Looking for a Valentines craft? This vintage inspired thread spool Valentine art is simple and easy. Make it with thrifted finds and give it your own creative style. Here’s how to.
Does anyone else get crafty when another holiday comes rolling around? It’s fun to make something festive and include it in your decor. Today’s craft shows that picking up bits and pieces when you’re thrifting can be a great source when you create. Hope you’re inspired to create when you see this Valentine Thread Spool Art with Vintage Style!
I’m joining my Pinterest Challenge friends today, hosted by Cindy at County Road 407. Each month Cindy chooses a seasonal inspiration pic for a talented group of bloggers to design around. This month we’re getting crafty for Valentines; can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with.
If you’re joining from Thistle Key Lane, I’m sure you enjoyed Michelle’s subtle Valentine’s Day art; I just love everything she does:) I’ll have links to the rest of the inspiration at the end.
Inspiration Pic
This month’s inspiration pic was designed by Liz Priest and can be found HERE. It’s almost a mixed media display of Valentines accessories, layered with many different textures:
design cues I noticed:
- Vintage frame as foundation with curvy details
- Lots of layered textures: lace, twine, burlap, foliage, button, paper, wood
- Colors: red, pink, cream, white, black, green
- Words/letters
Now let’s see what I came up with, using these design cues!

Thrifted Vintage Finds
Whenever I’m out thrifting, I pick up interesting bits and bobs. This type of craft is a perfect opportunity to put them together and craft a fun Valentines art for decor.
Our inspo pic reminded me of an interesting little wood frame thingy I’ve had for awhile, not knowing what to do with. Today is it’s day! It looks like it was handmade, cut out of simple plywood. It must have had some type of art inside. The red paint makes it perfect for Valentines.
I also picked up this great roll of vintage wallpaper years ago. It always makes me think of Valentines day. Always happy to think of a way to use my beloved vintage wallpaper stash!
Old Wood Frame for Valentines Art
I measured the empty space in the middle and cut a piece to fit from the vintage wallpaper. For more interest I ripped the edge. I used modge podge to glue it to the middle of the frame.
To add all those amazing layers like the inspo pic, I added delicate vintage lace tatting around the edge. Someone had to have really good eyes to create this pretty lace.
Upcycling Vintage Thread Spools
Whenever I come across old wooden thread spools, I scoop them up. They are a fun material for upcycling. My Vintage Thread Spool Mini Wreath is one of my most popular projects; it’s even been featured in a magazine.
Lay out the old thread spools in a heart shape. I chose thread colors that were fairly neutral, with a couple of red and coral ones.
Then hot glued each spool onto the wallpaper.
Add Graphic Elements for Vintage Style
A few letters or numbers always add a bit of graphic style. Instead of spelling out a whole word, I just glued on a scrabble letter “X” and “O”. I also added a bingo number 14 for fun.
I tied a twine bow at the top to add that texture from the inspo pic.
Upcycled Thread Spool Art for Valentines
It’s so fun to craft vintage bits and bobs into pretty art that you can use as seasonal decor! It will be fun to pull this out each year and work it into my Valentines decor.
