Vintage Paint By Number Art, Revived
One of my dear readers sent me a pair of duck paint by numbers as a gift. She threw out a challenge to see what I’d do with them (thanks, Roxie;) Whoever painted them might have had a shaky hand or bad eyesight, because they looked a little like a Monet painting…a little fuzzy.
I loved the colors, but hoped to revive them a little.
To give them more definition I outlined the main features with a fine black sharpie. It definitely made everything pop, but almost a little too much contrast.
Next I antiqued them with an old favorite, Old English scratch cover (you can find it HERE). Traditionally people use it to cover scratches on furniture, but it works great to give old art an antique vibe.
Simply squirt some on an old rag and rub it over the surface. You can make it as dark or subtle as you like. It’s oily, so let it dry for a bit.
Once I’d antiqued the paint by numbers, I was ready to create a vignette around them!

Fall Decor with Vintage Thrifted Finds
Last year I decorated our mantel with a hunting theme. It’s a great look for Fall and a fun way to incorporate vintage finds {see “Rustic Fall Mantel Decor with Vintage Hunting Theme Style“}. This year the hunting theme is in a different spot and focuses on ducks and geese, inspired by the paint by numbers.
First I hung the paint by numbers with simple clips and twine from my lockers. I added an old metal tray with duck images, too. (find similar clips HERE)
At first, I hung THIS wreath to add pretty Fall foliage color to the scene. But it seemed a little dark. Whenever I’m styling, I’m constantly changing things to get the look right.
Instead, I laid the colorful wreath at the mouth of an old wooden bucket and filled it with birch branches for vertical interest. Using a wreath horizontally is a great way to get a different look.
Decorating with Thrifted Collections
Decorating with several collections together is always a win. Recently I picked up a small black globe and a cute wooden duck while thrifting. The globe collections earthy colors coordinated perfectly with the paint by numbers. And I loved the pops of black along with the soft maize gold colors for Fall.
The top of tall furniture pieces is a great spot to feature large accessory collections (especially when you’re space challenged). I styled the globes on top of the lockers, varying their heights with books and vintage metal picnic baskets.
Thrifted duck decoys are tucked here and there with Fall foliage for texture. Battery powered candles add nighttime ambiance.
See “7 Ideas for Decorating the Tops of Armoires, Bookcases (and any tall furniture)” for more.
Styling a Vintage Vignette
To fill out the duck hunting themed vignette, I set an old wooden shipping crate in front with a vintage chair beside. For a shadow box look I set a cute child’s chair inside as a shelf. More duck and goose decoys are set around with faux grasses and leaves.
I am loving adding THESE cordless lamps anywhere and everywhere to add a bit of light without needing a plug. With a simple touch they come on with three different light options. They come in a wide variety of finishes. I always get them in pairs for lots of decor flexibility.
Vintage Fall Duck Hunting Themed Vignette
And that’s how a couple of simple duck paint by numbers inspired a whole vignette! Thrifted finds create collections. Group a couple collections together for impact. And then add seasonal foliage for a pretty display!
Hope you enjoyed seeing the decor process from reviving a couple of thrifted finds to a whole seasonal vignette. Decorating with a hunting theme in the Fall can guide your thrifting adventures when you’re out looking for decor accessories.

Sharing at these lovely parties:
So many great details here Lora. The duck theme is fabulous & love how you gave the art a new lease on life. Your globe collection is amazing. All lovely as always. XO- MJ
Thanks, MaryJo! It’s been fun to enjoy during the season:)
Your art is beautiful as always, Lora! I love how you incorporated your work into your fall decor! So glad we could do this together!
My first thought was Ducks!? But you can make anything so pleasing to the eye. Thanks, I truly thought that was a pretty scene.
LOVE your duck hunting theme. Perfect time of year. Those lockers are so wonderful and are a great background for all your vintage elements! pinned!
Lora, I love your ducks, and those paintings are fabulous. The little lights that light the way in your vignettes are so charming, too. So much inspiration!
Lord have mercy! I can’t believe my giant face is posted for all to see my frizzy bad hair day and flaws. Scrolling up made me jump then realized I need to get fake eyelashes. 😉 LOL.
I wish I had a friend that would send me something super cool like those duck PBN’s. I would have never thought to outline or even revive them. They look fantastic and your fall vignette looks amazing all put together with the deeper colors and globes, etc.
Seriously stunning. pinned
Wow Lora! You met the challenge and made these rather messed up PBN’s into little masterpieces. Who knew that a sharpie and Old English could work such magic. They look so good against your green lockers and next to that wonderful duck tray. Thanks for the lesson in performing an “art – uplift”.
I love your entire creative vignette, the little chair inside the crate is so cute!
The ducks have found their perfect HOME.
Yep, the PBN’s just had a little “work” done to get prettier;) Love bringing out the fowl this time of year; they’re in good company! Thanks!
Adorable, Lora!! All your little ducks are so cute…that little wooden one in the front makes me happy 🙂 What a way to revive those old paintings! Hope you are enjoying the season 🙂
Lora
Wow those PBN prints are so fun. I love how you spruced them up and created this amazing vignette. Great post.
Great use for that Old English! It’s been around for a long time and is as good as ever! Great makeover Lora!
