I have been wanting to make scrap fabric flags for a couple years, and never gotten around to it. This challenge was the perfect reason to kick myself into gear and just do it! I recently shopped at a fabric outlet store I hadn’t been to for years. They had a trove of amazing, cute fabric trims, and I came home with a whole bag to play with. Here’s the how-to, so you can make them, too!
First, Upcycle Old Spindles
I still have a great stash of old chair spindles I keep for upcycled projects. I grabbed the thinner ones and gave them a scrub in the driveway. Once dry, I painted them with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Typewriter black. ( You can shop MMSMP HERE. Use code 10OFFLB for a discount)
Once dry, I shabby sanded them with my palm sander and 100 grit. Then I wiped them with Miss Mustard Seed’s Hemp Oil to seal and rehydrate the wood.

Crafting the DIY Scrap Fabric Flags
I knew I wanted to use some old denim jeans, but I also had a couple other church sale fabrics that were perfect for a fun, summer Patriotic vibe. Strawberries, cherries and stripes paired perfectly with the denim. I also pulled out blue and white graphic quilt squares I picked up at an estate sale. I love other people’s unfinished projects:)
The fabric flags would all be around 5″ or 6″ vertically and 3″ more horizontally. I wanted to wrap the fabric around the spindle, so I added an inch. Flags are usually 2″ wider than they are tall.
For a rustic look, I snipped a bit of the fabric, and then ripped it for a frayed edge. I also used a pinking blade on my rotary cutter to cut other pieces. (find a rotary cutter & mat HERE)
The cutting took awhile! I should have done this a day earlier, so I could have had all my supplies ready to put together.
Supplies Needed
- folded rectangle cut flag fabric
- misc trims
- spindles/dowels/sticks
- tacky glue
- Optional: brass buttons and E6000 glue
Assembling the Scrap Flags
Open the flag fabric up and glue spindle to the middle. Leave 1/2″ at the top. Put more glue on spindle and around the flag perimeter on one side. Fold fabric over and press together to form flag.
Now to decorate them! Cut trims to length and layout your design before gluing with Tacky glue. Get creative! Each one can be different. This is the fun part:)
Optional: Glue a brass button on the top of each. I used hot glue and they were falling off. E6000 would be much better, but it needs to dry overnight. (find it HERE)
Here is the variety I made; they were so much fun!
Styling a Patriotic Centerpiece with the Scrap Fabric Flags
I started with a round woven tray a friend gifted me with. Then I grabbed the Americana vintage children’s books I scored at a church sale. I filled the bottom of the tray with them, so the covers would peek out.
I pulled out a couple of red, white and blue tins from my Patriotic bin. Rachel’s Marshmallow tin is highly collectible. My tins are for confections and candy; similar idea. I also added old soda bottles for their fun graphic punch. The flag spindles fit perfectly in the bottles.
I added the transferware ironstone cups with votive candles, since Rachel had ironstone dishes in her basket. Always love the flicker of a candle…except when the wind keeps blowing them out!
Because this centerpiece is in the middle of the table, it needs to be pretty all the way around. Red, white and yellow faux flowers join real hosta leaves from the yard. I love mixing real and fake for more appeal.
I had so many flags, I styled them in another fun vintage tin along with s’more ingredients. It sits on a colorful vintage patchwork quilt that’s one of my favorites. Red and white stripe pillows with rick rack add coziness, too. (find the cute pillow covers HERE).
It’s always fun to style a picnic by our woods! Did you catch my full yard and garden summer home tour yesterday? Enjoy it HERE.
These flags were so much fun to create! And now I’ll be able to pull them out each year and decorate with them. Definitely give them a try!
