3 Steps to Displaying Your Collections Beautifully
There are so many vintage lovers out there that have amazing collections! We all enjoy treasure hunting to find that elusive piece to add to our already bulging trove! Displaying our finds around our homes is a fun way to not only enjoy the beauty, but remember the adventures we were on when we found them. Today I’m going to share the 3 steps you can follow to display your collections beautifully!
I’m joining my friends from our facebook group, Creative Vintage Darlings for a blog hop today, celebrating our love for everything vintage! We’d love for you to join our group, too! You can hop on over to our page, {Here}. We’ve been pinning all our vintage love {Here}, and Instagram our vintage love {Here}.
I’ll share the links to the other Creative Vintage Darlings’ inspiration at the end of my post. Can’t wait to see what everyone is sharing today!
Let’s get going with creating a beautiful display of your collection! I’ll also have a printable version for you to grab later.
Once you’ve assembled your collection, it’s time to begin the 3 steps:
To Start, Group Your Collection
It’s up to you how you want to group your treasures! You can group them by color, shape, size, function, kind, or some other attribute. I’m going to display some of my pottery collection today, so grouping by color is what I’m doing for this example. I call this color blocking, and it’s an easy and visually appealing way to style. I used this same concept for flowers in “Color Block your Garden Bouquets for Visual Impact”, and also for my fall cupboard display, “Fall Kitchen Tour”.
Place each grouping on a separate shelf or area, so they’re near each other, yet separate. Each group can be styled individually, but keep in mind the overall vignette for balance.
Next…
To Add Height, Add Different Levels
Stack some pieces on top of others, tipping some upside down to develop height and interest:
You can also add “neutral” items that won’t diminish the importance of your collection, and also to fill the space out a little more. To give my pottery a more earthy vibe for spring, I added birch sections. If you’d like more ideas for neutral level additions, you can grab my “3 Steps to Beautifully Styled Collections”, below.
I think the logs provide a little Anthro vibe, which I love;)
Last, but definitely not least, you can…
For Even More Decor Effect, Add a Backdrop
I call the area behind the amazing collection the, “3rd Dimension”. So many collectors don’t take advantage of this last canvas to really pop their display!
Yes, it would be easier to place something as a backdrop before everything else, but then you don’t really know how everything’s going to land and how much visual space the pieces are going to take up.
The truth is, I forget about this area till the end too; when it’s blank-ness is staring at me!
By adding an element to this 3rd dimension, you can really set off and frame your whole, beautiful collection! You can choose something subtle to simply give the scene a foundation, or you can add a little pizazz and interest to invigorate the scene.
I’ve shown a couple ideas here on my shelves; everything from a frame to textural interest. I came up with some other ideas in my “3 Steps to Beautifully Styled Shelves”, a printable sheet you can grab for free if you subscribe to my newsletter. When you subscribe, you’ll receive a password to access all my free, printable resources and artwork. My library of styling tips, vintage refresh tricks and pretty printables is getting added to each week!
I hope this post has inspired you to gather your collections and get styling! Finding and buying vintage pieces is oh-so-fun, but decorating with them and enjoying them everyday in your home, not only brings back the memories of where they’re from, it also looks beautiful! Round up your collections and use these 3 steps to display your collections in a unique and beautiful way!

Stacking is something I’ve only just nailed down in the last year or so and I think it really adds a lot of interest – fantastic post and collection! I love it all!
Thanks, Heather! Yes…stacking is where it’s at! Upside, downside, whatever works makes your collections more interesting!
I like how you arranged by color instead of shape, etc. thank you for revealing the gap and how to remedy. Identifying that on my own shelves is hard for me
Glad you found some tips helpful, Gail! Have fun with your styling!
I love all the vintage items, and how you have them displayed is PERFECTION! I don’t know what it is about the vintage colors that make them so hard to pass up, but I never seem to be able to pass them up!
Love all your goodies and now I want to go rearrange mine!

Karin
