My Vintage Farmhouse Summer Home and Garden Tour
Enjoy a vintage junk filled, flea market style summer home and garden tour. Full of repurposed and upcycled ideas, paired with lovely perennial garden and container plantings.

Part of me is horrified at the chippy paint railing in the picture above. But honestly, it’s the perfect introduction to our trash to treasure, flea market style home and garden. Almost everything you’ll see in these photos is from a curbside pile-furniture, planter containers, garden art. It’s all gotten refreshed, repurposed and beautified; we’ve filled our lives with “potential” others have given up on! Enjoy My Vintage Farmhouse Summer Home and Garden Tour!
I’m joining some of my favorite blogger friends today for a Summer Home Tour! From all across the country, you’ll get to peek into beautiful yards and outdoor spaces, each with their own unique design style. I’m so excited to enjoy all the inspiration!
Thanks to Cindy, from County Road 407,for hosting and organizing us! If you’ve just come from her home in Texas, I’m sure you loved sitting a spell on her porch, sipping sweet tea with her:) There are 8 more tours at the end; pour yourself a glass of lemonade and enjoy!

Welcome to Our Vintage Farmhouse!
Welcome to our Minnesota vintage farmhouse. Our home was built in 1908 and is located about 35 minutes west of Minneapolis in a small town bedroom community. We’ve lived here for 22 years, constantly working to refresh and beautify the home and surrounding 2 1/2 acres. There’s a huge state park around the corner with 2700 acres, a lake, campgrounds and trails. We love that we get to live where others vacation:)
I’m a junk picker and have been treasure hunting curbside piles for 25+ years. Most everything you’ll see in these outdoor scenes came from a junk pile. Mr. Fix-it and I refresh, repurpose and revitalize it to decorate our home, indoors and out. We’re space challenged inside, but outside there’s plenty of real estate to be creative and enjoy beautiful summer days.
Hopefully these many pictures will give you a good sense of the space, so you feel like you’ve gotten a real tour! Our driveway wraps around the house, where you can usually find us-me, reviving a piece of old furniture and he, tweaking one of his 5 Toro tractors;) Once in a while one of our big kiddos will be working out in the garage, or building something for themselves; they were raised in the garage.
The Porch and Surrounding Garden
The wraparound porch is in the back of our house and is the main way to enter our home. It’s surrounded by gardens, filled with perennials and yard art. There are many seating options, so we can enjoy the beautiful view and entertain friends and family.
The porch steps are filled with a collection of flowers and foliage in different pots with animal figures mixed in. Solar lights cast shadows at night and light the steps. We’re in MN, so my annuals are just getting started. I’m honestly still planting container pots here and there; I don’t usually stop till it’s melting hot in July;)
After last year’s summer of preparing for the epic wedding of our daughter {“A Garden Party Wedding with Vintage Style”, and “Garden Party Wedding: Prep and DIY Projects”}, I told myself to just go easy this summer! But it’s so hard for me to be simple when it comes to flowers and gardening:( I did plant succulents for the tables, thinking I could water less. But we’ve had constant gloomy, rainy days for weeks! And I just seem to keep shopping for flowers;)
The Deck
The deck is our favorite place to hang out in the summer. A big cabinet displays vintage collections, the table is used for eating and reading. Porch swings, a metal glider, a wicker rocker and many vintage chairs make sure there are many options for seating and enjoying the view of our beautiful yard.
{“Tips for Styling a Stunning Vintage Floral Tin Display”}
Vintage garden tools are tucked here and there as art. Old sprinklers are a current favorite find; love when I can find colored versions.
I bought a couple multi packs of THESE awesome little solar lights this year and popped them into hanging planters and tabletop containers. I love how they cast pretty shadows everywhere at night, and they’re so inexpensive! We plug the party lights on when we’ve got people over, but we unscrewed every other bulb, because they were too bright otherwise.
Find other accessories you see here on my Amazon storefront HERE.
Perennial Gardens
The deck steps down to a paver patio we put in for a grad party years ago. We’re happy it’s finally growing moss, which fits in with our patina-filled life. We can seat larger groups here and can enjoy the view of our perennial-filled side garden.
(I added solar fountains to my bird baths this year. I love hearing the water and seeing movement in the garden. Find them HERE)
One end of this garden is filled with sun-loving perennials: peony, daylily, grasses, echinacea, black eyed susans. The other end is devoted to Mr. Fix-it’s favorite hosta. We’ve counted 1000 hosta in our yard! He loves dividing them and finding new varieties. I’m constantly trying to add flowers and other foliage textures, but hosta are consistently beautiful in our shady yard. Yes, we both love gardening!
The Ravine and Woods
Our property is bordered by a deep ravine along one side, and we have woods in the back. When it rains hard, there’s a babbling brook, but most of the time it’s just a trickle. Our kids loved playing down there when they were little.
Because of the wild, we have plenty of nature that visits. We love listening to the different kinds of birds on the Merlin app on our phones. We’ve got a flock of turkeys that come through regularly, along with raccoons, fox, bunnies, deer, owls, and the occasional coyote. Our neighbors have chickens and there are horses across the street. Yes, it’s basically the country;)
A cardinal nest outside the kitchen window entertained us a few weeks ago. We think 2 of the babies made it? But with a lot of predators, you never know.
The Junk Filled Veggie Garden
Last, but definitely not least is our junk-filled veggie garden. Years ago…when we were home a lot;)…we built a picket fence cottage garden on two sides of our screened porch. We filled it with raised Vego beds (you can find them HERE). I love having the veggies in raised beds instead of in the ground; so much easier to keep under control.
I love using as much of my rusty junk finds in here as possible. They’re perfect for veggies to climb up and add visual structure to the space.
This year’s garden has loved all the rain! I planted gladiolas down the middle of the Vegos, and nasturtiums around some of the edges; love the intermingling of plants and flowers.
Tomato plants and asparagus fill the back area. The antique barn cupola is from a relatives barn.
The screen porch is my junk storage-projects waiting to get revived and off season outdoor decor (skis, sleds, blow molds, ladders, etc). Yes, I know many of you would like to peek inside;) I’m hoping one of these years we can give this building a makeover. It needs to be as cute as my garden, and I have so many things I’d like to use to transform it! We’ll see if I can convince Mr. Fix-it and the boys.
Here’s a pic of the garden when it’s surrounded by pretty cutting flowers at the end of the summer; it’s my happy place.
Yep, being outside in our big yard is how we enjoy summers around here. Gardening, working on projects in the driveway, picking flowers and making arrangements for the house; we’re homebodies!
Hope you enjoyed this extensive tour of our home, yard, and garden! I can’t wait to enjoy the rest of the tours today. Visit Missy’s front porch at Sonata Home Design next; she’s got great style!

