Easy DIY Herb Gift Bags
What catches your eye and your senses when you visit the garden store for the first time of the season? This year I was drawn to the fresh herbs! Oh, the wonderful aroma when you rub your fingers over their leaves! I just had to bring a couple home with me! I still had some leftovers from my last couple of projects {“How To: DIY Herbs Bunting” and “Vintage Silverware Art for the Kitchen”] , so I decided to whip up some fun DIY Herb gift bags, perfect for springtime gifting!
First, cut a burlap square to make your bag. My pots were 3-4″, so I cut my square 8″x 8″.
Next, print off my herb printables from my previous post, {“Herbs Bunting”}, or use an illustration you have already. Glue illustration to the top half of your burlap square. Zig-zag stitch around.
Fold over, with the patterned side in. Sew up the side seams.
Sew a diagonal stitch in each corner and cut off the extra. (This is a rustic project…no perfectionism allowed!)
Turn right side out.
Attach rope handle: Cut length of rope, putting knots in either end. Using decorative twine and a large-eyed needle, sew rope onto bag, sewing twine around an inch of the rope. This is an easy way to add a rope handle to any fabric bag!
All done with the gift bag!
Tuck a fresh herb plant inside! You could also add a seed packet. For a little vintage touch, you could also add a stamped silverware herb marker. My friend, Diana at Adirondackgirl@heart just posted a how-to if you need some pointers, Here. This was the first time I’d ever attempted stamping on silverware, and it was fun (although my arm is a little sore;) I stamped the words on the pretty handles, in order to see the vintage design. I also used forks to stick into the dirt:
Diana took a fine sharpie and filled in the letters so they could be read more easily. I may try that and see what I think, but I do like just the classic silver words, showcasing the designs.
I tied a little “Happy May Day” note on these and delivered them to a couple friends on their front door! Have you ever heard of this old tradition? I’ve used cut flowers from my yard before for May Day baskets, but this is the first Herb version. Perfect for my friends to start their herb gardens!
Oh, that Lemon Thyme smells so wonderful!
These easy, little bags would be fun for Mother’s Day gifts or a garden party or bridal shower. Pretty cheap and easy to whip up a bunch!
If you give these DIY Herb gift bags a try, let me know how it goes!
