DIY Upcycled Sheet Music Art
What can you do with old sheet music? Vintage sheet music crafts are an inexpensive way to add charming nostalgic art to your home decor. This easy tutorial shows how to craft music sheet art with thrifted finds to make charming upcycled framed art.

At a recent estate sale, I spotted a whole box of old sheet music that had “free” written on it. I scooped it up, anxious to look through and enjoy all the vintage cover graphics. The nostalgic beauty of old music inspired this DIY Upcycled Sheet Music Art; I hope it inspires you to create some for yourself!

Tattered and Torn, But Still Beautiful
Old sheet music often shows its wear and tear. Many would simply throw it in the trash. But I see it’s beauty and potential. The old fonts, graphics, and illustration is true art; it just needs to be revived and enjoyed in a new way.
As I looked through the old music, I was hoping to find some Patriotic songs that I could use in my decorating and to upcycle into framed art for my booth space. Happily I came across a couple songs and used them right away on my coffee table {“Classic Patriotic Mantel Decor with Vintage Thrifted Finds”}.

Here’s how to turn old, tattered sheet music into charming, nostalgic art that’s unique and inexpensive!

Materials Needed
- thrifted frame, with or without glass
- vintage sheet music, both the artistic front and music pages
- modge podge and brush
Upcycled Sheet Music Art How To
Whenever I’m thrifting, I make sure to check the frame section. Solid wood frames with glass intact are a great asset to have available for crafting and decorating. And so much cheaper than buying new (and better made).
You can choose a frame that is similar in size to the music cover. Or, you can go a size bigger so you can “frame” the cover in the vintage music sheets, like I did. I just picked up this classic wooden frame at a church sale for basically nothing.

Take the glass and cardboard out of the frame and wipe clean. Sometimes old frames are showing their wear. THESE furniture markers are a handy touch up item to have on hand for any everyday project; definitely recommend!

To “frame” the music sheet cover, tear strips of the music. If you like certain graphics, tear those into strips also. I always love the art deco graphic art that is sometimes on the back of the music.

Glue the music strips all around the front edges of the cardboard with modge podge. Leave enough hanging over to wrap around the backside. I usually face all the music paper facing inwards, if that makes sense, except for the bottom.

Wraparound and glue the hang over music all around. To finish off the back nicely, glue a full sheet of music to cover the cardboard. Upcycled projects should look pretty on the back, too!

Put everything back in the frame once its dry. So easy!

Finished Upcycled Sheet Music Framed Art
This lake themed music art is heading to my booth, for summer cabin decorating (we live in the Lake Minnetonka area…so someone will hopefully love it!)

I also turned the coffee table Patriotic music into framed art. I tore the song titles and placed them differently to fit into the thrifted oval frames. Perfect for the Patriotic theme in my booth.

For this piece I used the red and blue music on the back of a song around the frame, for even more Patriotic punch.

So…if you hit an estate sale or are thrifting and come across a box of free or almost free old music, you won’t have to wonder, “What Can You Do With Old Sheet Music?” There are all kinds of fun sheet music crafts to enjoy!

This is a great idea! I love what you’ve done. And when I think about some lovely old but tattered music I’ve thrown away bc I didn’t know what to do with it! Since then, I’ve also seen where someone decoupaged sheets to a coffee table…maybe to hide some blemishes. They sort of trailed it from the center to the end.
Oh I love this so much Lora! Sheet music is always a great muse and scoring an entire box for free is amazing. I use vintage sheet music in projects all the time and I would love to stumble across a free box. 🙂 Lovely project! XO- MaryJo
Such a great idea!! Old sheet music is so pretty…they just don’t make them like they used to! Someone is going to scoop those frames up quickly!
Love this idea, and I love collecting sheet music too, such an easy DIY, thanks, Lora!
