Create a Vintage Farmhouse-Style Christmas Hot Chocolate Bar
The weather is putting on it’s winter coat, so it’s time to make sure you’re warm on the inside as well as the out! It’s Hot Chocolate Bar season, which brings out the sweet creative in all of us! Today I’m going to share how to Create a Vintage Farmhouse-Style Hot Chocolate Bar so you can have all the ingredients ready when your family and friends need a winter warm up!
Today’s Ideas are part of our monthly Pinterest Challenge, where a group of talented bloggers all create from one picture. Thanks to Cindy at County Road 407 for organizing and hosting! If you’re visiting from Sweet Pea, welcome! I’m sure you enjoyed Paula’s vintage finds; she and I are vintage-lovers to the core! I’ll have links to all the rest of the inspiration at the end.
Today’s Inspirational Hot Chocolate Bar pic comes from Jessica at Pen + Paper flowers. She’s put together a lovely display. Let’s take a look, so we can create our own version!
Here’s what popped out to me when recreating my version:
Since Christmas is fast approaching, I decided to add a Vintage, Farmhouse-Style Christmas twist to my Hot Chocolate Bar. I’ll share what you can round up to create one yourself. Just in time for a warm-up after you cut down that Christmas tree!

Create a Chalkboard Backdrop for your Hot Chocolate Bar
First, decide on your chalkboard backdrop. To add vintage style, I gave an old dresser mirror a refresh. The mirror was replaced with a chalkboard painted board and the frame was painted with Farmhouse White milk paint (you can get it HERE).
To give the chalkboard a little bit of a tree pattern, I stenciled some of the Large Buffalo Check from Funky Junk’s Old Sign Stencils line. I used a pearly white and a metallic green acrylic paint and angled the stencil. (You can get the Large Buffalo check stencil HERE). I think it was a fun change to use this stencil in a different direction, and it added just the right amount of extra to the chalkboard.
OLD SIGN STENCILS PROVIDED ME WITH COMPLIMENTARY STENCILS FOR THIS PROJECT. ALL OPINIONS ABOUT THEIR PRODUCTS ARE MY OWN. NOTE: THEIR PRICES ARE IN CANADIAN CURRENCY; SEE THEIR CONVERSION LINK TO ADJUST.
Gather Vintage Farmhouse-Style Accessories
The accessory pieces are what will give this scene it’s Vintage Farmhouse-Style vibe. Here’s what I found around my house and on a couple vintage shopping trips {“Latest Vintage Finds and How to Refresh Them“}. If you’ve got any of these pieces, add them into your Hot Chocolate Bar:
- vintage wood boxes with old graphics (cheese boxes and anything made out of an old yardstick)
- restaurant-ware heavy vintage cups with pretty designs
- milk bottles with old graphics
- glass jars in various shapes and sizes
- vintage candy and confections metal tins
- galvanized metal
- tarnished silver
Fill the Vintage Containers with Christmas Treats and Hot Chocolate Toppings
Biscotti is wonderful for dunking and these white chocolate, candy cane covered pretzels are my absolute favorite (you can get them HERE). Fill everything you can with different sized candy canes. I’ve got the regular small ones, and the old fashioned softer stick kind too.
To add extra yummy to the Hot chocolate fill several small jars with sprinkles and chips. Then have some drizzle ready. Caramel and fudge drizzle are good, but this Cookies and Cream drizzle? Yikes…keep it away from me; I could drink it alone! And of course, have plenty of whipped cream and marshmallows, too!
Add Christmas Texture and Ambiance
A lighted mini tree in a galvanized container gives Christmas texture to the scene. And of course a flickering candle adds that special touch. The green in both fill out the scene and balance the red and white stripe candy canes.
The log slice adds a nice organic, rustic texture and adds another layer. You could add freshly cut evergreens around the bottom of the scene for softness and fragrance, too.
What a fun scene to bring together! And I’m sure it all tastes as good as it looks! If you want easy, go for instant hot chocolate packets. But if you want really good, make it on the stovetop with real cocoa and whole milk; yum! Then add all the extras!

November Pinterest Challenge: Hot Chocolate Bar
Sharing at these lovely parties:
I love your hot chocolate bar with the adorable chalk art. I’m a sucker for chalk art. I like that your bar doesn’t scream Christmas so you could use it all winter long!
Thanks, Christy! Hot chocolate bars are so fun to decorate, aren’t they?
Lora, love your vintage boxes and of course your hot chocolate bar sign. Your mugs are really unique. You’ve set up a sweet place to enjoy the warmth of a cup of cocoa. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks, Carol!
Lora, I love all the vintage touches you share here in your hot cocoa bar!!! The mugs step right out of when I was little and the cheese boxes are neat! My dad had one he repurposed into a shoeshine kit; I think my second brother has it now. Very fun recreation, yours!!!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family,
Barb 🙂
Thanks, Barb! I’ve slowly been picking up these old restaurant-ware pieces for a fun mish-mosh of vintage tableware. I love all the patterns!
I love your hot coca bar!!
Tania
Thanks, Tania! It was super fun to create it all!
Such a darling display Lora! I adore all the creative elements. May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanks, Laura! You, too!
Lora, I LOVE the way your chalkboard sign turned out! The pattern is so perfect with those stencils. And candy cane covered pretzels?! Whaaaaat? I included my favorite yogurt covered pretzels in my bar, and I thought those were yummy but yours sound even better. I always love your cool vintage vibe…that ruler container is so charming. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks, Crissy! Yes, those Christmas pretzels are killer. Luckily just 1 satisfies my sweet tooth:)
You did a great job creating your own hot cocoa bar that is reminiscent of Jessica’s! Love your little tray for the treats, Lora… and your tree looks great, too! Pinned!
Thanks, Julie! Just picked up a couple of these cute old trays made from rulers. Trying to come up with unusual ways to use them!
Girlfriend, you are so clever! I specifically did not add syrups or whipped cream to my set up because the containers didn’t “match”. LOL! I’m so excited to see how you covered yours. I must copy that! Love all of your vintage goodies. Especially the little crate for your pretzels and mini candy canes. Love it all! Thanks so much for joining in each month. You are the best. Happy Thanksgiving!
I love your hops, Cindy, and love being included! This was a fun one to put together; I just love using vintage containers for serveware!
I love, love your version of this challenge. My vintage loving heart adores all of the vintage pieces that you used in this display. My dad was in the dairy business and I have bunches of milk bottles. I love how you put your candy cane sticks in the milk bottle. Your chalkboard made from an old mirror looks great and you are going to enjoy using it for decorating in any season. I always enjoy visiting here with you!
Thank you, Paula. We both just love the character and sentimental touch of our vintage, don’t we? It’s so fun to use and enjoy it in a different way!
Lora you gave us all great inspiration. I love how you made your sign and all the details you placed in your space. It is a beautiful set up. Enjoy your Thanksgiving my friend.
Thanks, Terrie!
wow, this is almost identical to the setup of the Challenge picture. You really did capture the image perfectly. Love your added treats to the display. I love it all. What a fabulous Hot Chocolate Bar.
You’re right, Marty, this one came off pretty similar! Doesn’t always happen that way, but I did love how she put hers together. Thanks!
HI Lora! I love your vintage spin! I have similar pretzels I found at Sprouts! Visiting from Everyday Edits, laura in Colorado! Blizzard in Denver to kick off the hot cocoa challenge! laura
