Thrift Store Finds
Do you ever run into a thrift store real quick and tell yourself you’re just going to see if they have _______? Yea. That’s what I tried to do last week before my real destination of Costco. I was on the hunt for some of this cool, botanical dishware from Portmerion. Do you want to see the Thrift Store Finds I was able to scrounge in about 20 short minutes?
During our Christmas vacation in Alabama, I scored 4 dinner plates and 3 salad plates of the Portmerion set…for $2;) A long ago client I used to decorate for owned this set and I always admired them, but they’re kind of pricey for me to buy new (cuz I’m a cheap junker/thrifter). Now that I’ve acquired a few, I’d like more…isn’t that just the way it goes? I love the botanical vibe and vibrant garden-y colors, outlined in black. They’d be perfect in my kitchen for spring!
Take Advantage of Thrift Store Sale Days
When the thrift stores had 50% off day, I decided I’d swing in and see if I could find any. The crowds were crazy, which makes me not really in the mood, honestly. And I didn’t find any at the first store. I went on to one of my other faves and decided I’d finally drop off the orange beanbag I’d been driving around with for weeks! Then I could tell myself I accomplished something!
The second shop was not nearly as busy (because of no sale), but much more profitable, if you know what I mean;)
Have I mentioned I’m a dish-a-holic? Nothing makes me happier than a few new pieces of vintage dishes or pottery to make my day! And with record-breaking 4 foot snowdrifts to look at out the windows, I’m craving everything green. I think you’ll be able to tell from my purchases;)
A pretty serving dish with a fresh, green flowered branch will be perfect on a plate stand for spring. This Dogwood pattern has always caught my eye, and for $1? It had to come home with me!
Enlist Your Thrifting Friends to Hunt for You
My former biz partner and friend had just shown me her collection of Itasca State Park Ladyslipper dishware she had gotten from her mother. This old Syracuse serving bowl was in beautiful shape; I just had to pick it up for her at this price! When thrifters work together, you can really help each other fill out a collection! I texted my thrifter friends a pic of the Portmerion dishes I want, in case they run across some. More eyes on the secondhand hunt always helps!
Since I’ve been decorating with a brown transferware theme in the kitchen {“Valentine’s Day Decor in the Kitchen”}, I’ve seen what a flexible pattern brown and white plates are. You can add fall colors in the autumn, blues and greens in the spring, even red for Christmas and Valentine’s. I’m kind of on the hunt for brown transferware now, because they’ll meld nicely with my Johnson Brother’s Friendly Village set.
And just in time for some spring forced branches, these 2 cute little vintage vases span the spectrum of greens! Don’t you love their pretty curves? I think they’re just crying out for some grocery store daffodils to lift the spirits! {If you give in to the flower temptation like I do when you grocery shop, read “Get a Big Bang From Your Box Store Bouquet”.
Thrift Stores are Cheap Entertainment!
All these for just $5. Now that’s cheap entertainment! Now I can start adding some spring green around my house! When winter has got you down and you’re looking at 4 foot snowdrifts out your window, a thrift store is a cheap, fun escape! Loving your thrift store finds! I’m so excited about the Lady Slipper bowl. Thrifting is good medicine during this snowy Minnesota winter. Can’t wait for the church sales to begin.
I’m itching for a good estate sale, seriously. And actually J is looking forward to junking with me; he’s got a pickup, you know;) Need to get that bowl to you sometime!
