Why Collect Vintage Platters?
Vintage platters can be found inexpensively when you’re thrifting. They’re larger than a simple plate, and can have a bigger impact when you’re decorating. They can be found in any color scheme and endless design styles, which make them the perfect seasonal decor accent to have on hand. And they don’t take up much space to store away. Simply stack them in a cupboard, so they’re handy when you need them.
I normally gravitate towards color and pattern when I’m decorating. But lately, I’ve realized the value of white platters. Placed in the back of my hutch, they allow anything and everything in front of them to pop. I can also use them in any season, and they look great in a stack out in the open. Yep…I’ve started a new collection-white ironstone platters; is it any surprise?
Seasonal Decor Mainstay
Vintage platters are a mainstay of my seasonal decor. I have a variety to use for each season. I realized I was a little short of Fall colored designs. I love to tuck them into displays with my Fall colored vintage pottery collection. Recently I picked up a couple ovals with pretty flowers. Often I find these at church sales for a couple bucks. I don’t care if they have small chips/crazing; character is beauty!
Many Ways to Decorate with Vintage Platters
There are so many ways to decorate with vintage platters. Here are some of the ways I decorate with them:
- In the back of a display as a bright/seasonal backdrop
- As a seasonal feature on a plate stand
- As a base for a centerpiece
- Stacked
- Hung on a wall with a plate hanger and/or grouped
- As a seasonal theme starter to launch a display
- Tape seasonal trims to them.
This bookshelf we built into our upstairs hallway has plate grooves on each shelf. Seasonally colored and designed platters were placed first as a feature, and other accessories added around after.
Large plain platters are a great canvas to create a seasonal centerpiece. Perfect for a coffee table, entry table or dining table.
Plate stands, large and small, give you the ability to place a platter anywhere. I’ve even stood one inside a bird cage to create a pretty vignette. Definitely have a stash of different types of plate stands on hand for all the decorating possibilities. (find a variety of plate stands HERE)
Display Vintage Platter Collections Grouped
I’ve been collecting pastel colored and flowered oval platters for awhile. I love to display them for Easter, often standing them on end like eggs. Sometimes they are the back drop of my Spring hutch, sometimes I hang them with plate hangers in a grouping. One year I taped vintage trims to them so they looked like decorated eggs.

My red and white toile platters can be used for all the red holidays: Christmas, Valentine’s, Patriotic. Add different colors to switch up the look for the season.
Another easy way to feature seasonal platters is to hang them in a simple plate rack. Add seasonal foliage for even more interest. See “7 Simple Plate Rack Decor Ideas for Thrifty Style” for more plate rack decor ideas.

Isn’t it fun to be able to say or type – Decorating with Vintage Dishes?! I love it and love every one of your pieces! I have had to pass up so many adorable plates due to the lack of space to store them. I’d give up my pantry of food if I could and store them there! Gah, so many cute ideas. pinned
I’m always shuffling them around from place to place. But store a lot of them in furniture cupboards when off season. You just need to buy a couple more pieces of furniture;) Fun subject; thanks for picking it!
