Simple DIY Valentines Decoration with Upcycled Alphabet Blocks
Craft this DIY Valentines Decoration with upcycled alphabet blocks for trash to treasure style. Simple Vintage Valentines decoration craft idea.

On snowy winter days, it’s wonderful to immerse yourself in crafting. This time of year it’s always sweet to dig into my stash of vintage goodies and turn the trash into treasure. Bits and bobs of thrifted vintage were crafted into a cute Valentines centerpiece for my craft room. Hope you’re inspired with this Simple DIY Valentines Decoration with Upcycled Alphabet Blocks.
Today is the first Pinterest Challenge of the new year! Thanks to my friend, Cindy, at County Road 407 for always finding a photo to inspire our creativity. If you’re visiting from BlueSky at Home, I’m sure you enjoyed Carol’s Valentine’s Day Heart Topiary. I’ll have all the rest of the inspiration at the end; enjoy!

Valentine’s Centerpiece Inspiration
Our inspiration photo comes from Southern Home and Hospitality. Kate created pretty faux rosemary topiaries for a subtle Valentine centerpiece. Don’t you love them? Get her how to on the blog post.

Design cues:
- Topiaries-a stick with a Valentine shape on top
- A grouping of them together to make a centerpiece
- Pink flowers and a candle (romance)
- Greenery
My Take:
This pic did inspire me, but I totally took a vintage junk take on this idea. I love the opportunity to upcycle my stash of vintage junk, especially for Valentines. You’ll see the design cues above included, but my crafty DIY project is for the vintage junk lover:)

Materials Needed:
- wooden alphabet blocks spelling LOVE
- thin wooden dowel rod cut into 3 and 4 inch sections
- wood glue
- drill
- hot glue gun
- old cookie cutters/heart shaped doo dads
- ribbon
- buttons
- extra embellishments (like bingo #s)

Valentines Decorations How To
To make the block base more substantial, use two blocks on top of each other for each letter of LOVE. Some of my blocks had red (& blue) lines, so I used them to pair with the letters. Once you have your plan, drill holes for the dowels in the block that will be on the top. The blocks I used were from three different sets of vintage wooden blocks, so different sizes.

Glue two stacked blocks together with wood glue. Then glue thin dowel sections into each. Vary the heights to coordinate with what you’re putting on the top of each. Lay them out to make sure it all looks good.

Heat up your hot melt glue gun next. Glue a button on the top of each dowel piece. This gives you more surface area to attach the cookie cutters, etc.
This was my plan:

Hot glue vintage cookie cutters and heart shapes to the button tops. If gluing them straight is a challenge, you could also glue them slanted.

Valentines Centerpiece for the Craft Room
These cuties are perfect to style a little Valentine centerpiece in my craft room studio/office. I also brought out my Pinterest Challenge from last year, Valentine Thread Spool Art. A yardstick ruler shelf had hearts on the side and said Heartland, so I filled it with pink and red thread spools. And of course I had to add a heart leaf shaped plant, a candle and some pink flowers like our inspo pic.

These Pinterest Challenges always inspire me to be creative! Do you love them, too?

Lora,
You have such a way with vintage decor. The little block topiaries are precious. The thread spool heart really stole my heart!
So many great ideas, Lora! Saw your feature at Beth’s party… congrats! I would love to have you join TTA each week. Always love having you when you drop in! ❤
I will pop over, Julie! Thanks for the invite:)
Lora,
Love the direction you took this month’s Pinterest Challenge. So cute!
What a cute crafty idea, Lora. Using your vintage stash items paid off in a sweet little display for Valentine’s Day.
So fun to be creative when it’s cold and snowy outside:)
ADORABLE! You always have the cutest craft makings. I don’t know where you keep it all. One of the most charming ways to decorate for Valentine’s Day. Love the spool heart too! so clever. pinned
If Mr Fix it would get the sheetrock done from replacing windows so I can paint, I’d be able to do a craft room/studio/office tour! That’s the goal!
Love this upcycled alphabet block Valentine décor, Lora! It is creative, inspiring, and full of charm!
Thanks, Lynne; appreciate your kind words!
These are so cute, so creative. Don’t know how you keep doing so many cute things, guess God gave you a very creative mind. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Marlene! As long as the ideas keep coming, I’ll keep sharing:)
What a creative way to interpret the challenge! Loving the vintage goodness of your alphabet block topiaries!!
It’s just what kept coming up in my mind! Thanks, Cindy:)
Lora
How clever! You have so many great vintage pieces. Great post.
I love finding the junk, so I better make time to actually create with all the stuff, too;) Thanks, Rachel!
Lora, your alphabet blocks with heart cookie cutters are ADORABLE!!! I have two of those cutters, btw. The old 1940’s/1950s (maybe from the 1960s??) one with the red wood handle? I have it with a green handle. My kids loved to use them when they were little. We would cut out cookies, and scones with the taller, all-metal heart cutters. Really fun project! Pinned a bunch, like always. 😉
Enjoy your sweet Valentine’s topiaries! Love them with the other creations there in your craft room. <3
Warm hugs,
Barb 🙂
Thanks for pinning, Barb! Yes, I have a green handled one, too. They’re perfect for little toddler fingers:)
Adorable, Lora! Love the use of old blocks and cute kitschy finds.
This craft is FABULOUS! I love all of these wonderful vintage elements. It is so cute and inspiring.
Thank you, Laura; I appreciate your sweet words:)
I have vintage cheese boxes that would also work well instead of the ruler/yardsticks. Thanks
Yes, those would totally work, too, Michelle! I wanted to use this one, because it’s got hearts on the sides and the word Heartland;)
