Update Your Decor by Updating Your Greens
Just because you love vintage doesn’t mean your home needs to be old fashioned! In fact, a whole house full of vintage finds needs some fresh, trendy items to keep it from looking like an antique store (and I mean that in the most loving way, because I’m quite fond of them). Your choice of foliage can keep your home fresh and stylish or slide into stagnation and become dated. Let’s talk today about how to update your decor by updating your greens!
Did you think style was just for fashion? No-ho! Did you think us vintage lovers could just live blissfully with our old stuff and never have a care for what is going on in home design trends? Well…we probably could. But I love to add some fresh to my vintage, to stay just a little with current trends.
I’m not one to overhaul my wardrobe to follow the newest fashion styles, but I do try to add a couple pieces here and there to not look outdated. Whether it’s the chunky necklace trend, the width of the pant leg, or the hottest color trend, we are all swayed by what we’re seeing in the media everyday. Home fashion is no different, and it’s o.k. for a vintage/junk lover to keep up with the trends!
If your home has started to look ho-hum, why not add a little bit of the hottest trend and give it a breath of fresh air? You can add some new style to your old stuff by simply updating your greens! Pick up some new foliage at your nearest big box store.
And what’s hot right now? House plants and tropicals…and succulents are still going strong, too.
The bonus is that all these great “summer” plants are on sale right about now. Great time to jump on the trend! I picked up these stylish palms this week and already popped one into a late summer arrangement {“Repurposed Vintage Sewing Tote“}. The tropicals add a little “Boho” vibe to my vintage, which is kind of fun-especially for summer.
Have you noticed the tropical and houseplant craze in the magazines you’ve been looking at? Here are some pics from my most recent BHG and Country Living Mags:
Do a little research yourself: Pick up your favorite magazine, and while you’re leafing through the beautiful pages, notice what foliage the stylist used in the room. On-trend foliage is a great way to update your home decor.
If you buy a bush-type plant, feel free to use smaller portions. You can snip leaves off and pop them here and there with your vintage accessories. You can also make them look more life-like by bending the stems, like I did in “Get the Most from your Faux/Everlasting Flowers”.
My eye has been noticing this large, leafy plant in so many home styling pics, from Farmhouse-styled rooms by Joanna to trendier Boho styled decor. I knew I wanted to add this leaf to my house!
Of course, succulents continue to stay on-trend. They’ve been going strong for years and have gotten more reasonable to buy and more available. If you haven’t added succulents yet, get them before they go out!
Because just like fashion trends, what’s here today is sometimes out tomorrow. Thank goodness for tried and true vintage junk, right? Classic pieces of solidly built furniture and accessories that are made from real materials are the backbone of my home. But adding some updated foliage does add to it’s style!
Moderation is the key. A few updated greens-some tropicals, some houseplants, some succulents, will breathe new life into a room, without spending too much. I’m still holding on to my english ivy from the 80’s, because just like fashion, I’m sure it will come back around again;) But for now, I’m swapping up some of the cutesy flowers for a more “sophisticated” look.
Are you ready to update your decor by updating your greens? Hope this post got you thinking…and looking a little closer at the foliage in all those magazine layouts!

Such a great idea…I am really enjoying adding greenery to my decor now!
It adds so much, doesn’t it, Linda? Gives our vintage finds new life again:)
Oh funny, I was just thinking of finally getting rid of my ivy when I begin the house purge next month. It did occur to me that as soon as I get rid of it, it’ll be back. The current foliage trend is from the 70’s, maybe the 80’s will be next.
You’re totally right! Usually true that by the time I get ready to part with something, it comes back! Chintz will be back with the ivy…guaranteed.
