Want to add a festive touch to your party? This simple DIY fabric bunting garland can be made to coordinate with your party decor. Here’s the easy how to
There’s nothing that adds more instant charm and festivity to a party or special event than fabric bunting garland. And it’s so easy to make yourself! You can custom coordinate the colors and patterns to your style to give your special occasion a unique touch. This DIY Fabric Bunting Garland How To will help to make your party memorable!
When I shared the “Nautical Themed Buffet For Dad”, several readers asked how I made the fabric bunting garland. I made long stretches of the cute striped pennants for my oldest son’s grad party years ago. I store the fabric pieces in a ziplock bag and string them on rope when needed.
To put together this how to, I decided to make a few new pieces to mix and match with the striped nautical pieces. By adding red themed fabrics I can give the nautical look a Patriotic vibe for the summer holidays. Here’s the easy how to.

Materials Needed:
Variety of cotton fabrics, coordinated to your style
ruler and pencil
cardboard
buttons and trims, optional
Make a Template
To get started, make your pattern template out of cardboard. Your pennant should measure 8″ by 9″. Once you have the square, find the middle. Measure 2 1/2″ up from the bottom. Mark this spot and draw lines from each of the bottom corners. Cut out your template.
Cut Fabric Pieces
Fold your fabric so the top of your pennant will be on the fold. If you’re using a striped fabric, you’ll want to make sure the lines match up on both sides. Lay your cardboard template down and trace with a light pencil or chalk. Cut out the shape on the bottom 3 sides with pinking shears.
Sew Fabric Bunting Garland Pieces
Pin in several places so your fabric doesn’t move around when you’re sewing.
Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew across the top, 1+ ” from the folded top. This will create a pocket for you to string the rope through.
Next, sew down the left side below the pocket you created. Use the guide of your presser foot for the seam allowance.
Sewing tip: When you get to the bottom, leave the needle down in the fabric, so the fabric won’t move around as you turn to do the next stretch.
Sew the bottom three sides, stopping at the top pocket.
Make as many of these fabric pennants as you will need.
Optional: Decorate the Fabric Pennants
To customize your pennants you can add different trims. You can leave some pennants plain and add trims to others. A great way to use fun vintage finds from your stash!
To add a patriotic vibe, I glued ribbon and rick rack on a few. Wrap the trim around to the back about an inch and glue for a more finished look.
The little coin pockets on old jeans can be add a fun decorative touch. Cut it out and glue on, adding buttons to the front. With red striped fabric, it looks similar to a flag.
The buttons could also be tied with red or blue embroidery floss knots. I was short on time, so skipped the cute idea;)
String Pennants on Rope for DIY Fabric Bunting
Wrap tape around the end of jute roping. Push through fabric pocket at top, arranging your pennants as you like. Make it as long or as short as you need.
Decorate Your Party with Your Fabric Bunting Garland
Your custom coordinated fabric bunting garland will add festivity to any party or special occasion. Hang it on the porch, across a piece of furniture, or create a divider between two objects.
You can add or take away different fabric pennants to get a fresh look. I used a vintage fabric calendar for one and also added red with the strawberry and striped fabrics to get a Patriotic look. Store in a ziplock bag when not in use.
Hope you see how fun it can be to make fabric bunting for your party or special occasion! If you don’t sew, you could craft the look using fabric glue, too. But push your creativity; simple sewing on a basic machine is a great skill that you will use so often!

Wonderful! Thanks, Cindy:)
Wowza, did you make every single one of those garlands that are on your porch?! How long did that take you? They look fantastic up there.
These are so cute and a great way to use up scraps. Thanks Lora.
At first glance I thought one of the fabrics was a men’s shirt recycled. Then I thought what a great idea.
I might have to try that.
Thanks for a very cute idea! We use a pop-up tent on our deck and this bunting will look great between the posts. Nice summer project.
