Materials Needed for this DIY:
Vintage feedsack (or reproduction)
To Begin your Stapled Mini Stool, Choose your Finish & Fabric
- My little stool got treated to a couple coats of Miss Mustard Seed’s Farmhouse White Milk paint (you can get it HERE). This thin paint bubbles after a couple coats and can be easily hand sanded for a vintage look. I sealed & finished it by wiping it with a coat of hemp oil (get it HERE).
- Cut your desired fabric large enough to wrap around the edges of the stool seat by 1-2″ Unfortunately the vintage feed sack label I wanted to use was too small. Time to get creative!
- If you have the same problem, simply cut strips of fabric to make it larger. With right sides together, use a small seam allowance & sew two opposing sides onto the front. Then open the seams and do the same with the other opposing sides.
- When done, press and top stitch.
If Desired, Add Embroidered Details to Fabric
- (Top stitched seam up close.)
- If you’d like to give the feedsack a little extra detail, put fusible interfacing on the back of the fabric.
- Add embroidered detailing to vintage feedsack letters. I added a simple, folk-ish running stitch with light blue and gray embroidery floss (I split the strand).
- Attach the fabric to the stool seat with an electric staple gun. Begin stapling each corner down.
To Finish, Attach the Stool Seat to Frame and Add Trim
- Continue stapling the fabric on each side, making sure to smooth out any large bumps at corners. (Mine got thicker because I had to add that extra fabric).
- Before attaching the stool seat to the legs, glue a scrap piece of fabric to the bottom. Your finished piece will look much nicer on the bottom as well as the top! Use original screws to attach the top to the legs.
- I ended up with a fairly large gap because I had pieced the top. No worries with DIY projects, though…just roll with it! A little bit of trim will cover all that.
- Hot glue simple rope between fabric and stool frame to finish off (overlap ends in the middle of one of the sides).
Decorate with your Easy Stapled Feedsack DIY Mini Stool
Little stools like these can be such a fun accent piece to decorate with. This one will never be left on the floor for feet; it gets to enjoy a prime tabletop spot, it’s so cute! It will be right at home with other vintage labeled accessories!
That bit of rope accent was a wonderful happenstance. It adds so much to the overall rustic, vintage vibe of the piece. You wouldn’t have to embroider the letters like I did. I was simply going with the look I created on our loveseat and chair in our kitchen sitting area {“Adding Vintage Feedsacks to New Furniture Seats”}.
