How Do You Combine Modern and Vintage?
Author Stacy West lives in a modern suburban home, yet beautifully mixes vintage and new for a cozy, inviting home. Her book proves she is a vintage lover through and through. She artfully arranges her antique collections and gives expert styling tips to show how you can create cozy collages throughout your home.
Stacy West and Martingale Publishing provided me with a complimentary book for this review post. All opinions about this book are my own.
Stacy shares 3 “Signature Spaces” of her home and shows how she decorates them for each season, along with a neutral look. She explains what inspired each look and her thought process when styling. If you love design and decorating, seeing inside Stacy’s artistic brain is a treat; you will learn so much!

It’s a Small (Vintage-loving) World
Fun fact: I actually know Stacy West. She was a regular shopper at my former vintage store! She owns a successful quilt shop where she designs patterns and sells fabrics, home goods and patterns. You can find Stacy’s vintage-inspired shop at Buttermilk Basin.
It’s so fun to see how a fellow vintage-lover lives with her collections to create a cozy, inviting home! Stacy’s book is truly inspiring and one I will refer back to for display ideas continuously.
Congrats, Stacy, on an amazing book!
The Vintage Inspired Decorating Ideas I Tried
To celebrate this new book, I decided to use 2 of Stacy’s vignette’s to decorate my home for Fall. It was so nice to have her beautiful pages as inspiration; it made styling much easier.
Here are the two looks I chose to replicate:
I collected as many similar items as I could find and started styling. You know I probably have as many vintage collections as Stacy;) Then again…she may have me beat!
Fall Decorating: A Study in Brown
The brown-decorated armoire drew me in when I spied the cute chalk-ware squirrels. I have the same one! Here are the other brown items in the pic I gathered:
- squirrels
- brown pottery
- vintage picnic baskets
- feathers
- jugs/crocks
- brown glass
- old spools
- roll of string
- basket
- old brown books
- old graphics
- metals
- clock faces
Here’s my version of “57 Buttermilk Basin’s” Study in Brown:
I’ve never decorated a whole space with vintage brown accessories before. It was fun! I added small battery-powered brown votives for a little flicker. (get similar ones HERE)
Vintage Inspired Fall Cubby Shelf
This divided drawer cubby is one of my favorites. I styled it for Fall using Stacy’s spice tin display ideas. Small clock faces can be used in many vignettes. Here are the elements I included:
- vintage orange tin containers
- brown bottles
- pottery
- small clock faces
This book is my new favorite! I’m still soaking up all the gorgeous vintage-filled pictures and reading Stacy’s great styling tips, too. It’s definitely influencing my Fall decor this year!

Wow! So many ideas. I have many collections including various pieces of transfer ware that I love!
Oh, transferware is a wonderful collection! Thanks, Mary Ellen!
A lovely book! I love old keys, and have quite a few. I haven’t decided how to use them, but I enjoy looking at them and wondering about their adventures.
Old keys are fun, Noreen! They look great simply piled in a simple bowl, or hung as a collection with an old frame around them. Thanks!
This book looks Sooo good!
For fall I like to bring out my great grandma’s marigold carnival sherbet glasses and mix in some green carnival glass for great autumn vibes!
ooh, that sounds so pretty for Fall! Thanks, Stef:)
Hmm, favorite collection. Isn’t that kind of like naming a favorite child? 😂 Dishes, quilts, books, gardening “ things”, linens- honestly, who can pick a favorite? Love them all! Oh, and landscapes, crewels, and of course vintage florals. The hunt is So.Much.Fun and putting them together to make a home that is uniquely yours- what could be better? Love the book preview! The bits you shared gave a glimpse of delightful- ness 😊
Yes, I think we can answer “E, all of the above”, Shelly! Thanks:)

I was all giddy about entering a give away for this book until I had to state my favorite collection. 🧐 hmmm, that’s a hard one. Old clocks and watch faces that no longer work, my aqua Ball jars lining the windowsills and all have been dated, milk glass and give me ALL the old dishes.
That sounds like a great lineup of collections, Pamela! Thanks:)
My red transferware dishes is what I am currently collecting now. I love this book and will be putting on my wish list for Christmas.
How fun to use them for Christmas and Valentine’s, Pamela!
I love collecting vintage items and have a hard time putting items together. Looks like an awesome book. In the process of selling my home and will definitely have to down size. A process I am dreading 😬
Yeah, downsizing is a bummer, but good to choose what you like the best to keep:) Thanks, Jo!
My favorite vintage collection is the embroidered pillowcases and quilts my grandma and great grandma made.

