Chalkboard Wall in the Pantry
It’s time for another Thrifty Chicks project challenge with my talented blogger friends! This month we challenged ourselves with anything chalkboard related…because it’s back-to-school month, right?
Make sure you check out all their amazing projects at the end of this post; I can’t wait to see them!

This big pantry wall was looking pretty boring. Instead of hanging something on it, I decided to turn it into a huge chalkboard. We can make lists on it if we’re out of something, or chalk something inspirational. A fun place for a different kind of wall.
I’ve actually been re-organizing and straightening everything up in here, which you can’t see because all the storage shelves are to the right of the open doorway.
I taped off the whole wall and trim. I decided to not use the “regular” chalkboard paint because it’s so black. I’ve already got a black floor and black countertops, so having a floor to ceiling black wall in the pantry would get a little dark.
Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint powder in Ink Blue and Boxwood can be mixed in a 2 parts to 3 parts combo to create an amazing vintage-looking chalkboard. The grey-ish green color perfectly coordinates with the other elements in my kitchen {which you can see more of in “15 Year House Anniversary, Part 2”}.

I brushed the whole wall with two coats of the MMS Milk paint combo. I was really happy with the richness of color it provided.
But my plan wasn’t done yet. Because any good junk project is better with the graphic punch of vintage yardsticks (which I sure proved with my “Sewing Machine Drawer Kitchen Organizer“), and this chalkboard needed a frame!
Mr. Fix-it got out his air nailer and compresser and the dog ran for the hills. He added some wood glue before nailing for a little extra stickiness. Voila’! Instant yardstick frame to coordinate with the other side of the pantry {which you can see in my post, “Pantry Organization, Vintage Inspired”.} Think I will brush on a quick coat of poly to these yardsticks, just to bring out their color and smooth out their differences a little. Poly just makes everything look better!
Before writing on your fresh chalkboard, always season it first by chalking over the whole surface with the side of the chalk and then wiping it with a cloth. This will help to not imprint whatever you write first.
Now it’s starting to look like a honest-to-goodness vintage chalkboard…only on an entire wall!
What will we write on it? I guess time will tell…
I’m thinking kiddos will write what they want me to buy at the store.
I’m sure there will be goofy family jokes.
I was thinking of writing a verse I want to memorize, or a verse I want to inspire my family with.
Any other ideas?
For now, I’m just happy with a refresh on this cute, little, practical place in the Fake Farmhouse!
And for a little tip on lettering: use a stencil set and trace around the letters that you pop out. Instant nice lettering, without a touch of artist needed!

Thanks, K! We’re having fun with it;)
Wow! I dream of having a chalkboard wall some day. Such fun! Love the additional of the yard sticks.
Now there’s a junker’s dream, Tuula! Other people dream for fancy cars or to win the lottery?. We’re happy with chalkboard walls.?
I love the chalkboard wall. The yardstick frame is a nice way to finish it off. Tania came up with a great idea for the grocery list. A little vintage with a modern use!
If you’ve got a wall, I’s highly recommend it, Diana! It just makes the space feel like an actual room:)
Yes, Debra, I love the vintage/modern combo ! Thanks.
SO fun, Lora–I love it, especially the yardstick “frame.” Such a wonderful, vintage-y project. I just might need one of these in MY pantry…
The yard sticks are a nice touch!
Thanks, Fonda! They make my view into there much more pleasant;)
Oh my goodness, Lora – first I love the idea of adding an entire chalkboard wall inside a pantry. Then I love the classic green color you painted it. But the yardstick frame idea is AMAZING! I could see this also in a playroom, games room, home office and the list goes on. LOVE it!
Thanks, Marie! It would be adorable in a play room, school room, etc!
Great idea, Tania! I always forget that picture thing with my phone! Hard to teach an old dog new tricks;0
