Paint an Entire Wall as a Chalkboard Decor Idea
By painting an entire wall with chalkboard paint, you can have a canvas for beauty or function. When we made over Happy Girl’s room into a more mature version, we painted one entire wall with graphite-colored chalkboard paint. She enjoys writing inspirational quotes, sketching flowers and adding a calendar. {“Vintage Modern Bedroom Makeover Reveal“}

Frame a Chalkboard Wall with Old Yardsticks
To get a vintage green-ish looking chalkboard in our pantry, I used a mixture of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint that comes in a self-mix powder. Their Ink Blue and Boxwood in a 2 to 3 part combination makes the perfect vintage-looking chalkboard.

To add to the vintage vibe, we nailed old yardsticks from local businesses around the perimeter of the wall, creating a frame. I brushed on a coat of water-based poly to seal and bring out their patina. It’s a fun accent wall we can use for grocery lists or favorite sayings.

Turn an Old Window into a Chalkboard
When you find a huge window frame in a curbside pile, you need to do something special with it. Mr. Fix-it cut a piece of plywood the size of the window and I painted it with graphite chalkboard paint. We nailed it to the back of the window frame to create a fun wall accent piece.
The repurposed window chalkboard is a great, changeable decor piece I’ve used in more than one place in my home. You can add whatever chalk art you desire, plus you can hang other accessories on the frame. The decorating possibilities are endless!

Repurpose Old Mirror Frames as a Chalkboard Decor Idea
My favorite way to decorate with chalkboards in our home is by repurposing pretty old mirror frames. I love all the details on these vintage dresser mirrors, and by turning them into chalkboards, they are a flexible canvas I can use anywhere.
Simply replace the mirrors with particle board painted with chalkboard paint. Either leave the frames wood or paint them. I added graphic stencil accents to some of them. They travel around to different areas of our home, inside and out and get changed to coordinate with the seasons.

Make Sure to Season your DIY Chalkboard
Before you have fun decorating with your DIY Chalkboard, be sure you season the whole surface. Simply use the side of the chalk stick and rub the entire surface with chalk. Then wipe it off with an eraser or paper towel. You’ll want to do this again if you clean the surface with water.
Improve Your Chalkboard Skills
To improve your chalkboard lettering, get a chalk art how-to book. It will up your skills and enable you to have even more fun with your chalkboard home decor!
