Create a Collection That’s Meaningful to You
Sometimes it’s just one piece that launches a decor collection. A special piece handed down to you; something you remember being in a loved ones home. It makes you feel loved and dwell on fond memories. To me, that’s what beautiful home decor is all about. It tells your story.
When my mom passed, I inherited her coveted country church painting. She and my dad had picked it up on a trip, and it always held pride of place in her home. I’ve used it to decorate the mantel seasonally, but it finally got a permanent spot when I found the perfect arched windows to marry with it. I switch up the accessories around it seasonally. Luckily it’s got all my favorite nature’s colors in it and can transition through the seasons easily.
Thrift Variations on Your Theme, Vintage Style of Course
Thrifting and secondhand shopping are a great way to fill out themed decor. With your theme in mind, items jump out to you to join in the fun! I’ve always loved images of old country churches with pretty steeples. Mr. Fix-it and I both were raised in Christian churches and have fond memories and strong relationships formed there. Easter seems the perfect time to celebrate our heritage of faith that we’ve passed on to our big kiddos.
So when pretty needlepoint church frames get spotted…they end up in my cart! Actually, I often find them at church sales or estate sales. So many hours of work have gone into these; I love old needlepoint.

These colorful needlepoint frames were the perfect Springy combination with this vintage plastic church. With the light on inside, the pretty pastel stained glass windows are perfect for an Easter vintage vignette.

Include Words in Your Collections Display
Anything with words helps tell the story of your nostalgic display. At a recent estate sale, I came across this precious poem that someone wrote. I’m loving it grouped with my church themed collection.
Use Different Textures in Your Home Decor
Variation on a theme is a fun home decor idea. Purposely include different textures to make your decorating more interesting. I found this sweet homemade church pillow made with vintage grainsacks at a vintage market.

When thrifting, I’ve picked up a few cute church birdhouses, too. Some are handcrafted and some store bought. But they look great included with the theme.
Vintage Style Home Decor Pairings for Your Theme
Think about other accessories that go along with your theme. You don’t have to use the same thing over and over. You can sprinkle in other thrifted items that pair well.
Here are some accessories I include with my church theme:
- vintage verse plaques (find them HERE)
- old hymnals, especially junior versions (find HERE)
- pictures of Jesus (find Shepherd frames HERE)
- sheep figurines (find them HERE)
- stained glass (find it HERE)
Stick with a similar color theme to harmonize your decor. Easter is coming up, so I coordinated everything with Springtime colors.
Does this help you get inspired to make your home decor personal and memorable? Let your home tell your story. It doesn’t have to be with a million photographs of the trips you’ve been on (but that could be a launching point;) Take it a step farther and create thrifted vintage vignettes that are nostalgic. It’s easy when you’re thrifting to find items that fit into a theme.

Omgosh Lora! I absolutely love this. I decorate with religious pieces all the time and your church collection is amaZing! Your parent’s painting is beautiful and that pillow is fantastic! All the pieces are truly inspirational. Happy Easter friend! XO- MaryJo
So glad you enjoyed it, Maryjo! I’ve always loved the little old country churches with the pretty steeples; of course a collection happened:)
Beautiful..I LOVE your Mom’s church painting, and also all the needlepoints. I have a real fondness for churches too, and when we traveled in Europe I had to go to all the beautiful churches. I always say I must have lived several monastic lives because I am so happy in them.
Too funny, Jillian! When I was in Europe in college, we visited several and sang in them, too. Amazing acoustics!
I love your unique collection- especially the needlepoint pieces, they’re so charming!
I love your display. It is so meaningful and pretty. You have inspired me and I know I have a few things around to display together, thanks. I pinned it and bought a pillow cover.
Excited to hear you are joining the Gals! I love seeing your thrifted finds. Love your church painting from your mom as well. Everything looks so perfectly styled and cherished. That’s a talent! pinned
Love this pretty collection, Lora!! The needlepoints are amazing!
