Elevate Decor Accessories with Wooden Boxes
One of the easiest way to add levels into your decor accessorizing is with little vintage boxes and old crates. You can use them in any season, because they’re wood and a neutral.
“17 Easy and Fun Ways to Decorate with Vintage Wooden Crates”

I love old boxes with dovetailed corners. Latches, handles and brackets catch my eye, too. If you love old graphics, they can add a fun junky punch to your display also. Old crates, cheeseboxes, cigar boxes or anything that once held material goods is a great thrifted item to have on hand for adding levels to your decorating.

How to Clean and Refresh Old Wooden Boxes
I often find these old wooden boxes in grungy places-holding greasy parts in garages, in scary basements, full of spiderwebs and other gross things. I degrease them with THIS and then dry them in sunshine. Then I seal them with a brushed on coat or two of THIS. Then they’re ready to be brought inside to decorate!

Old Books: Never Enough
You can never have enough old books for decor styling. I collect many different types that I use in various ways.

You can vary the height of any accessory using one or many books. If I have an open box with graphics, I add a book to the top so I can set something there (in the pic above).
Sometimes I color block the book bindings to coordinate with a seasonal display. Other times I like the neutral colored pages to face out. There are so many ways to use old books when you’re styling. Definitely add them to your cart when you’re thrifting!

Vintage Footstools Can Elevate Your Decor
Little old footstools can add so much whimsy to your decor. They were often handcrafted, so each is unique. When you’re searching for them, make sure to look in the children’s toys area; I’ve found several there, hiding out with the plastic toys;)
Give them a makeover with paint and hand painted details for cottage style. Or add fabric for even more personality.

Vintage Suitcases Can Add a Layer to Your Decor
Old suitcases can add amazing vintage charm to your decor styling. You can use large ones at the top of a hutch or bookcase as another layer of interest. You can use smaller ones down low to elevate something else. Style them open for even more decor possibilities.

Baskets Add Texture As a Decor Level
If your display is needing more texture, baskets are great for adding levels. If they’re closed, like a picnic basket, you can set accessories on top. If it’s an open basket, tip it upside down or sideways so you can set something on top or inside. Baskets come in all different colors. Definitely check out the basket section when you’re thrifting!

Cake Plates Can Be Used for More Than Cake
Cake plates come in all different materials and styles; they’re definitely something you should keep an eye out for when you’re thrifting! Cake plates can be tucked into any cupboard or shelf to elevate another accessory. Milk glass, clear glass, galvanized tin, and even wood cake plates can add another layer and texture to any display.
Cake plates can also add interest to a buffet style meal or dessert party. I’ve lent my collection to so many friends for grad parties and weddings. Definitely have a few in your decorating stash!

Vintage Scales Can Elevate Your Decor
Vintage scales come in many different colors and styles. Years ago they were used at retail stores to measure bulk goods. They were used in the home kitchen and even at the doctors office. The graphics on the face of these old scales can add a fun punch to any display. Sometimes they will have a scoop, a basket or a flat holder on top to add items, too. They’re a fun way to add another level into your styling.
