I chose my milk glass vase collection for this example so you could see the brownish grime down inside. I use this collection all the time along with the rest of my milk glass. If you love milk glass, too, be sure to check out “10 Pretty Ways to Decorate with Vintage Milk Glass” for more ideas.
The Magic Cleaner
First, pick up some denture cleaning tablets. (You can find some HERE) They will provide the fizzy cleaning down in the bottom that you can’t get to. Place hot water in your vases and drop 1/2- 1 tablet in each narrow neck vase or bottle. Let sit for a couple hours at least. You’ll see the bubbling happen.
How to Clean Sediment Off Bottom
My secret weapon is the next step. Get a small bag of fine aquarium gravel (like THIS). The color doesn’t matter. You can often find old bags at the thrift store (for all of us who tried to have fish tanks and failed at it;) Some people use uncooked rice for this step, but I’ve found the small gravel rocks get the sediment off nicely.
Place 1/2 -1 teaspoon inside each vase. You can use a funnel if you need. Gently swirl the rocks around with the water and denture cleaning solution.
How to Clean In the Narrow Necks
At this point, you can either drain out the rocks or leave them in. To get down in the narrow neck of the bottles and vases, use either an old toothbrush or a bottle brush cleaner or both. (THIS set would work perfectly) The bottle brush cleaners that have bristles or sponges around the bottom do work much better than an old toothbrush.
Once the sediment and slime is cleaned out, rinse with hot water and air dry. You can dry the aquarium rocks, too, and use them again next time. I keep mine in a ziplock bag.
If your vases are clear or colored glass and they need more cleaning, check out my tips HERE to soak them so they’re sparkly.
