Rustic Fall Mantel Decor with Vintage Hunting Theme Style
Have you ever wondered “How should I decorate my mantel for Fall?” These cozy, rustic Fall mantel decorating ideas will give your home a cabin or lodge-like vibe, using a duck hunting theme.
Every Fall I try to come up with a new style for my mantel. It’s a fun decorating challenge to style a look I haven’t done before. Often I’m motivated to decorate with newly thrifted vintage finds I’ve found over the spring and summer. This year’s Fall mantel incorporated many “new” accessories, along with plenty of natural foliage. Hope you’re inspired by this Rustic Fall Mantel Decor with Vintage Hunting Theme Style!

Vintage Hunting Theme Paint by Numbers
Years ago I found this trio of vintage paint by number hunting dogs framed paintings in a curbside pile. Yes, they were quite the score! They decorated my dog-lover son’s room for years until he grew out of the look and switched to guitars;) I haven’t used them around my house for awhile and thought they’d make a fun early Fall mantlescape.

Through the years, I’ve collected quite a few old duck and goose decoys and always enjoy pulling them out in the Fall. Animals add a touch of nature to decor styling that I love. I still had a dog figurine from my son’s dog-themed room, too. Fun to be able to use him again.

Thrifted Vintage Stoneware with Fall Colors
Last Spring a thrifting stop uncovered a nice stash of handmade stoneware jugs and vintage crocks. Stoneware is such a flexible collection to use in your decorating in many seasons. I already had a few tall skinny clay vessels (used for ink and whiskey) and a few brown glazed pottery pieces. The dog’s brown-hued coloration inspired me to pull out all the stoneware and style it on the mantel in different ways.
Recent Thrifted Vintage Finds
“New” to me thrifted vintage finds always inspire my seasonal decorating! It’s like getting a new piece of clothing for your wardrobe; so many new possibilities! I did have a good season of vintage finds this year, too, from church sales in the Spring, to estate sales and vintage shops. {see “3 Best Spots to Thrift for Vintage Decor (and my recent finds)” } I scrubbed them up and revived them; now it’s time to decorate with them!
An old metal black lamp was a great deal at a church sale; just needed a little tightening up. If you have enough space for a lamp on your mantel, it adds so much ambiance in the darker seasons.
A large aqua painted bucket was an estate sale score. Had to clean the wasp nest out of it, but now it adds the perfect color blue hue to the mantelscape. This is a great piece for tall sticks and looks great with a fresh mum plant for Fall.
This galvanized metal wire cage was found at an antique store. The check out lady asked what I was going to do with it. I told her I was planning on using it on the Fall mantel, overflowing with autumn textures. And here it is!
I love tucking THESE battery powered birch tapers into all of my decor. I set them on a timer so they’ll come on all over the house when it gets dark; so cozy! And never underestimate the power of a handful of feathers for great texture. (Get them HERE)
Rustic Natural Foliage, Everywhere
Fall is the season to go overboard on rustic natural foliage in your styling. Forage your yard and the neighborhood for whatever you can snip. Hydrangeas, grasses, seedpods, pinecones, spent flowers, and evergreen trimmings can all dry in place and look beautiful all season long.
Combine fresh foliage with preserved leaves (I love THESE) and other realistic faux Fall foliage for a natural, rustic and full look. (Get more Fall foliage ideas in “35+ Decorative Vase Filler Ideas for Beautiful (& easy) Fall Decor”)
Layer the Textures for Rustic Fall Decor
Add in plenty of different textures when you’re decorating for Fall, too. My stacked collection of vintage suitcases provides plenty of visual interest all year long. I rotate them to highlight different colors seasonally. Vintage patchwork quilts made from men’s wool suits bring a cozy texture along with varied patterns.

Hope you are inspired with this rustic fall mantel decor. You can decorate with a hunting theme without having any deer mounts or sheds;) Using a duck hunting theme focused on grasses, feathers and other early Fall natural elements. Next time you’re thrifting, keep an eye out for other accessories you can work into this look!

Glad you enjoyed it, Anna! Thank you:)
There are so many things about your fall décor endearing to me starting with the fabulous dog art. What a find. Also the little ceramic dog, I’ve been wanting to add ceramics to my dog collecting for years. And the tole lamp, oh my. I had one long ago and but kept the shade and haven’t found a use for it yet. The duck hunt theme is so very clever.
So glad you enjoyed it, Pam! It was a fun theme to style.

I LOVE your Fall mantle – every photo is gorgeous! Thank you for all this autumn inspiration.
I attended a conference for my work a few years ago, with attendees from all over the country. As an icebreaker, the speaker asked everyone that had grown up playing ‘Duck, duck, goose’ to stand up, and almost the entire room stood. Then he asked how many people had played ‘duck, duck, gray duck’ and 6-8 of us stood up. He asked where we were from, and all of us were from Minnesota. 😊
Thanks, Nancy; so glad you enjoyed it! And yes, think the duck duck gray duck is a MN thing;)
You always have the best themes! I sent you a message on IG. 🙂
I think you always have the best themes, friend!