I love vintage linens. All those table cloths, kitchen towels, doilies, aprons and quilts hold lots of fond memories of growing up with Gramma. I also have a collection of vintage blue Ball jars. A couple are 100 years old. Thanks for the inspiration.
Every vintage linen is such a unique treasure; wonderful collection, Linda!
My favorite collection is of vintage and antique Hawaiian dolls, which started when I lived in Hawaii as a little girl. They still bring me much joy!
What a fun, unique collection, Carol, especially with the fond memories they evoke:)
I have a collection of white milk glass vases and such. I also collect spindles that had yarn.
Milkglass can be used so many ways, Kristin! Thanks for sharing:)

Looks like a beautiful book and great ideas. I am always looking for ideas to include my vintage pottery.
I love vintage pottery, too, Ann! Thanks for sharing:)
Fun Post! Since we’re heading to Thanksgiving and Fall I would say my collection of turkeys, planters and salt and peppers. This book looks like you could spend some fun with a cup of tea and a fire! Thank You Lora!
I love the idea of decorating with browns. I’m going to dig out all my mothers and use them this fall. This book looks amazing Lora. I’d love one😉
She is very good and has great ideas, I love my copper and crocks collections. Thanks Lora for this give away.
Sttoooppp!! Ohhhh my gosh Lora. This is GORGEOUS!!! What an amazing book. I would love to see if she has any pages in there about milk glass or transferware. I love your study in browns…that cubby you put together is just lovely. I adore all of it!!
I have so many vintage items that I don’t have enough room to display. Love seeing Stacy’s ideas and would live to incorporate some of them in our home. Thanks for sharing some of the pages from her book!
These are all nice ideas. I would like to include more vintage decor, just need to make the effort to find some!
What beautiful displays Lora! My favorite vintage collections of mine are my white Mary figurines and bible collection. It’s weird I know!
One of my favorite vintage collections is of my metal picnic baskets. I have 8, in various colors. one green, one aqua, one golden and the rest in several brown patterns. They are in use all the time, 3 for storage in my kitchen, the rest for display. I am so glad I bought them all years ago. I don’t see many for sale anymore. Love all your ideas for using brown ! I use it in the fall too !
P.S. It would be wonderful to win “57 Buttermilk Acres” to help me display and enjoy my family’s treasures!
Seeing the wonderful photo collages in Stacy’s book made me realize how many vintage and antique items I have. They are mostly wrapped up and put away. They are from grandmothers, greats, great-greats and more. I have always loved the little cabinets in your home and decided my large dining room china cabinet was due for a change. It’s been stagnant for way too long with our wedding China and a large collection of Waterford glassware we inherited. Nice things, but boring! I’m getting ready to dig out all those wonderful family heirlooms and some vintage items I have collected to enjoy. Since most of these items are small collections or one of a kind, each section of shelf you see through the glass doors will have a vignette of it’s own. Can’t wait to get started! As always, thank you (and Stacy) for your inspiration.
This looks like a fabulous book! I love how it shows the decor ideas seasonally. I would love a chance to win it! My favorite personal collection is vintage Christmas ornaments.
Oh I love vintage so much! I love using old suitcases, old toys, old picnic baskets! I can go on and on with my love for vintage decor! And would love Stacey West new book on how to get great ideas on more vintage decor!
Thanks for sharing this great give away.
What a beautiful book! I’ve recently acquired some vintage amber bottles and am looking forward to creating an Autumn vignette with them.
I have so many similar items to what you’ve used in your displays! I love how you’ve gathered them together!
Oh how lovely! I like the vintage pumpkins and the spools. Makes me think of my grandma.
