DIY Valentine Bunting
Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that doesn’t need to be overdone. But it can be fun to add some simple, easy touches to your home to celebrate love. Today I’m going to show you how to make some easy DIY Valentine Bunting for Valentine’s Day decor, which you could also vary for any season.
This project is part of a monthly Pinterest Challenge, organized by Cindy at County Road 407. Each month Cindy picks out an inspirational pic for a talented bunch of bloggers to design around. If you’re stopping over from A Heart Filled Home, I’m sure you saw how easy Leslea’s Valentine’s Day garland was with a Cricut machine (#Iwantone). I’ll have links to all the rest of the blogs down below. Hope you can visit them all!
Today’s photo is provided by Refreshed Living. Jenny created a simple, farmhouse-style bunting with a touch of Valentine:
If you check out Refresh Living’s blog HERE, you’ll see right off that Jenny shares my love of vintage junk and repurposing. I know I’m going to be perusing her site for a deeper look!
Whenever we do these Pinterest challenges, I like to first take note of all the elements in the inspiration pic that stick out to me. Then we can take it from there and make it our own! Here’s what my eye is noticing:
My version of bunting is definitely different, but still holds the quiet nod to Valentine’s that Jenny’s does. I hope you’ll see it’s easy to make and can be used for any season, not just Vday. I first made this classic bunting and hung it from a mirror harp in my daughter’s “Vintage Modern Bedroom Makeover”. I’ve never shared the how-to; this is it, with a Valentine’s Day touch.

Materials Needed: (click on links for more info)
- 6″ roll of burlap ribbon, non-wired (HERE it is in green)
- thinner yarn (I used pink)
- twine ( I used cream)
- basic sewing machine or fabric glue
- large-eyed needle
- ruler, scissors
To begin, Cut Ribbon in Sections
Cut the 6″ burlap ribbon into 8″ sections. If you have patterned ribbon, cut in the same place every time if you want the bunting sections to match. I chose for my cut line to be in the middle of the dark gray squares.
Cut Pieces with Diagonals
Fold each bunting piece in 1/2 top to bottom. Fold down crease. Fold from side to side and make small cut in the middle bottom. Cut a gradual angle from outside corner to inside fold. Open and make sure you like the angle. If you have a checked ribbon, it will be easier to follow the pattern. Cut the rest the same.
Add Heart Embroidery
Pencil draw a heart somewhere on bunting piece. They don’t all have to have hearts; just a few is enough. Thread a large eye needle with pink yarn. Knot the end and stitch a satin stitch to fill in the heart space. It’s just up and down…no fancy stitches here. When you’re done, go through stitches on the back and cut off.
Attach Bunting Pieces to Twine
Once you have all the heart embroidery accents done, you can assemble the Valentine bunting. Fold each bunting piece over a length of twine. Pin closed. Either sew or use fabric glue around the edges. Leave 1/4″ at top so pieces can slide on twine. Then you could swap out pieces for the seasons ( a green shamrock would be pretty cute, too).
Decorate with your DIY Valentine Bunting!
To coordinate with our inspiration pic, I hung the new bunting from one of my favorite kitchen cupboard pieces {“Kitchen Cupboard with Antique Doors”}. Just like Refreshed Living’s, it has classic vintage style with some junky hardware for bling.
My version is definitely different, but carries through some of the same ideas, don’t you think? The roll of burlap ribbon really makes this DIY bunting project an easy one. You could make this for any season or everyday decor in your home. You could glue on chipboard letters if you wanted to incorporate words, too. So many possibilities!

January Pinterest Challenge: Bunting
I am envious of your nice, even satin stitches. I HATE doing the satin stitch caz I am lousy at it although I could do French knots and lazy daisies all day long! I got my Valentine craft supplies/stash out today and my secret pal at church is gonna get a nice bag of stuff (I buy after the holiday for the next year). So far I have literally SHOVED an empty Valentine candy box into the center of a “cherry” vine wreathe inside my tobacco basket! Last year was the first time I started making buntings/garlands and have had so much fun doing different ones. Although I like using hot glue, the pink stitching is much prettier!
Yes, the satin stitch is definitely tricky to get them all lined up! I prefer the other stitches, too:)
Lora, what a cute idea to use burlap ribbon to make your bunting. I love the little heart embellishment. It looks very nice on your kitchen cabinet.
Thanks, Carol!
I loved your little bunting garland the moment I saw it, Lora! It has such a sweet vibe with the embroidered hearts, and I’ve had embroidery on the mind since shopping for this challenge. (I had a pair of jeans with embroidery I used to pull off the clothesline when I was a little girl. I didn’t have the patience to let them dry.) Now I plan to dive into it! Pinned!
Yay, I’m so excited I inspired you to embroider, Crissy! I learned as a kid from my Grandma and really want to spend more time doing it. It’s so fun to add a little embellishment here and there! (Like we had on our jeans back in the day;)
Hi Lora! I love your checked bunting idea!! Really fun idea and I love the little hearts you created… You’re right this idea could be used in so many ways. I love the idea of bunting hanging swagged around a room or outdoors even (Downton Abbey images come to mind). Happy to be on this challenge with you. <3
Hearty hugs,
Barb 🙂
Yes, bunting just adds a bit of fun and celebration anywhere, doesn’t it? Why wait for a party:)
Lora,
This garland is perfection! Love the fabric you chose and the random use of hearts is a nice touch. I would be using the fabric glue method since I didn’t listen to my mom and learn to sew.
Cindy
There are so many who never got the opportunity to learn to sew, Cindy. That’s why I wanted to make sure this one would work with glue!
This is such a sweet bunting, i love it, you always come up with something so imaginative.
Aw, thanks, Marlene:)
When I saw your finished Valentine bunting, I actually said out loud, “Awwww”. Love the idea, and the colors… and the everything! Pinned! Love hopping with you!
Thanks so much, Julie! And thanks for pinning:) I love hopping with this group; such a great bunch of talented, sweet ladies!
Hi lora, oh my gosh Lora this bunting looks amazing! The detail of the hearts! So pretty! I have to step up my game! laura
You’re too funny, Laura:) I was thinking the same thing when I saw you doing IGTV! Video…argh…maybe in 2020? #goals!
Adorable. I love the pink and buffalo check together. So fun.
I’m loving the pink and gray combo this year, Katie!
Lora, you always know how to make me smile. And usually make me want to live close to you so your creativity would rub off on me. This garland is so sweet. I want it! It looks perfect hanging on your cabinet. Thank you for joining in. Pinned!
Right back at ya, girl! Thanks for inspiring the Valentine decor! I probably would have skipped it this year otherwise;)
Oh my heart is happy! Your garland is just too cute and clever.
You’re too sweet, Laura:) Thanks!
What a pretty color combo. Love the gray and pink. This little flag garland is so easy and fun to make and can be used for all seasons. Love it Lora!
I’m kinda loving the subtle Valentine look of gray and pink this year, Terrie. Think I got a little over the red at Christmas! Yes, this DIY bunting is so easy to make and fun to decorate with!
I love your version, Lora! The buffalo check burlap ribbon looks great embellished with hearts that you embroidered using yarn. The garland looks fabulous on your cabinet! Great project.
Thanks, Paula! Buffalo check is so in right now, but this bunting brings a new vibe to it.
