Three Ways to add Foliage to Your Styling
When it greens up outside the window, it’s time to green up inside, too! Yes, we’re all excited to get the planting going outside, but don’t forget the inside of your home. When the air conditioner needs to be turned on, you’ll be glad the inside of your home reflects the outside, even if it’s too hot to be out there! Today I’m going to share Three Ways to Add Foliage To Your Styling.
Our bedroom was ready for some summertime clothes, so I decided to show you this important concept on the mantel shelf above our bed. Our room is basically soft yellow and white, with some green accents, very “cottage”. I seasonally add accent colors to totally switch it up. {“Styling Tip: Using an Accent Color”} This summer I wanted to keep it fresh and organic, so I’m sticking to those colors and not adding any more to simplify.
As is often the case, my styling began with the accessories. Vintage, of course! I picked up 3 vintage Redwing Pottery Magnolia plates at the thrift store. I’ve already got a plate display on the wall, so I didn’t want to repeat that, but how to use them? I decided they would look nice hanging in front of our big, heavy, oak mirror above the bed. But how to accomplish that…?
Old fashioned plate and platter holders can be found at garage sales, thrift stores and estate sales. Pick them up when they’re 25 cents! Having a stash available is a good thing;)
I was first going to tap a little nail in the top frame of the mirror, but knew these plates were pretty heavy & I couldn’t get a swing in, since the ceiling is so close! Then I remembered I had some cheap wreath hangers laying around, you know-the kind you put over the door top to suspend your door wreaths. I realized the good part about them being cheap is that they bend easily! If you have a nicer one, this probably won’t work…go buy a cheap version!
You could straighten it more, but I have a big recess behind my big mirror, so the extra length just hides!
The wreath hangers look fine by themselves, except I had different colored ones for my 3 plates; time for a little foliage disguise! Which is what this post is about anyway!
Add Foliage/Organic Material to the Vertical Space in Back of Your Display
It could be on the wall behind your vignette, or even leaning. A foliage frame, a random flower tacked on, maybe even a piece of bark, or something else organic…think nature. This time of year I want it to be green, but any type of organic material can work, depending on the season.
I used a roll of moss to disguise the wreath hangers. I attached them with a little stitch of green thread and a twist of green wire. I ended up having 2 different versions, one with a mesh back and the other more open. Perfect disguise for my mismatched hangers.
(You can see the “guts” in the reflection, but really don’t notice it when viewing from the rest of the room.)
Next, I added my collection of yellow pitchers. There’s finally something to clip in my yard, and ferns and apple blossoms are usually the first to enjoy!
Add Foliage/Organic Material to the Main Elements of Your Display
Fresh clippings from the yard are wonderful, but you could also use everlasting florals or even something rougher, like sticks.
Lastly,
Add Foliage/Organic Material to the Base of Your Arrangement
Stones, pinecones or other loose material can be used, or a long garland can be woven through your vignette. I picked up a ferny garland for cheap at a church sale and continued with the ferny theme.
I love how the fresh green is set off against the shabby white mantel shelf!
The whole scene is a little wild with nature. But it’s kind of like the profusion of spring happening outside the window!
I added one more touch of nature for a little life:

I like the cheerfulness of the white, spring green, and yellows together. I made 2 yellow and white pillow cases to sell this week and realized my house doesn’t have any yellow. Wish I had an excuse for more pillowcases! It is a spirit-raising color especially with the spring green. You made it look easy!
You’re right, Kathy-spring green and yellow are a happy combo! I love adding a little yellow to every room in the spring and summer; it’s like adding rays of sunshine to a room!
