A Harvest Decorated Hutch with The Collected Look
What does collected style mean? This Fall decorated hutch shows you how to decorate with a collected style, using vintage and thrifted finds.

What does collected style mean? And what makes it different? There are many ways you can approach your home’s decorating to get a unique look that reflects your personality and style. You can launch your accessorizing with a piece of art or a favorite collection; these are great ways to get your styling started. Today I want to explain a different design approach, one that is perfect when you love thrifting and vintage finds. I’m hoping A Harvest Decorated Hutch with The Collected Look will inspire you to try this way of decorating, too!

What Does Collected Style Mean?
You may be wondering, “What does collected style mean?” And “What makes collected style different?” Often my decorating is launched by focusing on a vintage collection. It’s the anchor of my styling and drives the colors and textures I use around it. Last year’s Fall hutch decor featured my ever-growing vintage pottery planter collection. (see it in “Cozy Fall Home Tour with Vintage Farmhouse Style”)
But collected style is different than decorating with a collection. Although, you can include collections in collected style. Am I confusing you, yet?
Collected style is curated, yet more haphazard. The final look should seem like you’ve been picking things up over time. The thrifting lifestyle is perfect for this look, because secondhand shopping ensures your treasures will be from different eras. And adding in some DIY makeovers makes the look even more unique and personal.

How Do You Style a Collected Look?
You’d think you could just grab a bunch of stuff and throw it all together, but it takes a little more thought than that. Here are some design tips to keep in mind as you’re looking around your home:
- have a color scheme in mind; focusing on seasonal colors can be helpful.
- incorporate many different textures-ceramic, metals, paper
- add personal touches so the vignette tells a story
- use different shaped items-some square, some round, some tall and skinny, some framed, etc.
- make sure you have enough items to create different levels-books, little stools, wood boxes
- add seasonal foliage and textures as final texture (find ideas in “35+ Decorative Vase Filler Ideas for Beautiful (& easy) Fall Decor”)

This pretty vintage pheasant planter guided my color scheme choices for my harvest decorated hutch. The stack of aqua plates were found at the thrift store for cheap and add a pop of that color throughout the display.

Thrifted and Vintage Finds for The Collected Look
Once you’ve shopped your home, make a list of items you’d like to add to the display. Maybe you don’t have enough metal objects or want some colored glass to catch the light. Thrift stores can also be a great place to find inexpensive faux foliage; don’t be afraid to take it apart or edit the things you don’t like.

Add Whimsy with Furry Friends
Your vignette will look more natural if you add in seasonal animals, bugs or fish. Many of these cute figurines can be found thrifting, or on Etsy. They add a casual, less-contrived whimsy to the look. The squirrels are very busy around our house right now; they’re a natural addition to my Fall decor.

Mix Old and New
To get a collected look, mix old and new accessories. You want the overall style to seem like you’ve been picking things up for many years (or decades). Adding modern accents to vintage is a great way to not have your home look like an antique store.

Sprinkle in Collections
You can include collections in The Collected Look, but they shouldn’t be the main focus. The overall vibe will be a curated, mix and match style that is cozy and comfortable to live with. The vignette can tell a story about a season, like my harvest decorated hutch. The colors and textures are consistent but not too contrived.
I purposely wanted to use Fall colored glass pieces to catch the autumn sunshine. Amber glass vases, a thrift store glass bowl and an estate sale gold stained glass square reflect the warm light. Different brown and white transferware dishes along with ironstone creamy plates keep the backdrop bright. Mixed metal accessories add patina. Modern pumpkins (see “The Best Faux Pumpkins for Fall Decorating“} up top and a wheat wreath keep things fresh. DIY Fabric Pumpkins made from vintage fabrics are a nice mix with the new.

Harvest Decorated Hutch with The Collected Look
The harvest decorated hutch has a layered, almost haphazard Fall look. Curated vintage and thrifted finds I’ve found for years, but could honestly all be found at the same time if you’re shopping secondhand. I layered items densely for a cozy vibe, but you could keep things spaced more openly, too. Everyone’s got a different “stuff” comfortability; make it your own!

Hopefully you feel a little more comfortable with creating The Collected Look in your home styling. If you love thrifting, secondhand shopping and vintage treasure hunting, it should be an easy look for you to achieve!

All super cute ideas Lora! Love the hutch. So many fabulous things to look at each day. I bet your family loves it. Unless they’re like mine. They suck and are ungrateful for all decor! One of these days they are going to miss it and live in their own boring spaces. At least that’s what I tell myself. 🙂
Lora I love how you styled the hutch! That teapot is so pretty and I love all the organic touches!
Very pretty coloring and pieces, I was looking forward to a staging a thrifted collection. Great groupings, nice not to be assaulted by sales pitches for purchased items.
Lora, I could spend all day looking at your hutch. We have so many of the same items! Harvest perfect. Love it all and the way you’ve explained the process!
