag inspired decor. I’ll have links to the rest of the beautiful, Patriotic inspiration at the end.
Patriotic Pinterest Challenge Inspiration
Today’s inspiring photo comes from one of my favorite vintage decor bloggers, Liz Marie Blog. Liz decorated her home with simple summer Patriotic decor using vintage wicker bottles and old flags. Of course they’re set in her amazingly decorated, vintage-filled old farmhouse where every detail is beautiful. If you haven’t ever visited her blog or IG, definitely treat yourself!
Cindy chose this simple photo so we could be creative with Patriotic, flag-inspired style ideas. Here are the design cues I wanted to include for the challenge:
- Wood furniture backdrop
- Lighter colors with black accent.
- Wicker accents
- Vintage flags
- Red, white and blue color scheme using everyday decor.
See how this pic inspired my Patriotic hutch decor, using everyday vintage finds.

Vintage Transferware and Ironstone Dishes in Red, White and Blue
My goal in decorating the hutch was to get an overall look of a flag without having to use them everywhere. I wanted a backdrop of white with the red and blue patterns in front.
I took out all the green accessories I had filled the hutch with for the Spring vintage garden look, but left the backdrop of vintage white ironstone plates. I pulled out my collections of blue and white transferware and the new-to-me red and white transferware I got before Christmas. I also wanted to use milkglass for that bright white color punch.
Start with the largest pieces first. I placed the big tureens, pitcher and baskets first to balance the weight amongst the shelves. Then stack plates, cups and bowls this way and that until you’re pleased with the look. Use red or blue books to vary heights. If you get stuck, take a step back and revisit it the next day; I had to!
Decorate with Vintage Games and Toys
Vintage games and toys add an element of fun to summer displays. Tuck in old baseballs, badminton birdies-even new superballs. Fill dishes with other textures, too. DIY scrap fabric balls are an inexpensive filler when you use seasonally colored patterns.
I have so many old games and Americana vintage finds, the display overflowed to the bay window ledge. It’s so fun to enjoy these nostalgic family pastimes as summer decor.
Easy DIY Repurposed Vintage Crafts for Americana Decor
Old, foldable rulers can be repurposed into charming stars that are fun to decorate with throughout the year. I’ve got the simple how-to to make 3 different versions in “Easy Vintage Folding Ruler Stars How To“. The smaller ones can be tucked into the shelves, the larger version can make a statement.
Shop old rulers HERE to make your own.
DIY farmhouse-styled Fabric Roses are another fun craft to add to your Patriotic decor. Make them from striped ticking fabric or feedsack fabrics for red, white and blue decor charm. They’re the perfect filler for textural wicker baskets.
Style the Top of the Hutch with Americana Decor
Tall pieces of furniture have prime display real estate at the top. Here’s where you can place larger accessories that wouldn’t fit elsewhere that make a statement. {Get more ideas in “7 Ideas for Decorating the Tops of Armoires, Bookcases (and any tall furniture)“}
For my Patriotic hutch display, I was thinking of the theme, Faith of our Fathers. I placed a church at the center, an old Bible and flags. The vintage red Hawkeye picnic basket was a recent church sale find; I was excited to use it with my Americana decor this year.
And yes, that is an enamelware urinal with the U.S. logo on it. Years ago I bought a whole box of brand new ones at a garage sale (made great $ selling them;) They make great flower vases. And this is kind of a Father’s theme…get it? (wink, wink)
Patriotic Hutch Decor with Vintage Style All Around the Room
The whole dining room is a celebration of Patriotic pride. Vintage bedspreads are my unique and easy answer for tablecloths that don’t need ironing. A grain stripe runner adds the bit of red and looks vintage, even though it’s new.
Vintage flags stuck in an oversized silver flower frog blow in the breeze. They sit on a galvanized thingy I picked up years ago and have no idea what it is. It’s got a drain, so must have been used with water as a cooler or something. I’ve always loved it’s rustic patina. If you like it as is, who needs to know what it was originally used for? It’s beautiful junk to me:)
Styling tip: If you have an uneven surface you’re trying to set something on, just add an open book underneath; works like a charm.

Flag Inspired Decor and DIY
Sharing at these lovely parties:
Lora- There is so much inspiration in this post. I absolutely love the soft almost translucent flags you show in your photos. Thank you for sharing this post on the Home Imagined Link Party.
Glad you enjoyed it, Anna! I’ve had those flags so long; forgotten where I got them.
Wow! You go all out for the holiday! Everything looks so celebratory, and I love the vintage twist you have put on everything! (That ‘special vase’ was a surprise, for sure! LOL!) Pinned!
I love every holiday I can decorate for;) I’m always happy to switch up my decor and use my fun vintage goodies!
Lora,
I love all the vintage pieces in your hutch. Such a fun post. I’m sharing a link on my Sunday, Dirt Road Adventures.
Thanks, Rachel, I appreciate that!
Lora, you have so much cool stuff, you could open a store from your hutch. Love all your combinations of red, white, and blue dishes. Enjoy your decorations.
Thanks, Carol! I actually used to have a store…probably why I like switching up my decor so often;)
I always enjoy seeing how you incorporate ALL kinds of vintage stuff into your vignettes! One of my favorite items was the Sing Out Old Glory book; it really caught my attention. I have just begun using books as risers and for topics of conversation. Usually, I’m just reading them!!!
Oh, I’m so glad you’re seeing the amazingness of books in your decor, Kathy! You can read them, too;)
Hi Lora!
I always like how you list the items you see in the Pinterest Picture Challenge that will help you create your version of the Decor. It’s a wonderful way to learn how to break down any interior/exterior photo you might enjoy to see what pieces make the difference in creating the whole look you admire and use it in your own home! Keep the great inspiration coming!
So glad you appreciate it, Beth; thanks for letting me know!
Lora, I love how your whole dining room turned out!!! the American flags by themselves are really ethereal… Funny that you used an old urinal, lol! Hey, they are still good pieces. 😉 Don’t you just love RWB transferware adding its beautiful shades of color to patriotic decor? Beautiful and nostalgic!!!
Summertime hugs,
Barb 🙂
Thanks, Barb!
Lora it’s always such a delight to see how you display your collections. Your hutch looks fantastic with your red, white and blue transferware! I love your tins and games in the mix too. I would be sad to take it all down at the end summer!
Thanks, Michelle. Usually I’m tired of the bold colors by the end of the summer and am happy to start the early fall colors. I love change:)
Lora, you have a great eye for styling unique, fun and interesting vignettes! You know I’m crazy about those dishes, but I love the other ideas too!
Thanks, Cindy! Looked at your and Postcards from the Ridge’s Patriotic hutch displays for inspiration; love both of your styles!
You always use items that I would have never thought of using. It all looks so pretty and patriotic. Thanks for the inspiration.
I appreciate that, Marlene; glad you got some ideas!

Don’t even know if I own a red bandana, Cindy;) Yes, I’m sure this look will stay till Labor Day; still trying to finish up summer decor in the rest of the house!
I always love seeing your hutch decorated for the holidays. That ruler star with the scrabble tiles is so fun! Have a great July 4th!!
Thanks, Debra! Always love seeing your hutch styling, too:)
