Thrifting with the Gals
Today’s post is part of our monthly Thrifting with the Gals series, where some friends and I share our love of thrifty finds, and how we use them in our homes. This month we’re happy to have Rachel, from The Antiqued Journey, join us as a guest! Rachel blogs from the Minneapolis, MN area like me; we’ve even met for coffee in real life a couple times:) Rachel loves thrifting and styling her home for the seasons. Thanks for joining us, friend!
Here’s the Thrifting with the Gals team, blogging from Vermont & Maine, North Carolina, Florida, and Minnesota. I’ll have links to all of my friends’ thrifting posts at the end; enjoy them all!

Looking for Summer Decorating Ideas?
When a new season rolls around, do you sometimes wonder where to start? Perusing the thrift store shelves can provide the perfect inspiration. A couple months ago, this cute hand painted blue wooden plate caught my eye. Yes, it seemed a little 80’s to me (it was painted in 1986), but everything good comes back around, right? And hearts, gingham, and blue are back…along with ducks (yes, I remember them, too;)
Use Your Thrifted Find to Guide Your Decorating
When you find a fun piece like this, let it be your guide to styling a vignette, a shelf, or a whole hutch display! For a couple weeks, I made a pile of items I gathered around the house that coordinated with this plate. The theme I was thinking reminded me of a Scandinavian cabin. Of course I used the colors of the plate to guide me, along with the lace edge and the hearts.
I’d found the cutest chocolate covered cherries vintage box at a church sale with a similar design. A Spring curbside pile gave me the star cookie cutters, the crocheted hot pads and a red and white gingham apron. The only thing better than thrifted is free:)
I hit an awesome fabric outlet retailer that I hadn’t been to for years. They had a treasure trove of inexpensive, adorable trims. I’m planning a couple crafts around them, but the eyelet lace needed to happen for this hutch display to coordinate with the blue plate and cherries box. I added it to the hutch shelf with THIS handy stuff. Instant cute!
Add Nostalgic Pieces to Your Decorating
To coordinate with the Scandinavian vibe I was going for, I placed a runner on the bay window that Happy Girl and her hubs gave me from their honeymoon in Door County, MI. The primary colors and Scandinavian design guided the hutch display, too.
Pretty much everything else you see is either from a church sale, a vintage shop, or a curbside pile; that’s how I roll;) Think I need to find a Swedish horse for this look; I’ve got the Norway bottling crate.
Summer Hutch Decor with Thrifted Finds
When styling a large space like this, I start with the bigger pieces and work my way down to fillers at the end. The top of the hutch came first, placing a collage of picnic baskets, and a big black fan. I varied the textures, adding eyelet lace runners here and there. Vintage enamelware pieces with red, black, and blue accents adds to the cabin vibe, as does my growing thermos collection. (see “Cozy Cabin Inspired Table Setting for a Special Birthday” for fun thermos inspo)
Think I need to add some daisies to those thermoses! They’re the perfect summer flower.
When I first picked up the large wooden hatbox, I thought the stenciled edging was dated and was going to paint over it. Now I’m decorating a whole hutch around the Scandinavian style:) When it comes to thrifting and it’s inexpensive-buy first, decide how you’ll use it later, is my advice!
Cabin Style Vintage Finds
The hutch shelves are filled with cabin style vintage finds I’ve thrifted here and there for years.
My mini enamelware teapot collection started in college with a little green one. The cute framed linen was my mom’s, and she had it at our family cabin. Old cheeseboxes add a great graphic punch. I added hinges and old screen handles to update them. (find more ideas in “17 Easy and Fun Ways to Decorate with Wooden Crates”)
Old cigar boxes can be used to add levels when you’re styling. (find more ways to repurpose and refresh them in “DIY Vintage Cigar Box Craft Ideas”) Don’t you love the little sewing notions cubby with painted flowers? Scooped it up at a church sale. It’s usually in my craft room, but knew it worked with this look. Maybe I need to add daisies coming out of one of the little drawers? Yes, I could keep putzing with styling all. day. long.
Patriotic Style to Last All Summer
In past years, the hutch has been much more of a Patriotic vibe-mainly red, white, and blue: “Patriotic Hutch Decor with Vintage Style”. But I wanted to not get sick of it after the 4th this year; make it more all-summer friendly. This look also gives me nostalgic vibes of our former family cabin, that I always miss this time of the year.
The cute apron, the watermelon hot pad and the blue and white calico napkins were all in the epic curbside pile we picked this Spring. I arranged old wooden blocks with their stripes out to make a flag; so easy!
Isn’t it fun to see how one thrifted find can inspire a whole look? Church sale yarn balls scattered here and there were the final filler to pull it all together. I am remembering I have some faux cherries around here, though…
It’s so fun to see happy, summer decor filling the spaces of our home. And surrounding yourself with nostalgic items is always like a big hug, reminding you of old times:)

Sharing at these lovely parties:
That 80’s plate is adorable! Whoever painted it had some talent! Love where you hung it, and the lace edge on the shelf is fabulous. I think I’ll try that at the farmhouse. Love how everything looks and how easy you make it seem when pulling it all together. You have a gift. pinned
Ah, thanks, Cindy! Nice to look at summer decor:)
Your buffet is such a melange of lovely items. I know I occasionly used to drag out old toys and intersperse them in vignettes mostly for my grandgirl. I’m of Scandinavian heritage, and there is something about the Blues that are so compelling. Lovely post and fun collections! Sandi
So glad you enjoyed it, Sandy!
Hi Lora, I’m always happy to find your name in my inbox–I know something fun is coming! Your “Spring curbside piles” really make me jealous, though! I live in southern California, so we may find things on the curb occasionally, but nothing regular like you seem to have. So, count your blessings! I love your ideas. Thanks for sharing!
So glad to hear that, Marilyn:)Thank you! Most of the good curbside neighborhoods are doing every other year now, which is probably good for me; I find so much, I need a year to get caught up with my transformations!
You always have the cutest finds. I just love it.
Thanks, Katie! I’m always treasure hunting:)
Way too much stuff going on there.. you have some pretty pieces there but you need to edit your pretties.
All personal preference, Lorri; each to their own. We’re not minimalists around here. But thanks for sharing your opinion!
Love, love, love that wooden blue plate. Anything Scandinavian has me swooning, now I need to find one of those. Great post Lora!
Thanks, Ann! Yes, love a little Scandinavian touch.

Glad you enjoyed it, Marlene!
I always find inspiration because of you! Thank you! My favorite thing….those old blocks, blue & red design is awesome!
Thanks, Michelle! Yes, when I was just taking down the blocks in their Christmas words (!), I realized they had red and blue stripes on them-perfect for a little flag!
OMG LOVE!!! It’s SO fun to find just one thing that inspires a whole display! I adore all of your layers and pretty vintage things in the hutch for summer. That old cherry box is totally rad! Love sharing with you, friend!
Thanks, Rachel! Yes, so fun to be hopping together for TWTG!
Lora

It’s all ❤️ eyes for that charming plate!! Exactly the painting style I most enjoy doing myself. The curbside finds astound me, who would throw out such treasures? Your display is so summery and your gift for assembling is enviable.
Yes, I love this type of hand painting, too, Pamela. I honestly wondered if one of my readers would recognize it as their own;) So fun to design around a thrifted find.