Sharing at these lovely parties:
I love the solar fountains. And what a great idea to use an old wire bed spring for a trellis. I think I have one in my garage I could put to use myself.
Lucky you! Yes, I love using old bed springs indoors and out:)
Lora, thank you so much for sharing your garden, yard and property. I don’t think I would ever want to leave either!
Glad you enjoyed it, Jan!
Lora, your outdoor spaces are so charming and inviting…I want to keep exploring all of the fun vintage details! I love the hutch styled with so many lovely treasures. And I’m so jealous of your ravine and wooded area. (Those little birds!) Thank you for the wonderful tour! Pinned!
We love the wildness, Missy:) So glad you enjoyed the tour!
Lora,
Your porches are gardens are so dreamy! What a joy to live that close to a state park! We’d be hiking all the time. I am always in awe of your collections and how you style them. These spaces are just so warm and welcoming. I’m pretty smitten with your peony cages. Mine are not cutting it. Our peonies bloom here from late April to the first part of May. It’s such a short season for them.
Thanks, Christy; so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, the peony cages are upcycled from old cemetery fencing. We’ve been making them for years. They’re a great way of keeping the blooms up, and are beautiful yard art when the flowers are done.
I love staying at home too and have several projects on a list. Your property and porches are just beautiful. I would love to live out in the country like you do the views are just breathe taking. I could have spent a lot of time seeing everything but, guess I need to get to work and quite dreaming, lol!
Glad you enjoyed it, Marlene! Yes, dreaming and doing-always a fine balance:)
Lora, where do I even begin? Your outdoor spaces are overflowing with beautiful treasures! I absolutely adore the garden tool stakes—and that blue hutch on the patio? Simply stunning. It was such a joy to tour with you today. I’m always so inspired by your creative touches. And by the way—the chippier, the better!
Thanks, Wendy! Yes, truly enjoyed touring with you, too; love your creativity:)
I’m a homebody too and would love to come sit with you in your vacation-type surroundings! Love the garden tools everywhere and should start doing that. Might help take away from the chippy everything at the farmhouse. I was glad to read I wasn’t the only person on the tour horrified at the chippiness. Most of the time I don’t mind but when a piece of sharp (probably lead-filled) paint gets stuck in my hand like a needle, I do! Really enjoyed your tour. I saw spaces I hadn’t seen before. Now I have porch goals! And wide front steps so I can add a table with chairs goals too. 🙂 pinned
So glad you enjoyed it, Cindy! I remember our friend, Paula, always enjoyed being able to envision the whole space; I think of her when I’m doing a tour<3
I always love to visit your porch, but it’s a huge bonus to tour the surrounding woods and garden areas too. This looks like a little slice of heaven to me! On a side note, I also get a big kick out of your ingenious ways of displaying and utilizing your garden tools!
So glad you enjoyed it, Michelle! We do love our outdoor spaces, and so do our big kids. So think we’ll be here till heaven;)
Lora I just have to take a moment to say that I love every inch of your yard and all the chippy items. You and your family have done a terrific job of decorating and using old old items to display. I looked at every aspect several times.
Great job and so creative. Thank you so much for sharing. This has definitely made my day..
So glad you enjoyed it, Cathy! It’s definitely a personal reflection of our love of patina and nature:)
Lora, it’s always a pleasure to tour your home with all its vintage goodness! How wonderful to have such convenient access to a state park. Your garden spaces are simply charming and I love your sentiment about embracing the potential that others have given up on. Pinned! Blessings, Cecilia @ My Thrift Store Addiction
So glad you enjoyed it, Cecilia; thank you!
SUCH a fun tour of your pretty property!! That ravine and all the woods is so neat…what a blessing to have all that nature!
It is a blessing, indeed:) So glad you enjoyed the tour, Rachel!
Love it Lora ,reminds me a bit of my grandmothers old house .
